One of the Mitch’s claims about not holding a vote is that it would be “a waste of time” to vote on a bill that the President wouldn’t sign. Didn’t seem to stop him in 2015 when the Senate passed a bill to partially repeal the Affordable Care Act.

I don’t know if it’s the hypocrisy itself, or the fact that it’s so blatant and shameless, or that “flip-flopper!” used to be practically a Republican curse word hurled at Democratic candidates.

The problem is that Mitch is up for re-election in 2020 and he has incredibly shitty polling numbers. Just about any other Republican could primary his ass. Until Kavanaugh. McConnell's support of Trump's guy raised his poll numbers 17%. Mitch isn't stupid. As long as he is seen by the people of Kentucky to be Trump's stooge, he has a very good chance of being returned to DC. Break with Trump and he's toast.

His stubbornness also gives the rest of the Republicans political cover so they don't have to stick their necks out. Which is why they haven't replaced him as Majority Leader.

Things will look a lot different for Mitch's voters in the poorer regions of the state if SNAP benefits & housing benefits don't go out next month. Federal money is vital to the survival of a lot of those communities.

Trump's number one criteria for doing anything is making sure it screws over the maximum number of people.

Trump still isn't getting his state of the union speech. At least not in joint session. He "could" give his address in a airport hanger as he did during the campaign, or in Moscow at Putin's palace. Or during his next Kim Jong Un meeting. Just go into his speech while talking to Kim.
Regardless, Trump insists on giving his speech despite the state of the union being pretty bleak at the moment, and people are suffering.
For Trump to remain in denial and insist government workers are "on his side" in this shutdown... well thats like losing ones job by still spending money as if nothing ever happened.

That's a big deal. DACA stays in place, Trump can't stop it, and his bargaining chip is gone. Trump was betting big on the SCOTUS giving him what he wanted. Now he can start insulting the SCOTUS.

So he lets the shutdown go on long enough to let Trump burn off political capital like it was going out of style. Now that he's made all the right noises long enough he'll re-introduce Trump to political reality.
