The Americans involved contributed to the success of the canal project. That the discovery that mosquitoes carried disease, a discovery that occurred after the French left and before the Americans took over played a huge role. The Americans implemented measures to combat the mosquitoes. Whether any other country would have spent the resources the Americans did on that piece of the puzzle can't be known. Americans also financed and designed the railroad prior to the French involvement.

None of the above excuses Trump's jingoistic bullshit but Americans should get credit for their contributions just as the Afro-Caribbean workers should also be recognized for their contributions. Trump's blathering should be an embarrassment to all Americans.

It wasn't on US land and Americans didn't carry out the actual physical labour (same goes for the French). Whether some credit is due for technical know-how, I don't think anyone ever says you take ownership of something simply by providing that sort of expertise.

Rather than instigating a new era of Imperialism, a project that would be useful is if there was some way of co-operating with Nicaragua to build a second canal, along the route that has been proposed in the past. Surely the constructive way to drive down costs is via competition?

It's mostly about the level of resources applied and better planning/organization. The US applied state power and money to make it happen because we would be far and away the biggest beneficiaries in terms of commerce and military use. The French were just not as motivated as we were which is why it remained a private project and one that they drastically underestimated the difficulty of compared to the Suez.

My sense is it came to pass in Europe because of the fear of socialist revolution. That was certainly what motivated much of Bismark's welfare-state reforms. And it took a world war with the immense disruption that caused to bring it about here.

As there's no longer a serious fear of socialist revolt, it seems there's less incentive for such measures. On the contrary, in fact, the removal of that threat seems to have unleashed the plutocrat class to fight a ruthless top-down class war - hence the out-of-control megalomania of Musk (who seems to think he is entitled to determine the governance of multiple countries - even as he complains about 'unelected bureaucrats')
I think there was a bunch of small catalysts in play at the time, booming economies on the backhand of the war and open safe global trade routes to pay the bill - for one. And that's why I picked California .. 1. The people want it and 2. They got the economics for it(I think) ... And once the ball get rolling...

I'd hope as the 5th largest world economy, California can pull it off

Well i would admit he is a creep and he does force the republican to kill legislation that might harm his corporate desires.

If Russia is the appropriate model, step one would be the oligarchs running amok, but step two would be the despot gaining power while promising to rein those oligarchs in.

I dunno, though, I would imagine it follows a different path in every case. I mean, is Trump Adolf and Musk Krupp, or is Trump Hindenberg and Musk Adolf?

Musk's ego is really something to behold, either way, though. Has there ever been anyone with quite such a level of entitlement?

I was just coming into this thread to post this.
Amazing that poor people actually think that the syphilitic orange menace cares about
whether they get to buy "toilet paper or milk" this week.

"“He is more attuned to the needs of everyone instead of just the rich,” Mosura, 55, said on a recent afternoon. “I think he knows it’s the poor people that got him elected, so I think Trump is going to do more to help us.”"

Some think the orange menace will actually GIVE them more money
"
Steve Tillia, 59, receives $1,600 a month in Social Security disability payments and $300 in food stamps to support himself and his son. Tillia, who said he is unable to work after suffering from mini strokes, still drives around New Castle with a Trump flag anchored on the bumper of his SUV.
Tillia said he’s confident that Trump and GOP leaders will reduce spending by “cutting the fat” out of government — and not slashing benefits.
“It’s not cutting government programs, it’s cutting the amount of people needed to run a program,” he said. “They are cutting staff, which could actually increase the amount of the programs that we get.”"

Healthcare

Dumb fucking question of the day:

Cant you do "single" payer on a per state level? I get that it's wouldnt be single-single.... But.

I think maybe it came to pass in Europe cause it was adopted gradually. Germany early adopters in like 1880, UK just post WW2 and then it spread through Europe from there.

So I mean, couldnt like California just decide to have a go at it?

(yea I know it's not Trumpism per se but since he wants to repeal all of obamacare etc...).

Also, maybe they could deduct the expenditure on the welfare bill to the red states?
Washington state has a commission for it, which is technically progress.

Well to be fair, if history has taught us anything it’s that the ultra wealthy usually really do care about the poor. We’ve seen it time and time again where the ultra wealthy make things better for the average person and not just consolidate their power and increase their wealth through any means possible. That’s what history shows…right? Right?!

/facepalm

Trump, PE for another 4 weeks, is displaying his flair for statesmanship in calling for Canada to be made the 51st US state, and extending his casino chip gathering tools to pull Greenland and the Panama Canal into the clutches of MAGA-land. Saw it on ABC news tonight along with a photo of his orange aggrieved mug.

Uh, how many countries have laws that will prevent his felonious presence going forward?

Just means they'll have to cut down on their budget for Trump memorabilia. And somehow blame "Brandon" for it.

Those people (yeah, I said it) are simply unreachable.
