I think you are underestimating how likely this is. If vote totals are hacked it will likely take a while to find out that it happened, some states might not be able to figure it out at all, and you can be sure that Trump will move aggressively to block any investigations into it if he does win. That gives him plenty of time to declare that he was the victor, that people investigating it are partisan sore losers, and that even if it happened it wasn't enough to sway the election anyway.
That sort of mixed result along with Trump's obvious unwillingness to give up power so that he doesn't go to jail would cause absolute chaos. If it turns out we find that the Russians did it if Trump is still president he's not going to do anything and Republicans will declare it all fake news anyway. This election is going to be super dangerous for our country.
If it doesn't work Russia will end up with the most hostile US posture outside worst days of the Cold War. Cyberwarfare retaliation would be a certainty plus somebody really motivated could cripple their economy quite rapidly and confiscate all that ill gotten wealth abroad. It's a really big risk to run.
