Who're these "many"? If we're part of the Orient then we're Oriental.

I think that was the point. We didn't call it the orient. Marco Polo named it the Orient. It's like calling a Native American guy an Indian. If I'm wrong, blame my Asia History teacher over at Cal. That's where I learned it.

On this forum "Asian" is frequently used to mean what used to be or maybe still is called "Oriental".

Although some people seem to consider that archaic or even worse, I don't really know if this is accurate or just something that the younger generation doesn't care for.

Well, isn't Asia a European word too ?

Oh yea, and we Americans consider all the peoples from countries in North and South America, Americans.

So there. :sun:

The word orient means 'where the Sun rises' i.e. the east. Given that China/Japan etc. were east of from where the Europeans were travelling the name makes perfect sense.

Back to the original question, I have never considered Indians anything other than Asians.

I think the true factor here is we, as Americans are so "arrogant/ignorant" (used loosely now for lack of better words), that we group "Asians" and "Africans" by their continent and not their country respectively. It's actually quite sad imo.

Here's an example which I'm sure not everyone will relate too, but is some of the reasoning behind my comment:

I'm Chinese, and my grandfather simple detests being "Asian" because it also groups other countries such as Japan who in HIS time invaded his village in China, etc... I think we should just call ppl by their country. I think people deserve at least that.

It's not a Nigerian's person's fault we don't know the name of his country so we just group him as African.

my $.02

It not that people are so "arrogant/ignorant" it is we just don't care what 3rd world country your came from. I also think it is stupid that the "asian" people hijacked the term to only mean the people from a small part of asia.

No... I'm from the United States of America and I don't call myself North American... I don't know any Mexicans who call themselves Central American either.

Asian makes me think of almond shaped eyes. That is not common in India.
But if they consider themselves Asian, so be it. The peoples of Eastern Russia and natives of Alaska have similar Asian eyes....BTW, I'm Northern European mix.....:sun:

i think you should call them by their ethnicity and culture. that makes tons more sense than location. otherwise, caucasion "americans" born in US territory in other countries would be called asian/european.

yes..don't use oriental..change the poll to asian

i don't really take offense, but many do.

oriental is used for inanimate objects that originated from asia. So you're basically calling them something that's less than the lowest form of a living organism. so please, change it to asian

Wait! I'm confused. Oriental means from the east but since most of us live in the US, doesn't that make Orientals people from Europe? ;)

I say we call orientals occidentals since they are now technically from the west.

I am from India and used to consider myself Asian until I came here (of course, was forced to answer Asian on a recent survey here in the US
rolleye.gif
). But back in India, I believe the phrase 'people of the Indian subcontinent' is becoming more acceptable and it includes people from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. I have a problem calling myself Indian in the US because to most Americans, Indians seem to refer to Native Americans. Guess 400 years is not enough time to correct the mistake :p

BTW, if it is of any significance to this thread, I used to have to ask for Asian Vegetarian meals on flights while going to India on vacation. I understand it is now 'Indian Vegetarian' meals. So, that's probably it - we're Indians.

In Vancouver, Canada, I find that most people refer to people from India as "East Indian" and refer to Native Canadians as "Indians".

IMO: Asian continent = Asian

Well, india is considered a subcontinent.
That makes the sub-Asian?

They are South Asian, as opposed to East Asian like Chinks, Nips, Gooks, etc.

This is how I look at things.
South Asian is pakistani, nepalese, Indians, and Sri Lankans.
Southeast Asian is Indonesians, Thai, Malays, etc.
East Asian is Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Mongolian, Taiwanese

If you want to be geographical about it we're all Asian...its just that in our society Asian typically refers to someone who is East Asian.
