When people talk about someone being Asian, they don't mean they are from Asia.
Sure, technically, Indians are Asian. But most people consider Asian an ethnic group, not a geographical group. And we tend to group ethnicities by what they look like.
Would you call somebody from Russia an Asian?
To most people, Asian means Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and others with similar facial characteristics.
EDIT: just to be PC here, I'm not saying they all look alike, ok. But to us caucasians, the people of those countries share similar facial characteristics. To be honest, most caucasians can't tell which of those countries somebody is from while I would suspect that somebody native to those countries would see differences that we don't notice.
Indians and Pakistanis are seen as their own ethnic group distinct from Asians.

I also consider Canadians and Mexicans to be "American" too, "North American", that is.
I think the true factor here is we, as Americans are so "arrogant/ignorant" (used loosely now for lack of better words), that we group "Asians" and "Africans" by their continent and not their country respectively. It's actually quite sad imo.
Here's an example which I'm sure not everyone will relate too, but is some of the reasoning behind my comment:
I'm Chinese, and my grandfather simple detests being "Asian" because it also groups other countries such as Japan who in HIS time invaded his village in China, etc... I think we should just call ppl by their country. I think people deserve at least that.
It's not a Nigerian's person's fault we don't know the name of his country so we just group him as African.

Your sig isn't entirely true. It should read "If God didn't design it, an artist designed it, an engineer made it work".

Partially true, but not for everything. Surely an artist would have a hand in the outside appearance of a car, but forsomething like a dam or an industrial robot, I'd say that's pretty much all engineer.

You do realize that there a lot of countries in Africa. If you expect an American to group Africans by their country, do you also expect Africans to group Americans by the state in which they live? Of course not.
I, as an American, am not "arrogant/ignorant. Speak for yourself.
