Besides the Dems not falling for this crap, the MAGA's have been so indoctrinated that they think a crappy, kick-the-can down the road three year DACA extension means amnesty.

The bill will likely get stuffed on a cloture vote in the Senate.

One of the Mitch’s claims about not holding a vote is that it would be “a waste of time” to vote on a bill that the President wouldn’t sign. Didn’t seem to stop him in 2015 when the Senate passed a bill to partially repeal the Affordable Care Act.

I don’t know if it’s the hypocrisy itself, or the fact that it’s so blatant and shameless, or that “flip-flopper!” used to be practically a Republican curse word hurled at Democratic candidates.

The problem is that Mitch is up for re-election in 2020 and he has incredibly shitty polling numbers. Just about any other Republican could primary his ass. Until Kavanaugh. McConnell's support of Trump's guy raised his poll numbers 17%. Mitch isn't stupid. As long as he is seen by the people of Kentucky to be Trump's stooge, he has a very good chance of being returned to DC. Break with Trump and he's toast.

His stubbornness also gives the rest of the Republicans political cover so they don't have to stick their necks out. Which is why they haven't replaced him as Majority Leader.

Things will look a lot different for Mitch's voters in the poorer regions of the state if SNAP benefits & housing benefits don't go out next month. Federal money is vital to the survival of a lot of those communities.

Trump has just incredibly misjudged the Democrats (especially Pelosi) at every god damned turn. It’s kind of impressive actually how bad he is at this.
He's used to fighting with small sub contractors that can't afford to actually fight him. His bully tactics don't work against people on even power footing.

I doubt he'll be able to adapt either. That's not what people of his age do particularly well and he's more set in his ways than most.

Bullying is also the low intelligence way of negotiating. Real back and forth takes some amount of brain power, so we know that won't happen.

As if the DACA temporary relief wasn't bad enough to torpedo the bill they are tabling, the GOP has added more poison pills including restricting minors to applying for asylum in their home countries. Any attempt to apply at the border would be deemed ineligible.

SCOTUS won't take the DACA case this term. Gov has to keep issuing renewals.

hm.. read that last week Trump signed into law that fed employees will get back pay after the shut down is over.

doesn't that screw over the people currently required to work while non-essentials are sitting at home?

isn't that always how it works with shutdowns? all the non-essential workers end up getting paid for doing nothing.

Trump's number one criteria for doing anything is making sure it screws over the maximum number of people.

Won't hold a vote on a bill that would pass because it would be a waste of time. Holds vote on a bill that won't pass because?

The Speaker and Majority Leader have way too much power.

Another pointless act by Mitch McConnell, won't even get out of this Republican controlled Senate.

Meanwhile... over at the house.
Trump still isn't getting his state of the union speech. At least not in joint session. He "could" give his address in a airport hanger as he did during the campaign, or in Moscow at Putin's palace. Or during his next Kim Jong Un meeting. Just go into his speech while talking to Kim.
Regardless, Trump insists on giving his speech despite the state of the union being pretty bleak at the moment, and people are suffering.
For Trump to remain in denial and insist government workers are "on his side" in this shutdown... well thats like losing ones job by still spending money as if nothing ever happened.
Trump is pretending people are with him, that they want the wall, and all is well in the good old U S of A.

A prediction.
When the government does finally reopen, we can bet Donald Trump will claim the shutdown wasn't so bad after all AND... Donald will tweet MAYBE WE DON'T NEED THE GOVERNMENT?
Trump will pretend no harm was suffered and thus we should close the government permanently.

That's a big deal. DACA stays in place, Trump can't stop it, and his bargaining chip is gone. Trump was betting big on the SCOTUS giving him what he wanted. Now he can start insulting the SCOTUS.

It's the only way McConnell can show Trump that he doesn't have the power to give Trump what he wants. He never did, with Dems in control of the HOR. He's stalled as long as he can in deference to the President's famous deal making abilities.

OTOH, Congress can & likely will deliver a bill the re-open the govt, at least for awhile. Should Trump veto, he alone will own the shutdown. Because Wall! is more important than a functional govt & honest govt workers getting paid.

Not at all. McConnell never wanted this shutdown. I figure Trump double crossed him at the last minute, thanks to Coulter & Limbaugh. So he lets the shutdown go on long enough to let Trump burn off political capital like it was going out of style. Now that he's made all the right noises long enough he'll re-introduce Trump to political reality.

Which isn't to say that it's not all just a power game to Mitch. He'll do his best to make anybody who double crosses him suffer dearly.

Well that does sound like Mitch.
