More features, and not everyone is still a kid in school for whom price doesn't factor into the decision because their DAP will most likely be paid for by mom & dad

You needed to enable DB mode is the settings for the iRiver. Then it'll navigate via ID3 tags. I have the iRiver, I'm happy with it and, at the time, its battery life (~16 hours) was much better than the iPods and the biggest selling point for me.
Overall, as far as ease-of-use and asthetics go.....iPod is the winner, especially with navigation. Technically the iRiver may sound better, but I doubt that I'd be able to hear the difference. But then, the iRiver plays more formats than the iPod and has voice recording and optical line-in (which, I admit, I never use).
I'm not saying I'm unhappy with my iRiver purchase....but with the newest iPods having better battery life than before, I would re-evaluate my decision if I were to do it again.

Deftron has spoken more of real-life comparisons and identified his equipment, so under certain circumstances, I would be inclined to weigh his evaluation more so than opinion of knowledge

It's been pretty well established that you probably have never seen a 4G ipod and certainly have never listened to one, Gurck. I'm unclear which G you did listen to, but I am absolutely certain it was not the 4G. I have listened to two iriver products. I could easily do what you are doing and compare the slimx to an ipod in sound quality. Guess who wins? Hint... not the one that can't play normal cds properly.

For a site with no more than a "random quote" it certainly gets a lot of traffic. Google 'ipod sound quality' and see how many times it comes up - also browse the ipod lounge and see how popular it is. What I find most telling is that the site's author is just one more dumbass too dazzled by Apple's ads and the fashion statement having an iPod makes (to low-IQ trend-following nitwits) to see the full importance and sheer number of its downpoints (though unlike most he will at least admit them) - he actually likes the thing. And I believe my friend's is a 3g, I'll ask him but he's not of the technical bent and likely knows no more than that it's an iPod.
But KoolAidKid is probably right, I've said what can be said. If people buy iPods despite having read the factual information I've provided about them, they'll get the crappy player they deserve. You will trust random people on a forum as a credible source of information, but not someone who is a professional reviewer for a respected audiophile magazine, who provides waveform analysis instead of a random number that could have just been made up. Seriously let's all sit back and laugh at that one.
