I'm not taking any chances, I'll be returning my $99 Toshiba HD-DVD to Walmart for a full refund. I'll wait until this stupid format war is over and there is a clear winner. Besides my $59 Toshiba upconverting DVD player does a satisfactory job on our 50" DLP.

Why would you return it? You should be able to rent HD DVDs for quite a while longer. Warner is still releasing HD DVDs until May. That's 5 more months. It's not like you won't get your $99 worth.

Format War = screwed consumers.

By the time there is a "winner" it just won't matter.

I've had a HD-TV for over 6 years with NO HD disc player... F them!!!!

Not sure but Sony must be making major concessions to the picture studios and shilling out millions of dollars to buy their support.

Congrats to them, I'm still not forking over $400+ to them for a PS3 just to watch movies.

Neither am I. I no longer feel the need to be on the bleeding edge of technology. So I'll just wait it out.

When BluRay players hit $100, new movies are consistently $15 and they're readily available through Netflix/BlockBuster then I'll buy one.

By then, we'll be on to SHD-DVD.
:D

There is no way I'll buy one or the other until the format war is over. Looks like HD DVD is losing at this point though.

Anyway, these threads are funny where you see people try to justify their hd dvd purchase by saying it was cheap blah blah blah but we all know it will be sitting in the closet with the hd dvd movies in a few years lol.

And just why exactly would people be putting those HD DVD movies in the closet? The HD movies in both format are equivalent with the same size cases. I even see people have VHS cassette tapes along side their DVD collection.

Oh yes, my point was who has multiple players setup? Most people just have one dvd player and most people wont want to have their hd dvd player hooked up and their blu ray just to play 6 movies they bought back in 2007

Didn't they also choose HD-DVD over BD though?

what odds was sony against?
they had superior technology, more hardware supporters and most importantly more studios backing them.

the only negative was the higher price tag.
unless you're one of those who think it's cool to diss sony.

or are you referring to betamax? if so, the past is not a good indication of the future.

yeah, besides, it's still a good upconverter. use it in your main system and the other one in a secondary.

I know people who have VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and HD DVD or Blu-Ray attached to the same system.

Yea, but as soon as I buy a BD Player (or PS3), its usefulness to me is nada.

I had an issue with HD-DVD long before this announcement came, all the movies I and my wife wanted were BD only. I hadn't realized it at the time I bought the unit, but over the two months I owned it I noticed a trend that HD-DVD wasn't for me.

On a side note, the HD-DVD player has already been sold. It was in perfect condition and will make a good home in someone who likes the movies available for it.

As soon as I get my HDTV I will be in the same boat minus the HD DVD player. I think I might spring for the duel format player if I read about one who's quality is worth it. I havn't done my research in that department yet.

I had a DVD, HD DVD, and VHS all hooked into my receiver set up until last week. I definitely won't be giving up the HD DVD player for a while even if I get a PS3.

Unless you own one of the "fast" HD type players, such as a PS3, watching a regular DVD can be a pain with the wait times between power on and when it becomes ready to play.

yes, but your DVD player doesn't play HD DVD. why not keep that and play/rent HD DVD for years to come?

I heard Warner got $500M....I bet Sony is paying these guys off to save their POS devices that would cost the Corp big time if HD DVD succeded.

Why? My copies of Bourne, MI 1-3, Serenity, Transformers, 300 etc etc will not degrade in visual quality because some corporation switched format support.

At worst I'll have to pick up an extra player to use when/if my A2 dies (or a dual format player if they get cheap). That should carry me through until we're all wirelessly streaming HD movies into our robotic brain implants, just like Microsoft planned.

You're a brave man for even thinking about implanting something into your brain that runs on Microsoft platform.
