Ah yes, same here. I quickly realized that running away right after handing over the stick was a very poor decision and that staying and receiving punishment was less painful.

OH YES. In my mom's dialect it was "guy moh soh". They gripped the feather part and used the bamboo part and boy did that sting. It was much worse when the bamboo split down the middle part ways and that really left a mark!

i was spanked when i was young and i was beaten when i was older. Mom had her subtle ways of inflicting pain, like fingernails digging into the armpit or neck. Dad was more to the point. Dad got his message across. he might have hit me 5 times, may have been 50, all i really remember is the look and when he pointed a finger at one of us, we knew we should tread carefully. we rarely made the same mistake twice with Dad.

i spanked my son twice. never hit him hard or plan to but theres nothing wrong with a bit of wrestling/roughhousing/mayhem to reinforce the authoritave structure of the family.

Edited: In my parents house, i never run away from it but my older brother used to put a notebook in his pants one time and my sis tried to wear multiple pants.
 
It's too bad we can't spank others in general to encourage social development and personal growth. we save the best things for our children, but really i think there is enough to go around imo.
 
i was spanked.
When I got old enough spanks became slaps from mom & my dad went upside my head knocking me to the floor, once. Being a smartass 17 year old (hmm. imagine that) FTL.


 
You also have to define what kind it is. When my daughter is not listening well to what I'm saying/distracted/being rude, a quick (not hard) swat to the butt will get her attention. No pain, but it lets her know I'm talking, and she better listen.

My younger daughter, spanking is incredibly ineffective, and putting her on a stool is MUCH worse then any spank that I could give (that wouldn't be child abuse).


we also work hard to make sure we encourage/reinforce GOOD behavior as much as bad.

the problem starts when parents spank because thats their only response. think how pathetic it is to resort to violence with adults and then try to comprehend that as a child.

edit- i was dealt with when i was a problem, but i knew what i did wrong and it was me continuing to do what i knew was wrong that got dealt with. i knew why i was punished. as a human, resorting to violence without provocation is pathetic, as a parent its irresponsible and disgusting.

I would like to spank my kids someday too when needed but my gf is totally against it.

In Cantonese, it was called the "gai mo so" (chicken feather duster). My parents never spanked me, but my mean sister did.

Whenever I did something bad, she would just hit me without any warning. When my parents were around, they would just tell me what I did and why it was wrong, which made me feel bad enough to stop being disobedient.

Certain kids you can reason with while others just need to get their ass kicked so they know who's boss. So yes, please spank your kids!
 
i used to get spanked bare butt and hand from my dad. Man that hurt. But my mom would use the wooden spoon. She had that thing for years and she stopped spanking me when the spoon broke. That one hurt but i was around 11-12 years old. My dad stopped when i was around 12 and was able to catch his hand and told him no.
