To me, there is no intelligent dog. If there is one capable of rational, cognitive thought then you can come talk about intelligence.

bow = wow, wow = bow.

bow = woof, woof = wow, bow = wow.

bow + wow = woof
bow = woof - wow

Bow-wow? 😕

I would've thought Golden Retriever would be #1.
I agree,

For me it's

Golden Retriever
Newfoundland
Border Collie

No way. Have you owned both a Border Collie and a Golden? Border Collies are much smarter

True, Border Collies are very smart. I grew up in a house with one and she figured out how to move chairs to reach higher places (believe you me, we didn't teach her that one) and she also figured out that bringing you her leash would only increase her chances of getting a walk in.

She also knew tons of commands and knew everyone in the family by name.

So while Golden's are smart (and great dogs too), they are not that smart.

My family had a Norwegian Elk Hound when I was little. As a puppy, he figured how to let himself in and out by poking his head in a hole in the screen door and walking sideways to slide it open. It took my mom a little while to figure out how he was letting himself back inside.

We've also had a yellow Lab and by and large they are very intelligent. They just have this dopey kind of personality about them.

I dunno, I would've thought my Dachshund would've ranked higher than 49th. She learns tricks / commands within 3 times and obeys on issue. Maybe mine's a fluke?

I also agree that obedience doesn't constitute intelligence. My friend's dog will hardly do anything you tell it; but, it figured out how to open the fridge, house doors & screens, and cabinets to get snacks, food, go outside, etc.

lmao at some of you arguing that trainability/obedience isn't the same as intelligence.
"Yeah, well, the other day, I asked my Afghan Hound (ranked last) to fetch me a beer. He flipped me the middle finger, and in sign language said, 'get it yourself, you lazy human.' And you guys are calling him stupid."

Yeah, I agree with the list... I've had quite a few of the breeds on that list since I was a kid. I'm sure there's a little variation among individual animals; my golden retriever isn't the smartest thing in the world. As far as obedience goes, he's horrible compared to my other two dogs which are more obedient (mixed breeds, but made up of breeds ranked in the top 10).

These fewls have never heard of the rare German breed, Kleine Münsterlander. I am happy to say my father owns 1 of about 300 in the USA. Smartest dogs in the world.

This list is crazy. Our little chihuahua (Jasmine) is quite intelligent, I think.
I mean.. when I grab the bag full of trash out of the trash can, she'll come running through the kitchen and stand waiting by the back door. She knows that means I'm going outside, so she'll get to sneak out too 🙂

Then, when my wife comes home, and she just happens to grab McDonalds on the way.. well.. that little 4 legged $hit knows what the McDonald's bag is all about! Jasmine loves french fries!

no any retarded dog can do that. I've seen rotts that know how 2 open gates by lefting the latch then pulling it up then pulling out the shaft.

So you are indicating only humans are intelligent? The same species that kills itself every day for various reasons, destroys it's habitat, knows better about diet but still eats crap.

Yah we are complete Brainiacs.

Intelligence is measured in many many ways, not the one you have made up for yourself.

We have a sheltie - number six on the list - and he indeed is a pretty smart dog. We used to have a pug and I thought he was pretty damn smart as well, arguably more so than the sheltie, however pugs got ranked somewhat lower on the list. That being said it was all my personal anecdotal evidence, I have no way of testing a dog's intelligence.
