hahaha, ah the memories... oh wait :(

It's called a feather duster... broke many the hard way.
You know, I never even thought twice about what it actually was... I only knew what it was used for on me... no lie.

From the best of my knowledge, I was spanked maybe all of two times while growing up, so I selected white/caucasian and not spanked in the poll. While I won't argue against spanking, I will say that in most instances, there likely are more effective options available. If your child is about to run across a busy street and you want to immediately get the point across that this course of action is NOT acceptable, a spanking might be warranted. But barring something of that nature, as I said, I wouldn't feel it to be necessary.

Beyond that, if you spank with anything more than an open hand, then--at least in my mind--it's beginning to border on abuse.

White American - spanked as a child?..damn straight, effective? ....Oh ya, Abusive?... pfft  my folks were more than fair with me, but cross the line...hehe
lookout. I only really remember getting spanked as a young child, the threat became very effective early on.

Even the public school I attended used Corporal Punishment until I was probably in the 7th grade (1972) (small rural school outside Oregon City, K-8th grade) It was actually a great little school, strict discipline, but it kept us unruly farm kids in-line;)

The neighbors would also call your folks if they saw you doing something out of line. We learned early on to not hassle our parents, keep in-line at school, and keep your monkee business out of sight ;)

The arraingment seemed to work well back then where I grew up.

Same. I think I was spanked two or three times... it was quite effective for me.

I was spanked. My mom said I never needed a spanking in public, but I bet if I did, she would've done some sort of punishment. When I talked back, she flicked my lips. She only ever needed to do that once.

Now grown up, I'm thankful for it. Also, now that I understand shame and humiliation as an adult, it helped me mature from becoming an ass to even the retail workers. You really can't reason with kids, usually, and I think her punishment suited my actions.

[edit]They never used a spoon or a belt on me. They only ever smacked my palms and that was enough to send some pain.

The spanking stopped after elementary school (or maybe before it, can't remember). It turned into the, "I'm disappointed in you" line, and that was enough to make me feel miserable.

No, but I would understand if I was. I am Arabian by the way, and will spank my kids when they are young, then I will never do it again.

Asian and I was beat. Sometimes it was abuse as my dad was a slight alcoholic.

I turned out fine - out of college, just got a promotion, have a loving GF and etc. All's well with my family, I love my mom and dad to death and vice versa.

Will I spank my child? Hell no. I will never lay a finger. Spanking don't do shiit if you know how to control your kids with stern words and disciplining them verbally can go a long way.

What's race got to do with it?

Yes I got the belt or the shoe, depending on if it was mom or dad, that pretty much ended around age eight I think, not because I was too old, but I think because I quit doing stuff that warranted it.

Nobody I know (or can think of ATM anyway) is against spanking kids, and I don't think anyone that is against it has actually spent that much time dealing with kids, kinda like veggie-nuts that have never even seen a farm/ranch/etc.

Oh BTW, if you know anyone against it, get them a job cleaning school busses. That's what I've done all summer, but even a week of it would be enough to convince anyone of the need for corporal punishment. Well, for that matter I suppose we could start with carrying through with our non-bodily punishments, you know, just to begin with.

A whitey and spanked but only when it was needed.

It's funny you mention that as I believe it's FEAR in general that keeps this world in any sort of order.

White and was spanked. I am very grateful that my parents spanked us. Although I wasn't at the time...LOL

Only had to spank my kids a couple times. They know I would spank em in a heartbeat so they just don't do it.

It has a lot to do with it. Asians do not hesitate on corporal punishment.

I've never heard of that before, maybe it's because I'm in the midwest and there's not a lot of asians out here? I dunno

i was spanked, so were my siblings, when we had been given our fair warnings and (usually) otherwise punished beforehand

i have 2 kids and do the same. usually i take away something or send them to their room or some such, spanking works only at certain times for certain problems with them, usually i prefer to give another punishment and explain to them why what they did was wrong and why theyre in trouble.

theyre usually pretty well behaved (one is almost 4, the other almost 6)

It's fairly standard practice.

I was but my mother would only locked me in the bedroom for some time. I used to cry out loud in the beginning, banged the door, and sprawl on the floor but it would usually died down in the end. It's very effective though. I emerged meek as a lamb after every lockup.

I was spanked and support spanking - but it didn't do much for me, I was still a little shit. Spanking doesn't make a parent good, it's only a good start.
