my point was the odds were NOT against sony in this round.
they have the better technology (meaningless since Beta was superior to VHS, though in the HD world storage is more important now), they had better studios from the start (sony, disney), and they have the PS3 with onboard BD support.

Storage doesn't seem that important. The cost of the media is still apparently quite low, considering that Blade Runner is on 5 discs and still costs $30 or less most places, which is the same or lower than most BD/HD DVD.

uncompressed audio.

Which has an advantage over losslessly compressed audio because... it takes up more space?

Uncompressed 7.1 audio ftw. 3:10 to Yuma has it and it was the best sounding movie I've listened to.

I rarely pay more than $18 for any HDM...not that that will be common anymore :(

which is available on HD DVD. for some reason, they include it less than on BD, but there is nothing about the format that prevents PCM or Master tracks from being included on HD DVD.

Rumor mongering, and nothing more. Paramount has said no such thing, somebody wanting to make headlines brought this up. Paramount did not, and has denied any such intentions. Give it a few months, Warner will switch. HD-DVD is cheaper, and fully suppords HD video specifications.

Blu-Ray is totally the way to go!

Don't you people remember how Betamax and Memory Stick slaughtered their competitors?

Yep, right now dozens of CE's are lining up to produce more HD DVD Players...no wait they aren't... DOH!!!!

The way between the two formats is over, the next war will be between Blu Ray and Digital with digital winning.

I'm going to hazard a guess and assume that Red meant downloads/streaming content.

DOH, I was still asleep when I posted that. You are correct, that's what I meant.

I see absolutely no market for high-def digital downloads for the next 5-10 years. Nobody really has the connection speed to download 30-40gb of files on demand.

There was also the rumor that Warner was going to go exclusive with HD-DVD along with Fox. Fox decided to nitch it and go BR, then Warner got cold feet too.

Honestly - I'm glad I didn't buy that HD-DVD player. I really just want one side to win or the other because I'm sick of this crap. (Even if that means giving money to Sony)

Why? I did buy one. Even if you were a cynical fanboy, I still got a kickbutt upscaling unit, and that's ignoring the fact that my current library of HD DVDs is not going away, and the format isn't done until the fat lady sings.

I really don't care who wins either, aside from my distate for fanboys like jpeyton, but with a whopping $98 invested, big flipping deal even if I zOMGTEHLOOOSE.

Are you sure about that??

Well, it's still about 40 minutes even if you assume in ridiculous fashion that you get the entire 160mbps throughput at all times.

That's next year, what's the mps going to be like in 4 or 5 years? If anything's been constant is that technology has always delivered and there's no reason to believe that the capability to download HD Movies in mere minutes won't possible in the near future.

Won't that require major infrastructure changes? Getting 1600mbps to your provider is one thing... but getting it to netflix or some other random dust particle in the internet cloud is going to require that the entire infrastructure be able to support millions of people sucking data at that speed.

Bingo!

That's also why I take and store all my digital pictures as uncompressed TIFFs. JPGs are 4 noobz! :p
