To all of you "They are ASIANS no matter what you think since india is part of the Asia". Who gives a fvck. We all still think of Asians as people from countries such as China, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, etc. Who here refers to people from india as Asans on a daily basis? I don't know anyone who does. I call them Indians. Screw this "TECHNICALLY they are Asian" crap.

Actually, I generally refer to them as people.

Wow...just wow.

Wow, are you serious?

serious about what? the origins of the term Oriental?

Serious about acting so offended

Yeah and the word "Oriental" most certainly isn't Asian

Probably not, but what does it mean?

Oriental means "eastern" just as Occidental means "western" -- so most white people are Occidentals ;)

it's a eurocentric word meaning east of europe. as in .. europe is the center of the world.

OK - I thought it only meant Eastern. Don't many Asians refer to Americans as "Westerners"?

What is the origins of this understanding of "oriental" as refering to inaminate objects only, or being a slur ? The part about inaminate objects seems particularly stupid, American and European are used to refer to objects that come from those parts of the world, and this doesn't mean it doesn't also mean a person from that part of the world.

And "Asia" the word, is what the Romans called the places east of them, I think, so why does anyone make a distinction between "Asian" and Oriental" when they are both European words for places east of Europe ?

It seems like some people from eastern Asia decided they don't like the word "oriental", why, I don't know, and so decided to start misusing the word "Asian" to refer to themselves exclusively.

Oh, and mixing up the racial classifications, mongoloid, causcasian, etc, is even more inaccurate, because there are Caucasian people native to Asia, and mongoloid people native to America, etc.

well, from the poll, it seems as if most people don't consider indians to be asians...
BUT, indians do consider themselves asian.

I'm Indian and I don't consider myself Asian even though thats what I put on the census reports...I don't feel we look anything like Asians. We have deep set eyes longer noses, darker skin, etc. We're as different from them as we are from caucasians. To lump us in the same ethnic group seems ignorant to me.
