i would have to agree, being that Roberts Atkins himself had heart disease, hypertension, and was obese.

I would have to disagree. I basically cut out carbs (sugar, soft drinks, rice, pasta) from my diet thus reducing my intake calorie count. Since December, I have lost 41 pounds. I'm 5'9 and 178lbs now.

what are you disagreeing with? so you lost weight. have you checked your cholesterol level since eating all that cheese, eggs, meat and bacon? that is what the Atkin's diet promotes eating.

not to diminish the accomplishment of your weight loss, but the Atkin's died does promote heart disease.

I'm saying that the diet does work. I did not eat bacon, cheese, eggs. My diet solely consisted of a lot of fruits, veggies (roasted, sauteed, grilled), low fat milk/soymilk, organic chicken breasts etc. I also ate a lot of nuts, grains etc to keep my energy up.
Just because Atkins himself was obese doesn't mean that the diet doesn't work. I disagree with the fact that you agreed that its for dumbasses. The diet does work if you are careful and 'know' what you're eating.

I had an amazing diet that worked for me.

It's called "Stop eating so much and go exercise".

I was skeptical of this diet, thinking it just another fad. At first there was no change. I stopped drinking pepsi/dew/etc and starting drinking tea with no suger (although sometimes I do put equal in it). I stopped getting cookies/chilli cheese frys/fast food for lunch and instead eating salads, sandwiches, etc. I starting having smaller portions at dinner (no more 16 oz steaks and half pound mash potatos with veggie side, cheese stick appatizers, and deserts when I go out).

Then on top of that I started walking every day for 30 minutes, then jogging, then eventually running. It was tough and man did I hurt. Then I started strength training, again man did this hurt a lot. All this time I didn't lose a single pound. I was sure this fad diet wouldn't work, I mean it had been like a month. I got into competitive sports (judo/bjj/mixed martial arts) and finally i started losing weight and then I realized why.

Cutting down my diet helped me stop gaining weight. But I was not doing enough exercise to counteract me food intake. This is because I did not push myself. I worked only until I was tired or bored. Competitive sports forced me to work beyond what I thought was reasonable. Once I started pushing the limits of what I thought was possible (hundreds of crunches instead of dozens, 50 pull ups (even if that ment it took 15 minutes or more), medicine ball workouts, running sprints until I could no longer stand, man the weight starting to shed off.

Next thing I know my clothes no longer fit I went from a 36 inch waist in jeans to a 32 inch. I could wear tshirts again without my belly showing, etc. Then this muscle tone starting showing up, and I started being hungry all the time. It turns out, if you try this fad diet, eventually you can increase your food intake because you burn so much energy working out. Now I can eat almost whatever I want (usually once a week we go out to a steak joint and I really chow down) and maintain a consistent weight. I balance around 155-160, which is almost my highschool weight.

On top of all this, this fad diet actually cured other problems I was having. My 'bad' back suddenly no longer hurts me, my wrist problems are gone, I stopped having migraines, my allergies cleared up, as my flexibility improved I found my general aches and pains went away and I got hurt less while working out, I can carry heavy things now and open jars in the kitchen for my wife, my wife suddenly wants a lot more sex and I am suddenly wanting to provide it a lot more often and for a lot longer, and people seem to listen and respect me now.

It's really an amazing fad diet, someone should write a book on it.

Instead of some diet-of-the-month, how about eating healthy foods and exercising? Ftw.

You're all assuming that his cholesterol levels (particularly the high tri's) are diet-related. That isn't necessarily the case. Family history and genetics do play a role.

Atkins isn't going to kill him or take his kidneys out. Sheesh. It may actually be quite beneficial, if followed correctly.

High fat does not necessarily equal high cholesterol, and so many factors affect the body's absorption of cholesterol beyond the content in the food itself.

Looks like you followed the "Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase of Atkins" which isn't what most people think of when they see "Atkin's Diet".

Stop eating crap and go exercise. Be especially carefully of what your diet is due to your already higher potential of getting diabetes.

If it was not diet, his doctor would treat with medicine and not tell him to diet.

Seriously dude ... your doctor's advice was fucked up. Atkins will never work long term, and will only increase your cholesterol. You need to not eat cholesterol based products, up the exercise, cut sugar etc.

I had high cholesterol too, and recently *gasp* became vegan --> no dairy, no eggs, no meat products. This from a self-avowed meat-eating, egg-loving milk guzzler. Within two months, all of my cholesterol and trigylcerides levels have dropped insanely. Of course, I have also stopped eating white flour, added sugar, and almost all processed foods.

Just remember that you are responsible for what goes in your mouth, not your Mom. If she doesn't agree with what you want/need to do, then move out or just buy your own food.
