Symantec AntiVirus Corp Ver. 8.00
We have it running on lots of XP, and 2k boxes (Dell desktops, and laptops)
most if not all are managed, as appossed to un-managed.
"I was surprised with its poor performance", with that said, we have other safe guards in place.
The feature I like with Symantec is adding additional extensions, and setting exclusions for particular files and folders (E-mail folders), so before a scanning it checks my exclusion list first.
I found this a vary handy tool....
EDIT: Oh, and editing the "Display Message"

Good God, what have you been downloading.
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but Panda Platinum (includes a firewall) is availiable for IT professionals and for students, etc. here. It's a great value for free, and it works quite well. Updates daily, and as long as you still qualify the next year, you get free yearly subscriptions. Enjoy!

When you scan the zip file, it detects one virus inside, and deletes the whole thing. The fact that it didn't detect the viruses until it viewed them doesn't bother me at all, as long as I just can't run them, that's good with me. However, the fact that it found 3 out of 7 is pretty bad. From what I can tell, it found the ones that were clearly viruses, but the IRC/ServU backdoor programs, it wouldn't detect. Oh well, at least it was free from my school.

Yup, I know what you mean. But a lot of us here have high-end systems which means one can run two virus aps. in the background and the computer doesn't bog down at all.
I am running Bitdefender and PC-Cillin plus PC-Cillin also had itd own firewall and all of my games run superb 🙂 besides by running two virus programs and running manual scans I believe one would not get infected so easily.
I still can't believe that I caught so many worms and virsues while running Norton (2003) and I was always updateing it too...go figure.

i currently run norton systemworks pro 2004 with norton antivirus 2004. i notice weird behavior with my av. The auto protect feature seems to scan files whenever it feels like it. sometimes i download a zip file from mirc and a little message notifys me that it is scanning it. other times i download another zip file and the av does nothing. the same behavior happens to rar and tar files. anybody got any ideas why?

Dude, I think you just don't "get it." For some of us who can't afford 8GB of RAM, we don't need extra memory hogs staying resident (virus scanning programs aren't known for light use of RAM). And it's not like they can stay swapped out most of the time, either, and since they will both be scanning every program that you run before it runs, you'll not only have increased memory consumption but also delayed program startup. For me, one AV program plus standard (or what should be standard) security precautions is plenty enough. I see no reason whatsoever that uninformed newbies should be told that they need two AV programs in addition to the normal security practices (as this will provide a false sense of "security" if they have "extra" protection, and the security precautions will become lax). If you want to be ultra-paranoid about this and have enough system re$ources not to worry about it, then go ahead, but don't go preaching it to everyone like the One and Only Truth, or you'll just look silly. 🙂

dude, I don't think you get it. He didn't preach that!! he said "IMHO" plus he's right a lot of people do run two AV programs and also run two or more anti-spyware programs jsut so their computer will be safer.
