a purebred dog can run you anywhere from $800 - $2000... i believe my cousin got her purebred german shepherd for somewhere in the $1000 range.. she paid about $2000 for her purebred rott... supposedly from good bloodlines or whatever...

go to the pound and rescue an animal!!

and also, i had no idea poodles were "intelligent"... i just thought they were annoying little sh!ts

It'll probably be expensive since shephards are pretty popular. The vet bills for hip dysplasia might be pretty high too...

I can attest to the Border Collie intelligence, and not just the following of commands. We had one that died recently(after 14 years). We live in the country where dogs get hit by cars a lot(even smart ones). So we have shock callers on our dogs so they wont go into the road or our neighbors yard. The caller would beep for a set distance before it shocked the dog as a warning.

Being the smartass dog that she was, she would sit at the beeping range and let the battery run down till it couldn't shock her, then proceed to go over to the neighbors to herd their animals. She would also routinely test the fence to see if there were any breaks in the line. Often something would cut the wire such as a gopher. They are definately smart dogs.

Wow that's a chunk of change... Maybe I should just go to the pound and rescue a puppy, you're right. How does your cousin like the dog? Is it pretty chill and easy to train?

Jack Russel's are not recognized as a breed by the kennel club or whatever I don't believe.

I love the JRT. Great, smart, small dogs.

Wrong... Jack Russels have their own AKC registration... or alternately they can be registered with JRTCA, however they cant be registered with both.

We have a German Shepherd and a Golden Retriever, the German Shepherd figured out the invisible fence/collar in 2-3 zaps, the Golden Retriever took much longer.

I'm surprised at all the high ranking spaniels. Never met one of any variant that wasn't as dumb as a box of rocks.

I heard of a wolf (someones pet) doing this exact same thing. My border collie is an idiot. Go figure

I was thinking the same thing.
Beagles are darn smart. Maybe they dont cowtow to human demands but they are intelligent.

I think the list should be changed to "Ranked by Obedience".

Yep, that list is totally FUBAR in my opinion. I've trained working/hunting dogs for over 25yrs and many of the dogs they list as excellent working dogs 11-26 should be in the top ten IMO. For example Brittany's are listed as 19th:confused:, yet as a breed they have won more dual championships show/field than any other breed by a large margin. I only agree with 3 of their top ten, Border collies, Golden Retrievers, & Aussie cattledogs

Agreed.

I've always thought that Jack Russels and other types of fox terriers were the most intelligent.

I won't argue the Border Collie being the smartest, they definetly are, but somehow Golden Retrievers are #4 ?! Please! I've seen goldens run into trees before.
I've known some damn smart Aussie cattle dogs though.
Anatolian shephards are probably in the top 5 intellect wise, and likely the best working dog period yet there's no mention of them anywhere.

whiskey...tango....foxtrot....

What do I think of those lists? Heh, not much!

I mean, congratulations, you found or bred a dog that has uniform color, is within tight height/weight tolerances, ad will let you examine his testicles without issue. Now, here's your medal, you special person you!

Yeah, I don't get standards/appearance shows at all. However the PSA championships are amazing to watch. You can see clips of dogs preparing for it by going here (and scrolling down).

My sister-in-law got this dog when he was a puppy from the Humane Society for around $35. There are German Shepherd specific rescue organizations too.

Another beagle owner here. I'd say that list is correct. Sometimes I think she is brain damaged, but shes' just stupid. I regret getting a beagle. I am contemplating getting rid of her and getting another type of dog.

My grandma had a Aussie sheep dog and I loved it. I definetly will get something in the top 10 on that list...

LOL. Your poor beagle. I haven't ever been around a beagle before, but they look like pretty good dogs.

If anyone has any suggestions on a good family friendly dog in the top 10 on that list I would appreciate it. Also a dog good to be around my son, who has autism, would be great as well....

Don't get me wrong, I'll be sad to see her go, but shes' just not the right type of dog for us... I should have done some research beforehand but I fell in love with her cute little puppy face at the time...
