German Shepherds are great dogs, really smart and the will rip the face/limbs off anyone who tries to hurt you.

I think dachshunds should rank higher on the list. All the dachshunds I have had were extremely intelligent (and belligerent).

If anyone has any suggestions on a good family friendly dog in the top 10 on that list I would appreciate it. Also a dog good to be around my son, who has autism, would be great as well....

Female standard (50 pound range) poodle.

The absolute best family dog. Loving, smart, loving, don't shed, no odor, and did I mention loving?

Was thinking about getting a G.Shepherd, how much would a purebred puppy run me $ wise?

You can get then for $200 or less but then you need to add another $3k for hip replacement or you can spend $600+++++++ and still have a chance at spending that $3k. Most of the good breeders will guarantee their hips but that just means they will buy the dog back and after having a dog for a year or so who is going to want to give up their dog. My parents just payed that $3k on their $600 shepherd and my 10 year old $200 one has the same problem. There are shepherd rescues all over the place since they are such a popular dog. That way you could get a 1+ year old dog and have its hips x-rayed plus you can miss most of the annoying puppy stuff.

I agree with that list...I have a poodle..he's not frilly at all, loves to hunt...and he's so smart I sometimes fear he's turning human.

He knows exactly what i'm doing at all times. It's kind of freaky.

My dog's breed isn't listed. 🙁

I disagree with the Australian Shepard at #45, they should be higher. Labrador Retriever at #7? I've known a few different people with yellow labs and they are all fvcking idiots.

I'm surprised cocker spaniels are so highly ranked (#20).
I'm surprised at all the high ranking spaniels. Never met one of any variant that wasn't as dumb as a box of rocks.

a really wonderful dog to meet with :3 !!!!
haha...you have a shitpoo! 😛

lol 😛

Great Danes are tied with Boxers at 48, which sounds about right. Average or low average intelligence. Danes are great personality dogs, but they're not generally the brightest bulbs. The list isn't bad, given the way they judged the dogs. I would question if the way they judged them is the best way.

That's a ranking of obedience rather than intelligence. The 2 are not necessarily the same thing. Just because a particular breed might have a streak of independence does not mean that it is not intelligent.

Agreed.

Compliance != intelligence. I have a Rhodesian which ranks in the 50's. I'd agree that she isn't the most responsive to commands. It's not because she's dumb, but because she's stubborn.

Some of the most "trainable" and "compliant" human beings are also mentally handicapped. Many functional mentally challenged people will follow commands all day long...but some of them aren't able to tie their own shoes.

Does that make them smart?

But there are plenty of poodles who don't obey commands/aren't obedient..so your argument means nothing, IMO.

Who gives a ****** anyway...why does anyone need their dogs' intelligence proven?

That list is BS. The more popular breeds are at the top. Doesnt mean they are any smarter.

It's not BS.

They're more popular for a reason. While most people will seek out an intelligent dog, who's going to look for the dumbest dog they can find?

My dog scored higher on an online intelligence test than your dog.

I can attest to the Border Collie intelligence[...]

Being the smartass dog that she was, she would sit at the beeping range and let the battery run down till it couldn't shock her, then proceed to go over to the neighbors to herd their animals. She would also routinely test the fence to see if there were any breaks in the line. Often something would cut the wire such as a gopher. They are definately smart dogs.

You sure it's not a raptor? 😕 :Q

In terms of the obedient=intelligent debate, I think it is more about "attentive", and the ability to focus and maintain attention, which leads to quick understanding. One of my good friends has a aussie cattle dog, and I swear I have never met a more attentive or focused dog.

I disagree with that list.

If you can honestly tell me that an Akita, or a Shiba Inu is a dumb dog, and yet they are not even on the list.

You know why? Because they never obey any commands. Sure they will do stuff, but only if they percieve it to be beneficial to them.

No American Eskimo?? Pretty intelligent breed and they are pretty too. Well if you are into the white fluffy type a dawg

I would've thought Golden Retriever would be #1.
I agree,

For me it's

Golden Retriever
Newfoundland
Border Collie

No way. Have you owned both a Border Collie and a Golden? Border Collies are much smarter

Indeed. I've met many retrievers that were thick as pigsh1t 😉

Having worked with Border Collies and Australian Sheep Dogs, they are infinitely brighter in general...

The Australian Sheep dogs are much more robust that border collies tho.
