Atkins does not necessarily mean high fat although many people turn it into that because they can.

What is best is to stay away from simple carbs as much as you can, i.e. sugar, breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc.

Complex carbs (non starchy vegetables) and proteins(meat, oils, eggs, cheese) are what is best for you.

When people load up on fatty meats or go heavy on oils (especially trans fatty oils), eggs, and cheeses (especially fatty cheeses) they are not doing themselves any favors. Although, high omega3 oils like fish oil are essential for a healthy diet.

Starchy vegetables and grains should be included in your diet in limited quantities.

What is the most important part is to look at a diet as a change of lifestyle that you will feel comfortable with for the rest of your life. Too many people go overboard and then lapse back because they set their goals far too strident.

If you follow atkins correctly your cholestrol will go down. Most poeple dont even have a CLUE as to what atkins really is and they think you stay on the induction foods indefinately. Atkins works and it is healthy if followed correctly.

/end rant

Don't forget to mention that they think the induction foods are all supposed to be deep fried and covered in cheese.

OP let me clarify something for you:

Fix your problem or face the high likelihood of premature death at the age of 40. That means EXERCISE combined with a diet lower in fat and cholesterol. It also means PORTION CONTROL.

You omitted height.

Anyways, triglycerides and cholesterol are through the roof. You need to completely stop eating fried/fatty foods.

Your HDL is way too low, and your LDL is high. If you normally eat tons of meat I suggest substituting some salmon and fish in your diet.

Also, exercise. Your BP can't be good with your fatty blood.

Glad that you pulled this thing up from 7 months ago just to tell us.

I have no clue how that happened; I thought it was a current thread.. must have been through a search or something lol.

Uh, no, not necessarily.

Most would be smart enough to give dietary adjustments time to improve the condition before prescribing medication(s).

That is, the ones that aren't on Pfizer and Merck's payrolls.

i would have to agree, being that Roberts Atkins himself had heart disease, hypertension, and was obese.

I would have to disagree. I basically cut out carbs (sugar, soft drinks, rice, pasta) from my diet thus reducing my intake calorie count. Since December, I have lost 41 pounds. I'm 5'9 and 178lbs now.
what are you disagreeing with? so you lost weight. have you checked your cholesterol level since eating all that cheese, eggs, meat and bacon? that is what the Atkin's diet promotes eating.

not to diminish the accomplishment of your weight loss, but the Atkin's died does promote heart disease.

I'm saying that the diet does work. I did not eat bacon, cheese, eggs. My diet solely consisted of a lot of fruits, veggies (roasted, sauteed, grilled), low fat milk/soymilk, organic chicken breasts etc. I also ate a lot of nuts, grains etc to keep my energy up.
Just because Atkins himself was obese doesn't mean that the diet doesn't work. I disagree with the fact that you agreed that its for dumbasses. The diet does work if you are careful and 'know' what you're eating.

The diet worked because you cut kcals, not because you dropped carbs.

I joined a gym yesterday.

I know, but he claims it will bring down my weight, and fix the blood related problems.
Mom doesnt believe in atkins. She sabotaged my dietecians menu when i moved back home in feb.

180 isn't that bad unless you are short

Move out of the house. Honestly, some families have a toxic relationship with feeding, where they feel the need, the need to feed :)

Uhh..to bet back in shape you would've had to be in shape at a point in time. I know I'll probably regret this since I'm the Mod there but you might want to check out the Health and Fitness forum.

This topic fails on so many levels.

First H&F is <--- that way. Can someone move this train wreck before the death toll rises?

And I recommend returning to India, and drink a lot of unboiled water. Pick up a nice variety of intestinal parasites, and you are all set! Before you know it, you are a walking skeleton with a great cholesterol count!

And I heard you can get WAY cheap sex operations over there, like snipping the nads, too! Of course, you have to bring your own dull rusty pocket knife and bottle of booze.

HOLY Crap. I was told to go on the atkins, guess what.. mom's sabotaging it for me.

UGH!

How do i get her to stop giving me low fat, and what she thinks is healthy food. I must say i put on 20 lbs since i got back from india, and all of it is due to mom's cooking .. i have put on weight every time i came back to LA from school.

Any ideas short of moving out and cooking my own food.

How tall are you?
