Since Indians live on the Indian subcontinent, I'll go with no.

By that comment then Mexicans can call themselves Americans too. But if anyone says that people will assume "USA". (Yes, I know a lot of North Americans/South Americans don't like it when USA Citizens say they're Americans) It doesn't matter sometimes what the "official defenition" is, what matters is what everyone thinks it is (sometimes).

I mean, it's not connected to the US, so they must not be American...

I'm Indian and feel I'm Asian

i don't really take offense, but many do.

oriental is used for inanimate objects that originated from asia. So you're basically calling them something that's less than the lowest form of a living organism. so please, change it to asian

well if he did that it would mess up the poll idiot.

There are some Indian people that look like the stereotypical Asian (Chinese, etc.) people, but they're in the minority.

What would you call Russians?

russians? then it depends on which part of russia the are from...
if russians on Moscow side, just a small chunk of the country is part of a European member.

the large part ( rarely occupied by people ) would fall in Asia....
but that piece of land is just redundant.
too cold to live and high up north

but I think russia is something like Turkey,
they could declare themselves part of UEFA ( europe ) in soccer,

at the same time, still maintain the status of being an Asian Nation
in fact a large part of Turkey is situated on Asian territory

well then there is a question of "a fact" and what people think.

i can be a malaysian... but my race is chinese..
many americans would assume that I am from China..or somewhere else from my appearance,

but the fact is I am a Malaysian.

Uh, people are not considered Oriental, that is reserved for objects. You should really change that before someone thinks you're ignorant.

India is in Asia. People from Asia are Asian.

I don't really get what you mean.
The land mass that now makes up India and Pakistan once floated freely in the ocean as a separate continent, much like Australia. Ages ago it moved north, collided and merged with the much larger land mass we now call Asia.

I consider Filipinos to be asians.
Them are Pacific Islander mang... not asians.

Japan is not part of the Asian continent but they are regarded as Asians... yet its an island surrounded by the pacific. I always thought pacific islanders meant people that came from micronesia and such... i'm confused.

To all of you "They are ASIANS no matter what you think since india is part of the Asia". Who gives a fvck. We all still think of Asians as people from countries such as China, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, etc. Who here refers to people from india as Asans on a daily basis? I don't know anyone who does. I call them Indians. Screw this "TECHNICALLY they are Asian" crap.

Actually, I generally refer to them as people.

Could someone explain why this would be considered a slur?

This is the term I was taught in school (many, many years ago) and is still the definition used by Merriam-Webster.
I always thought the word meant "Eastern".

For those people who are saying Indians are Asians because the country is in the continent Asia, I'm sure the poster meant Asian as in ethnicity.

I'm sure this has been stated already, but there are 3 races: Mongoloids, Negroids, and Caucasoids. I don't consider Indians Mongoloids, as in they're not Asian (loosely speaking) by ethnicity; I consider them only Asian by geography. Likewise, many blacks don't consider Egyptians Africans, but Middle-Eastern (and so Caucasoids).

By the way, when I see people use the word "Oriental," I think they're just clueless. I'm sure they didn't use the term in a condescending way so they use it while thinking it's entirely appropriate...so it's a matter of ignorance more than anything. It's just like when Bush used the term "Pakis" - no harm meant by it, but still makes him look like a complete retard. And I think "Oriental" was originally meant to be racist...it just became so integrated that people think it's normal to use it.
