I'd like to be cryogenically frozen for a couple of years, so that I can play it right now.

EDIT: Has anybody on here read all the details about this game? Read about the ships and everything? This has got to be the most ambitious project I have ever seen... ever.. ever... ever. I can't imagine this being done within 3 years... maybe 4-6. Just look at this... Coming up on 'flight chairs', track ir, multi function displays.... I'm not sure what it all means but I feel like it's actually going to need NASA's budget.

It means they're going to support more advanced hardware if they hit 4.5 Sounds flashy, but said hardware already has drivers.

The condensed translation: We're going to make the game recognize drivers for advanced hardware if you pay us another 500k to do it.

It's a serious effort, but not as huge as it may sound. "Flight chairs" are just chairs with joysticks on the arms and rudder pedals. "Track IR" is essentially a Wii-mote you wear on your head, such that the motion of your head is tracked (you turn your head left, the virtual you in the cockpit looks left). "Multi-function-displays" are the small sub-displays on the more hardcore joysticks and hardware.

This hardware is essentially used by an extreme hardcore segment of simulator fans (not exactly a huge market) so screw icing, it's the little plastic figurine on top of the icing on the cake.

I think it's entirely possible, since the team did the smart thing and licensed a game engine (I think licensing CryEngine3 costs about $1.2M). That leaves all their focus towards developing a game and not the tech to render it.

I'll be keeping an eye on this. I think it could end up being a truly amazing game.

This. Also there aren't any publishing bureaucracies to get in the way. Brian Fargo stated in a recent interview that back when he worked for publishers, he spent 25-30% of his time on PR bullshit and convincing the masters that be that he knew what he was doing.

With crowd sourcing, that doesn't happen. It's apparently a much more efficient process, more can be done with less.

Well it's at 4.4 mil with a little bit over a day left, looks like the 4.5 mil stretch goal is going to be hit.

Yep. 5.5 would be especially nice (playable carriers for clans!) but I doubt it'll get that far. Still, things are looking awesome.

You know at the rate the pledges are coming in I do have to wonder if perhaps the 5.5 mil goal will be hit. Not saying that it will be necessarily but sometimes these campaigns pick up even more steam on the final day.

This is why the CryEngine is so nice and all that work CryTek did on it over the past 10 years is such a big deal. CryEngine, and the sandbox development tool make creating games very very efficient. Licensing the engine, even though it's over $1M, surely saved them that much money in dev time and labor.

Alright people, we are at the final 24 hours of this campaign! We currently stand at 4.75 MILLION dollars pledged, with 5+ million in our sights. If anyone wants to pledge, but hasn't done so yet, you can use a friend's referral link (here's mine) to get an extra 250 credits and a chance to win some swag. If you pledged on the kickstarter page, you can still enter to win. you'll be sent a survey at the end of the funding period asking if anyone recruited you (my rsi name is the same.. Cyco-Dude ). If you've already pledged on the rsi website and you want 250 more credits and a change to win some swag, click on the "your account" link at the top and enter my (or a friends, whatever) e-mail or user name into the referrer box. It's the last day to win some cool stuff; get it while you can.

Additionally, there are a number of limited-time add-ons as well as some other goodies, so check them out! I'm linking to the kickstarter post to take some load off of the RSI website. It's getting hammered right now, so please be patient!

You'll still be able to pledge after this initial crowd-funding is over. If you pledge now though, you'll be able to upgrade your pledge at a later date in case you really want something but don't have all the cash now. There will be a live-stream marathon going until the campaign is over; I'll update with the relevant links when everything goes live!

ok, they're getting the streams set up now on ustream.
chris' stream
ben's stream
office stream
site that has all streams in one window
twitch tv re-stream with multiple stream and chat windows!http://www.twitch.tv/i_am_a_citizen

I'm confused about the box version that was recently announced. On the main Kickstarter page it mentions this:

We're pleased to announce that Star Citizen will indeed, come in a box! $125 pledges will get a green box while $250-and-above pledges will get a grey box personally signed by Chris Roberts!

I checked the $125 pleged on the right side and it doesn't mention the box or if there's physical media.

The website is hit or miss. I think there are too many people refreshing it to see what the total is.

So I'm not really sure what tier I want. The different spaceships and rewards kinda don't mean anything to me beyond names and numbers. I'm all for this game, but what am I actually getting? I guess I would probably just go for the lowest tier that gives the 300i?

If you have a specific role you want to play (or just want to give more money) then the $125 packages offer high-end ships specifically for dogfighting/combat (Wingnut) and trade/exploration (Freelancer). Otherwise the $37 package is fine for getting your foot in the door.

what would you be interested in doing? the website is borked, but i know the ship stats well enough to guide you if you (or anyone else) needs it. are you more the kind of dogfighter / mercenary / bounty hunter? if so, the 300i or hornet would be good. do you enjoy the exploring / trading aspect more? if that's the case, the lancer or constellation would be ideal.

also, we've passed the 5 Million dollar milestone about 15 minutes ago. pretty kick-ass!

Hmmmmmm... how bout this Drake Cutlass? I get the sense that would be an in between tho and make for mediocre trading and mediocre combat, so I better have some friends to assist in fighters in case of escorted freelancers.

that seems like a pretty good assumption. you can check out the different ship specs here. seems to be right in-between the hornet and the lancer.

Yeah, I funded more for the cause in general. This is the first legit AAA-style space combat sim we've had in over a decade.

As a space combat sim, I think you may have a good chance to get what you are after. It's the 'open world sandbox' element that I think is going to seriously underperform expectations.
