<< The styling is why I love Pontiac, bold, and original, not a cookie cutter style like all the Jap's! >>

The only thing original about Pontiac's styling is how the plastic body parts look like they could fall off at any moment.

Haha, that's what I was going to say ... damn you beat me to it.

<< IMO trucks are a joke, they are fugly and are rarely used for their utilitarian reasons. I don't understand why so many people have them. So they can move their couch every couple of years? >>

Just when I thought you typed the dumbest thing I've seen you just keep typing. your obviously very clueless.

I had my trailor brake unit installed the 2nd or 3rd day I had my current truck and was using it to pull an 1800lb dunlap with a 3500lb car on it.

Opinions are one thing, but what you got, well just sounds plain stupid to me 🙂

From my experience, the only GM cars I would even consider are Buicks with 3800 V6s

The 3800 is a great engine, it's what I have in my Grand Prix, I looked at the Buick's, but they are just too conservative for me.

I still prefer the 3.5 liter "Shortstar" V6 from the Oldsmobile Intrigue. It's based on the fabulous Northstar V8. I also prefer the styling of the Intrigue to the Grand Prix as well. Oldsmobile has the best looking cars in GM's lineup...yet they kill the brand:|:|

The "Shortstar" is also more fuel-efficient than the standard 200HP 3.8 liter V6 as well as the 240HP supercharged version of the 3.8. Hell, it's even more fuel efficient than the base 3.1 liter V6 from the base Grand Prix.

I think it's time for GM to start tweaking the hell out of that engine and kicking the 3800 to the curb. It's old as dirt.

The 3800 is less complex and has more lowend torque than the Olds 3.5 the fuel economy is virtually identical, it even outruns it 0 to 60, I don't know about longterm longevity on the 3.5, but I've had 3.8's for years, and they last forever.

The 3800 isn't gonna last much longer...NVH issues and emissions are going to be the end of it. I also believe that the 3.5 weighs quite a bit less as well. The 3.5 also compares favorably to the imports V6's in smoothness and quietness as well (Honda's 3.0 V6, Toyota's 3.0 V6, Nissan's 3.5 V6), but the 3.8 leaves much to be desired in that arena.

The 3.8 is only rough close to redline, but it has enough torque, I rarely take it there, the 3800 in the GP makes 85% of peak torque from 1000rpm to redline, quite impressive from any engine, even more from a ohv engine designed in 1964.

True, but the Grand Prix along with the Accord, Camry, Intrigue, etc are all still family sedans. Low-end torque is not on the check-list of the majority people that buy these types of cars.

Smoothness, refinement, quietness, and fuel economy are however.

Brandon,

you would like to see my cousins Olds Alero, 5 spd

it is 2.4L straight 4, burgundy red, white guages..

slick as hell

I like the Intrigue, I think the interior quality is better than the GP, but my wife hated it, she wanted the Buick Regal, we agreed on the GT sedan, and it's been a great car, and we both like it. What do you drive NFS4? I have the GT, a 93 S-10 ext cab with 4.3 and a 5spd, a 2000 Suzuki Bandit 1200, and a 2002 Aztec company car.

I drive a '95 Camry LE. Has just about every option available. 105,000 miles and still going.

I used to have an '87 Pontiac Sunbird...and thus started my hatred for Pontiac😉

Brandon, I can see why you were put off on Pontiac's, 87 Sunbird's were trash, this is my 2nd GP, my 1st was a 1981, I bought new, never had any problems with it, but only had it for a yr, then traded for a 1982 Mustang Gt, that was a great car!

Hee hee - on the one hand you are saying that Japanese cars are bad because you had a bad '85 Isuzu, and on the other you are agreeing that '87 Sunbirds sucked but implying that it does not indicate any problems with GM quality. For my part I can't imagine I would ever buy an Isuzu OR a Pontiac (though in the Battle of the Futuristically-Styled SUVs I would take an Axiom over an Aztek every day of the week, and twice on Sundays).

<< Maxima is where it's at. Anyone getting a pontiac over a maxima needs to get their head checked. >>

My buddy wished he had bought a Grand Prix, instead of his 99 Maxima, what a POS! Engine totally exploded at 30,000 miles, it's been in the shop constantly. He drove my Grand Prix, and was impressed with the torque, I get better mileage, and he has to use 92 oct in the Maxima. Beside's Maxima's are just so plain looking, I will agree the Maxima interior is better quality.

The same guy bought a Mazda MPV, when I bought a Ford Ranger, he kept telling me what a POS American car's were. Well he put 120,000 miles on the Mazda, ony needed 2 engine rebuild's! My Ranger went 250,000 miles, and the engine still ran perfect, when I sold it, the guy that bought it couldn't believe it, he said it drives like new!

<< Just turned 80,000 miles on my 99 Grand Prix GT. Just made a trip where a 75mph cruise got me 31mpg on 87 octane. Repair cost's to date ZERO! Had one warranty repair, the trunk release button came loose. I will never buy another Jap piece of Crap!! >>

Wow, that's incredible.
rolleye.gif

I got 33MPG on 87 octane at 85-90 MPH cruise in an 11 year old Honda station wagon with 123,000 miles on it last week on a hundred mile trip through Bay Area hills. Only mechanical problems were caused by a crappy mechanic and were taken care off.

So you're saying american cars are starting to get almost as good as japanese cars?

you don't have a 3400lb car with a 3.8 liter engine and automatic do you? Do you have 200hp and 230lb torque? Can you do 2nd gear burnout's, can you run 15.4 in the 1/4 in 101deg weather with 2 people in the car?

Childish thinking

Old catch phrase is

"My (insert your property) is ( pick one word...bigger, faster, better, quicker, prettier, etc) than yours"

No, the point of the whole thread, was a car with this weight and power that get 31mpg is impressive, when a guy says big deal, my compact car, with it's tiny engine gets better gas mileage, it's BS!

Heh...Maybe you have a point.

But I still wouldn't ever buy an American car. 😀

<< Can't wait to get my new company car, it's a Pontiac Aztec, should be in by next month. >>

Hmm, isn't there a new, less fugly model coming out? Based on the new Saturn VUE? (OMG, those freaking commericials annoy me)
I wouldn't just shoot myself... I'd shoot everyone around the car if it was the old one. Or better yet... send it to a chop shop and collect the insurace to buy a real company car.

I love my new Grand Prix GT. I was originally looking at the V6 Accord, but comparing the two I got more of everything in the Grand Prix at a smaller cost then the Accord.

Hell having the blasted Heads Up Display (HUD) alone is worthwhile for me to purchasing another GM in the future, well one that has that option at least.

Getting gas milage on a L36 engine in a Grand Prix that is similar to a Honda is pretty amazing when the Pontiac weighs more and has a much, much larger engine.

Also, for the new prototype of the Grand Prix, here is some info:
Pontiac G-Force

Also, the Grand AM has a lot of molding on it, but the Firebird, Bonneville, and Grand Prix don't. Heck, I have some molding, but not much at all. Not as much as I seen on riced out Civics, for example.

I think it is bias to say that all American cars suck, or all foreign cars suck or rock or whatever. Every manufacturer makes a few lemons and also great vehicles.

I think if you want better milage then go for the Honda or Toyota, but for pure displacement really can't beat Ford or GM. Then again that new 240hp Altima sounds cool.

Hmmm - this does not look too bad. I have thought for some time that the basic form of the GP was attractive, but the finishing and execution took it over the edge into garishness. This car looks pretty nice, but I guarantee much of that stuff would never make it into a production version (i.e., the carbon trim, bucket rear seats, etc). Strange they chose to make a show car with a beige interior - the aluminum trim would have looked much better against a gray or black interior IMO.
