I agree, its not serious criticism at all, they are just cartoons... satire. But what if it was a scathing essay on the leaders of islam, written by a muslim sorta like martin luthers deal. The response would be the same death threats and all. Should europe really wait for something like that to happen before it stands up for freedom of speech?

Now is a perfect time to stand up for free speech given that the suppossed blasphemy is in the form of cartoons drawn by non-muslims. If a strong stance is taken on the right to print silly cartoons, then perhaps the door will be open later for the opportunity to actually even have some responsible criticism without fear of every ME leader issuing a fatwa.

Heh, why don't you stand up for free speech in the US first. Maybe major news paper here should start printing cartoons on black taking social handouts and latino jumping over fences on the border. According to you, news paper have the right to print cartoons making fun of entire race/religion in anyway they see fit right? And it is a problem in the US with more black living under poverty than the rest of the population, and more latino being illigal immigrants isn't it? It is all constructive criticism right?

Who cares about generalization, who cares about sterotyping and who cares about respecting the other race and religion right? As long as your group have your fun and get your superiority complex satisfied, it's all well and good right?

WTF are you talking about? Do you ever watch tv in the US? Satire of religion, race, economics, ... everything, goes on in the US. Freedom of speech is still kicking in the US despite attempts to squelch it.

Yeah right, show me one big media that's printing stuff like that and not resulted in somebody getting fired or getting sued.

You are saying comedycentral is a major media? Heh I guess now it all makes sense, people like you getting all your info from comedycentral and south park and thinking it is the real media and the real info. No wonder you don't get why Muslim is pissed about everything.

I don't think anybody has a problem understanding why they are upset. This whole thing is just blown out of proportion by the fact they think they can censor newspapers through with death threats and threats of violence.

If anything it's a case of the truth hurts.

Sure, a tv show owned by Viacom that is seen by millions on cable and in syndication over public air waves is not 'major media'. I figured you would respond with info about a very relevant episode of that show and the reaction it recieved in the us, but I guess wherever you get your info is lacking in its coverage of free speech since you probably don't know what the hell I'm even referring to.

Anyways this is besides the point. The cartoons of muhammed were political in nature not racist. The reason they are offensive is not because of racism or stereotyping, its only because they are considered blasphemous for portraying muhammed. Do islams rules of blasphemy apply to the european infidels? Are they grounds for violating their rights to free speech? No.

blown out of proportion? Let's see how American acts when MAJOR NEWS MEDIAS is free to do publish anything that makes fun of some racial/religious group. Put it into perspective, Jyllands-Posten is the largest news paper in Danmark, it is not anything like comedycentral and what is published should be taken seriuosly.

Like I said, using your own standard, next time a major news paper publish something talking how black takes handout and latino are all illegal immigrants, you can also tell the entire black and latino community that the truth hurt eh? Never mind whatever you think you know doesn't represent even a small minority of the group.

Yes, it's blown out of proportion.

The reason it's blown out of proprtion is because of the threats of violence by the Muslims. Remember the Frito Bandito? The Latinos were mad as hell about it. Were there death threats over that? NO!!

It's up to whoever owns the newspaper to decide what is fit to print and what isn't. Anything else is an infringement on the free press. It's just that simple.

Oh really? Maybe you want to pretend there isn't any tension between the West and Muslim. Maybe you don't want to admit that there is already bad blood between the West and Muslim because of everything that's going on in the world. Maybe if you open your eyes and realize that there is tension and bad blood, and you will understand why the reaction is so violent for this incident.

And free press doesn't guarantee any thing that will stirr up emotion and causing people to kill one another. There is something called responsible journalism and like every other profession, people should abid certain ethical standard.

You have a partial point, but say they print those cartoons you speak of in Denmark. Are the blacks in the US going to have a boycott and send death threats?

We're crossing international borders here. The Muslims of the world are trying to impose there will on what the rest of us can say in out own countries. Clearly this is about freedom of the press on a worldwide scale.

He has no point. The two issues are completely different. Even if that newspaper had only printed a picture of muhammed portrayed in a divine manner like many portraits of jesus, the reaction would still be the same. This is about muslims trying to force their rules of religion onto everyone, not about them being offended by a picture of muhammed.

Article on US Media Reaction

I only link the above article to cite this particular quote that completely nails the issue:

"Until Muslim nations and peoples get the idea that free expression means freedom to offend as well as the necessary correlative -- to be offended -- we have a problem," the editorial, written by Kathleen Parker, said.

I feel that other countries and nations are free to set whatever standards of freedoms of expression they so choose. I could care less about danish media, or french media and what they choose to consider humor. Why is it that people are so easily offended?

this raises the PC bar higher, we can't allow that. Actually I am a bit disturbed that the US media isn't running the comics because of the possibility that the comics could offend people. Like the regular news, and media isn't offensive?! give me a break. IF We walk around on eggshells on this particular NON-ISSUE then that just makes it harder for the media to provide objective coverage when something IMPORTANT needs to be covered.

Ha, nice arguement. when a major news paper offend some racial group, do you go and call those racial group forcing their view and rules on everyone else? When you offend someone, you offend someone. That someone isn't making you to believe what they believe, they just ask you not to make fun of what they believe. The Muslim world didn't ask the Danish news paper to convert to Islam, they just ask them to leave their religion alone. How hard is that to understand? Oh I forgot, you get all your knowlege from comedycentral....right, guess that is too hard for you to understand.

So because there is "bad blood" the west should be extra sensitive not to piss them off?

In the meantime they run around trying to terrorize the whole world because there God and their freedom is more important then mine? Sorry, but I don't think so. They can threaten me all they like. If they don't care about offending me I could care less what they think.

"out of virgins', LMAO! That's funny.

Yes the west should extra sensitive when there is tension. Any responsible journalist won't publish something highly contraversial when there is high tension that can cause problem. Imaging major news paper here poking fun at the black right after LA riot and the Rodney King incident. Would you call it alrite and would you call it responsible and ethical?

And if you think they or "entire muslim" is going around terrorize you and the the whole world because they want you to convert you into their god, you are even less intelligent than I assume you are.

The muslim world is trying to force their religious rule of not portraying muhammed onto the rest of the world. Stop pretending its about how he was drawn or is even remotely equivalent to racist stereotypes. It is all about because he was drawn, not how he was drawn.

Nice try at insulting me, but it would help if you actually knew why I purposefully picked south park as an example. Actually it's kind of ironic that you claim to be so well informed but you are totally clueless as to what I'm referring to.

Some atheists depict Jesus badly all the time in publications (check out Berkeley, CA). These people need to chill out.

Convert me? They can't even make me shut up let alone convert me. ;)

This is NOT about rascism. This is about ideas.

And if you think some political cartoons qualifies as any kind of serious journalism your more gullible then I thought you were.

It's not giving in, it's being respectful since printing the images is insulting to many people. I'm glad that they're blurring it. I'd rather not have media insult people. However, I still support the newspapers in Europe exercising their rights.

its not the fact that it insults people, any chance the US media gets to show a burnign cross somewhere they do it. It is the fact that they are insulting the "wrong" people. And to me, thats giving special consideration to "special" people, thats giving in.

I agree and think thats BS that cnn would censor the images, especially if they are in context to the protests surrounding the images. They should show them and let everyone see what the fuss is about, they can just put one of those "warning graphic footage not suitable for children" type warnings in the beginning :p.

And how is the viewer supposed to decide if the cartoons are worth all this fuss if they don't get a chance to see the material? If they aren't going to show the material in question they shouldn't even have ran the story.

Edit: This just in: Muslims pissed!! Now on to the rest of the news.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, major props go out to the Danish government for not apologizing for the incident:

"Neither the Danish government nor the Danish nation as such can be held responsible for drawings published in a Danish newspaper," Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said after meeting with Muslim envoys in Copenhagen.

"A Danish government can never apologize on behalf of a free and independent newspaper," he said. "This is basically a dispute between some Muslims and a newspaper."

From CNN.com.

One problem with the Islamic religion is that a great many of its adherents believe that their laws trump the laws of the country in which they live. IMO, the principle of the freedoms of speech and expression are far, far more important than the principles advocated by Islamic law.

I definitely do not side with Muslims on this issue.
