So come January 20th I was already planning at all times on carrying my US passport and a copy of my birth certificate showing native born status, but for those of us who are brown and have scary/undesirable last names, will this be enough in the event of an encounter with the deportation police? Or are we looking at a shoot first, ask questions later situation?

Rando sheriff's deputy making bank overtime to rid the country of the browns: "Looks fake to me. Get on the bus, amigo."

what's old is new again....

But this isn’t the first time U.S. citizens have faced the threat of deportation — and its reality. It is estimated that about 2 million people, 60% of whom were American citizens of Mexican descent, were removed to Mexico as part of a Depression-era effort known as repatriation, according to the state of California, though the exact number is unknown and estimates range.

So even the rich get screwed??

Rich NYers hate hate hate the SALT cap. Plenty of these people are also Republicans and contribute to R house candidates in state. There is going to be a lot of haggling/complaining when they get together to assemble a tax bill.

Why does he get these crackpot ideas?
Cheeto thinks he's a great expansionist. If our government / military actually start to listen to him then he would be a danger to all living things. For he does not value the lives of others.

Never forget that he killed an Iranian General for the fun of it.

What is he actually proposing to do, viz-a-viz Greenland?

If taking over Greenland is "an absolute necessity", does that mean he's going to try and militarily conquer it?

Denmark 'selling' Greenland to the US seems about as likely/morally-or-practically-possible as England 'selling' Scotland.

Why does he get these crackpot ideas?
England is so poor.. they might actually want to sell Scotland for cheaper energy bills.. but the Scots will have other ideas like no more Scotch for the Poms!

You know, WW3 starting over the US trying to annex Greenland would be one of the stupidest things I could imagine, so given the current timeline... it's not off the table.

We successfully paid people with shovels and machetes?

This is a rather over simplistic view of what really took place.

Okay, but people with shovels and machetes need engineering guidance, heavy equipment operators and proper leadership. Not to mention the medical care and support to overcome the malaria and other insect born diseases. They didn't just turn a bunch of people loose in the jungle with shovels and machetes and just told them to keep digging until they hit the other side.

Oh, so Americans were the ones with shovels and machetes?

The Americans involved contributed to the success of the canal project. That the discovery that mosquitoes carried disease, a discovery that occurred after the French left and before the Americans took over played a huge role. The Americans implemented measures to combat the mosquitoes. Whether any other country would have spent the resources the Americans did on that piece of the puzzle can't be known. Americans also financed and designed the railroad prior to the French involvement.

None of the above excuses Trump's jingoistic bullshit but Americans should get credit for their contributions just as the Afro-Caribbean workers should also be recognized for their contributions. Trump's blathering should be an embarrassment to all Americans.

Dumb fucking question of the day:

Cant you do "single" payer on a per state level? I get that it's wouldnt be single-single.... But.

I think maybe it came to pass in Europe cause it was adopted gradually. Germany early adopters in like 1880, UK just post WW2 and then it spread through Europe from there.

So I mean, couldnt like California just decide to have a go at it?

(yea I know it's not Trumpism per se but since he wants to repeal all of obamacare etc...).

Also, maybe they could deduct the expenditure on the welfare bill to the red states?

You have to understand this is a republican congress. The fundamental characteristic of a republican congress is to milk the public for the rich. It isn't about being efficient or how to help the rural people. What we will likely see from Trump's administration is how to increase the pocket of the hmo ceo and make everyone pay more.

Yes, it comes up most years now in the legislature. The political debates about how to structure and pay for it have stalled it out each time.

Funny stuff to hear from Cadet Bonespurs, given Mexico is building a trans oceanic railway to undercut the Panama canal. He's probably thinking (using that term very loosely) about China's upcoming war I suspect, naval transit and all.

Hurry up and have a stroke you treasonous shitbag

My sense is it came to pass in Europe because of the fear of socialist revolution. That was certainly what motivated much of Bismark's welfare-state reforms. And it took a world war with the immense disruption that caused to bring it about here.

As there's no longer a serious fear of socialist revolt, it seems there's less incentive for such measures. On the contrary, in fact, the removal of that threat seems to have unleashed the plutocrat class to fight a ruthless top-down class war - hence the out-of-control megalomania of Musk (who seems to think he is entitled to determine the governance of multiple countries - even as he complains about 'unelected bureaucrats')
