I'm really glad now that I waited to purchase a hd player.
Looks like sony is going to get their wish.
Still its not an announcement directly from paramount themselves.

TOKYO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Paramount studios is poised to drop its support of the high-definition DVD (HD DVD) format after Warner Bros studio said it would back the competing Blu-ray format, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The loss of support from Paramount, which is owned by Viacom Inc (VIAb.N: Quote, Profile, Research), would likely deal the final blow to the HD DVD format backed by Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and put an end to the format war, the newspaper said on its Web site.

meh, I got my Toshiba A3 for $100 plus 5 free movies

At worst I got a good upscaling DVD player for $150 less than I paid for my Panasonic S97 almost two years ago.

I'm not taking any chances, I'll be returning my $99 Toshiba HD-DVD to Walmart for a full refund. I'll wait until this stupid format war is over and there is a clear winner. Besides my $59 Toshiba upconverting DVD player does a satisfactory job on our 50" DLP.

i wonder if they are using the same excuse of "bad dvd sales" as their reason for dropping hd-dvd.

I think in these cases, the studios are choosing to do this by themselves. They need to put themselves in the best position to sell movies, and after Warner's departure to blu-ray, Paramount/Dreamworks (are they under the same umbrella, or different?) did not want to be on a sinking ship.

I think of all DVD's sold right now, Warner is responsible for releasing like 15-20% of them, which is a huge number.

I'm still going to wait about 6 months before I purchase a hd player.
Too much conjecture going on right now.

Rumours are the devil. =p

Nobody cares, they just want to keep spreading FUDD. It's sad that it's wrapping up major publications.

It is sad that trusted sources of news are going off rumours, and then running corrections.

Of course no one reads the corrections, bloomberg picked it up from the finacial times, and they have both run correction articles...

I do think this part of the article is interesting .

Paramount, which is owned by Viacom, is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD-DVD camp that would allow it to switch sides in the event of Warner backing Blu-ray, according to people familiar with the situation.

Odd they would have a clause like that. I guess even the movie companies were not sure who to back.

I am glad I waited as well, personally I thought hd-dvd was going to win, it seemed to be the cheaper more universal media. Sony lost the betamax/vhs wars back in the day I was kind of suprised to see them back in it again especially against such high odds.

Anyway, these threads are funny where you see people try to justify their hd dvd purchase by saying it was cheap blah blah blah but we all know it will be sitting in the closet with the hd dvd movies in a few years lol.

there may not even be a clause. Nobody knows, it's all a fricking rumor.

Yea, but remember:

Warner - Dec. 13 2007: "We have made no decision to change our present policy which is to produce in both HD DVD and Blu-ray."

Link

Paramount - Jan. 8 2008: "Paramount's current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format,'' Brenda Ciccone, a spokeswoman for Paramount, said in an e-mail today".

Why? My copies of Bourne, MI 1-3, Serenity, Transformers, 300 etc etc will not degrade in visual quality because some corporation switched format support.

At worst I'll have to pick up an extra player to use when/if my A2 dies (or a dual format player if they get cheap). That should carry me through until we're all wirelessly streaming HD movies into our robotic brain implants, just like Microsoft planned.

Neither am I. I no longer feel the need to be on the bleeding edge of technology. So I'll just wait it out.

When BluRay players hit $100, new movies are consistently $15 and they're readily available through Netflix/BlockBuster then I'll buy one.

And just why exactly would people be putting those HD DVD movies in the closet? The HD movies in both format are equivalent with the same size cases. I even see people have VHS cassette tapes along side their DVD collection.
