I am not trying to support anyone.

If the guy was posting images that would be considered pedo, why wasn't the FBI involved? How long was this going on?

If the images were that offensive, why hadn't the FBI kicked the guys door in at 3am?

If the guy was posting images from a company computer, then yea, maybe so.

Granted, I haven't looked at what was on the site, but based on these reports he was moderating and 'supporting' a section purely devoted to sexual representations of little kids. Per the line of the law it may be legal, but it is still sexual representations of kids.

Notice I'm not saying he should be jailed.... But I don't blame his employer one bit for firing him.

I am a huge proponent of privacy, freedom of speech, etc. My posts very much reflect that, but I am also a a supporter of 'right to hire right to fire' and I would definitely fire that guy on the spot.

Like I said... What happens when other people at the office find out about this? What happens if someone claims some sort of sexual harassment, against a company who knowingly employed this guy..?

Did you guys read the link? It was said that most of the pics were pulled from facebook. I never been to the jailbait reddit but what is the FBI going to do with teens in bikinis pics? They would have to shut down facebook if that was the case. Now I'm willing to bet there were more questionable stuff but I'll never know.

From what I know Reddit actually did a good job of cleaning it up. Same as 4chan. In fact I'm not sure where people get this "child porn haven" title for 4chan. Rarely does a CP image survive more than a few minutes. The army of mods there are really quite impressive.

Its a gray area of the law.

Some states prohibit images of clothed children in sexual positions. But if the kids were not in sexual positions, then there was little the state could do.

If I was the guys employer, I would have probably fired him as well.

I would not want my company elated to borderline pedo material.

best advice I've ever been given was to never put anything in print that you wouldn't be comfortable sharing with the entire world.

Now we're getting into thoughtcrime. The only question is "were the pictures legal?" If so, nothing else matters. People's intent can't be known, and it doesn't matter.

If we are discussing legally i agree, but we are discussing employment and what not to do if you want to stay employed. I should have taken it one set further, he did not seek out the content, he was actively posting it.

I'm fairly indifferent regarding his employment. Good arguments can be made either way. The particulars matter in this case. As noted above, his employer was kind of sleezy, so I don't know how that works out. Could the negative attention affect the company? I suspect not, but I can't blame them for getting rid of him.

There have been stories of adults being fired for posting nude images of themselves on the net.

One story was about a husband a wife, both nurses at a hospital, who ran an adult website. The husband and wife posted pictures of themselves having sex.

They were rated out when a patient at the hospital recognized one of them.

The hospital looked into the issue, then fired both the husband and the wife.

Did they do anything illegal? Nope, both were consenting adults.

The difference between the husband and wife and the kids posted on reddit, the husband and wife willingly took those pics, the children were taken advantage of.

i actually thought the govt made all of it illegal, even animated stuff involving children - this would have happened ~5 years ago, remember various anime forums getting pissed about it

Where do we draw the line between child models, and exploiting children?

Picture of a 10 year old girl wearing a bikini on a beach, is that pedo, or a model for sears, walmart, kmart, amazon,,,,?

In the case of reddit, anything without the child and parents knowledge is exploitation.

Doxing people is distasteful, but fair game AFAIC. If you don't want your identities linked, secure your shit.

this. I think it sucks that some idiots felt it was their moral obligation to out someone for doing things they have an issue with when they should just shut the fuck up as there is NO VICTIM to this NONCRIME. But that's the price you pay for not covering your tracks well enough. The bigger the asshole you wish to be, the better you need to go about disconnecting the internet persona from your real life persona.

Old media don't know what "troll" means. If his sole purpose of posting those images was to get others riled up and angry, then he's a troll. If he masturbates to them, he's not (he's much worse).

it did sound like he was engaged in legit trolling (eg: creating a "Hitler" fan subforum)

Yeah he was quoted as saying he "liked to rile people up".

My wife is disabled. I got a home and a mortgage, and if this hits the fan, I believe this will affect negatively on my employment," he said. "I do my job, go home watch TV, and go on the internet. I just like riling people up in my spare time.

sounds like a troll to me

You bold a quote by the troll in question and you based your assumption on his own quote. Let me guess, you're one of those that believe everything Mitt Romney says during his campaigning speeches.

How can he be an asshole and yet you say there are no victims. I would say each of those underage girls are a victim as are the people this guy trolled. Illegal no but he was trying to rile people up, thus he had a target = a victim.

Agree with this, plus what happens when your customers find out you employ this guy.
