was there a fourth mage? I remember using the main character (mage), Morrigan, the old chick from the mage tower, and Alistar throughout the game.

I need to ask you an honest question. Did you really consider the 1st game that tactical? I mean the combat was slower, but my mages would pretty much woop butt in every encounter, my tank would taunt, and my rogues would stab. Other than that I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I am still enjoying the game so far, but it's no DAO.

One another note. Is it me or does my mage only throw out spells when he decides too. For instance I press the button for the Frost spell(not cone of cold), but my mage decides to finish his laser staff dance for a few more seconds before launching the spell. Realistic? Probably. Annoying? Oh yeah.

I played it that way, yes. Mages were really no fun, so I used them just for backup. I had a blast soloing most of the game with my rogue and just using my party for support roles. You cannot really do this in DA2.

I agree 100% that DA:O didn't need to be tactical with the right party (or on low difficulty) but it was a lot more fun to play tactically. Played kind of like NWN when soloing.

Not to wax nostaligic, but good RPGs have gotten REALLY easy these days. I know the BG/ID compares are getting tiresome, but the difficulty of Bioware's games has gotten much easier over time. I cannot even imagine trying to solo BG1/2 on a tough difficulty...
BG/ID > NWN > DA (difficulty)

I did enjoy DA:O a lot more than NWN though personally...DA2 is on-par to me in 'fun factor' but I would give the nod to NWN as a superior platform,

NWN2 Mask of the Betrayer is so much better than DA2 though. Are you just referring to the first NWN? MOTB was such a good game.

I kind of lumped the whole NWN collection together. You are right, MOTB was definitely the highlight of the series. The series matured pretty well. As much as I love the FR world, I do like the DA world as well because it is new and fresh.

After beating the game a few times I ran some mods and was able to run 4 mages. Otherwise known as the ladies of Spellforce 5. My Char, Morrigan, Wynne, and Lelianna modded to a mage.

NWN 1 was one of the best games I have ever played period. It was all about the toolset, which was the original focus of the game, they just threw a campaign together at the last minute just for the sake of having one (I don't even remember the plot to it). But with the toolset you literally had thousands of different campaigns to play, and there were many, many good ones to pick and play. Then there's the whole persistent world aspect that I personally never got into myself but heard many good things about. Man that game was amazing.

Now I'm oh so tempted to reinstall everything and go browsing through nwvault's hall of fame modules...

I assume when people say they didn't like NWN1, they are referring to the OC. Other than the OC, the only issue I had that was really prevalent no matter what you were playing is that NWN had a pretty ugly 3D engine. It was a rough transition from 2D to 3D, the NWN2 engine was a lot better at displaying content.

The graphics were definitely a bit off, but the game play more than made up for it.

How was the mod scene with NWN 2? Were there a bunch of (good) custom campaigns to pick and choose from?

That's a good description of NWN1. The potential of the game was mind-blowing, but the OC was pretty weak. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time back then to really take advantage of it. If that game had launched 3-4 years earlier, I would have had an absolute blast.

The engine was kind of clunky, and the radial menus were garbage. Those were my 'main' complaints, nothing huge though.

Dude im on my third run right now.

If anything, i can feel a lot of your pains, but i really loved dragon age for its movie like setting.

Basically its a virtual movie which u direct and control the events of.

That is how im treating the second one.

And its funny when you pair up different companions and listen to how they interact with each other.

Example... Arvaline vs. Isabella is total comedy.
Arvaline vs Varric is also comedy.
Isabella vs Anders
Varric with anyone is absolute comedy...
Merril doesnt know how to shut up.

Bethany.. meh... i love her skills... but her talking dialog is kinda lacking.

But yeah.. i find watching how people interact at cut scenes, doing there little touch, and how they interact with each other, as well as the story flow, and how the story is being told by varric.

Its not a bad game.. they could of done a lot worse.

I'm enjoying the game. It's not nearly as good as DA:O, but it is close enough that it hits the spot. There are a ton of little things I could nitpick at, but I'm taking the game for it is and having a good time with it. I guess my expectations were set pretty low due to all the talks of consolization. Yes when compared to DA:O it falls short. I believe it would be getting a decent amount of praise if it was a standalone product.

Anders + Fenris is very serious :(

i intend to use fenris on the third run.

I really love Avaline vs Isabela.. lol..

The Arishok: She stole the book, she needs to die.
Avaline: Oh no you dont.. i get to beat her up first..

Other than the main mods, I haven't played any custom ones. I feel kind of bad about that. For what it's worth, I spent a lot more time tooling around in multiplayer on NWN1. NWN2 I just chugged through all the SP content and then moved on.

I have been playing DA2 Signature version at a slow pace ie not rushing through anything, done about 17 hours so far and just about ready to go to Deep Roads.

So far its really nothing like DAO,storyline is so far non-existent,having shop vendors is not much fun being you can really only buy belts and rings/amulets unless you want to keep changing your main characters armour,I miss the good old camp fire and going to their houses for chats is annoying.

Difficulty level is a lot easier then DAO,normal is way too easy, copy and paste of so many similar areas is not something I expected from Bioware.
So far I feel like an errand boy lol...anyway hoping it will get better, positives are hmmm very stable (no crashes) and smooth FPS on my humble 4870 card, graphics are ok however nothing special.
I can't believe PC Gamer had "THE CHEEK" to give this such an high rating,so far its 7/10 at the very best IMHO,below Bioware standards for sure.

Wow and I thought that I was playing slow! I started the deep roads quest at 13 hours in.

But I agree with a lot of your points.

There isn't much of a story. The few times the game switches back to Varric talking to that lady (a Seeker, IIRC), it hits me "oh yeah, the way I'm playing is Varric's story about my character."

I don't really care much about my companions. They are boring and bitchy. DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE THE DEEP ROADS QUEST
I was glad to let Carver die in the deep roads.
Carver is a little bitch. Fenris is always talking shit about mages as if my character wasn't a mage. Anders & Aveline are uninteresting. Merrill is alright because I like the voice acting.

Sadly it hasn't gotten much better after the deep roads as far as being an errand boy goes. You're pretty much just a wealthy errand boy after that.

And I hate how almost no one can use any piece of equipment I pick up! Why is all the armor restricted to Hawke!?! It's even worse when it's warrior armor restricted to Hawke since mine is a mage! Or I'll need to have like 28 magic to use something I get, and by that time I've found something with lower restrictions that is better anyway. It's so messed up.

And I don't like how all the caves are the same. Wow, this one has regular wood doors and that one has slab doors that slide up. It's really gotten old. Even a lot of the houses are the same.

Is it me or are picking locks always hard to do? In ACt 2 many locks need 30 cunning even right at the start. My rogues generally only have cunning in the early to mid 20's at this stage. Perhaps I'm not investing enough points into it. But if I miss Dex then I lose some crit hit bonuses.

Are they even worth picking?
In DA:O I did a play through with a rouge who could pick every lock, and it was mostly junk - hardly worth the investment.

It's just extra money. It's really sad to see the traditional rogue has all but gone extinct in modern RPGs.

on the flip side, it sucks to either always have to take a rogue in your party is miss out on that Sword of +++Awesomeness because you can't pick the lock on a cardboard box.

But you don't have to take the rogue, only if you want to find all the extra gear. Fighters can't have it all. :p

Were rogue's fun to play in the original DA:O? I started as a rogue but it looked like it was going to suck so I rerolled to a mage and loved (and never even kept any rogue's in my party). Now playing DA 2 ever since picking up the pirate girl I realize she is really fun to play and I want to go back to DA:O and play as a rogue if it's still fun
