on edmunds insideline they have it listed as "starting at 25k"

i hope you're right that it's loaded at 25k, otherwise i think it might be a much tougher sell, and that'd be a damn shame :(

Definitely. I'd rather get a base 370Z.

$25-28k vs $21k for a Mustang... Well it would be good for high school kids but I've had enough great handling but slow cars so far in my life.

So would anyone here choose this over a V6 Mustang?

I would, well the Subaru version that is. It's light enough that 200hp should be acceptable if not ideal and it should handle better than the Mustang which matters more to me than strait line performance anyways. I'm not interested in the Toyota version due to the Scion badge.

I don't think the info in that link is accurate. None of the other reports I've seen have mentioned a turbo.

Premium fuel is required for this new turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter horizontally opposed (‘flat’) four-cylinder engine. Termed D-4S, it borrows Toyota direct-injection components and has a perfectly square 86-cm bore and stroke. In U.S. form, expect it to produce just over 200 horsepower and near 155 pound-feet of torque.

The appeal of this car is that its basic and fun to drive, harkening back to the golden age of high performing, good looking, fun to drive, Japanese sports cars. Its not meant to compete with a Mustang... although I'm sure it could on the track with modifications. It also looks awesome... behold:

911 is compact and rwd and 2+2
:colbert:

so are the G37 and mustang
:colbert:

G37 and Mustangs aren't compact. They are 3500+ lb. boats.

The Toyota 86/GT-86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ weighs around 2500 lbs., has a low center of gravity, a high revving engine, and responsive driver controls. Way different...

Actually, if you are rounding numbers, it would be more correct to say around 2700 pounds (2,689 is the official number I saw).

However given the engine's anemic torque numbers (151 lb ft at 6,600 RPM), the car may actually feel like it weighs 3,500 lbs when you try and accelerate. We will see I guess.

Base JDM Toyota 86 weighs 2550. The 2689 you are talking about is a loaded model...

You're right that the torque numbers are low. I blame emissions regulations. Fortunately, everything else about the car is awesome.

they have under 110 cubic feet of combined passenger and cargo room. therefore, compact. the G37 coupe is actually a subcompact being under 99 cubic feet combined.

G37 has the same redline. V6 mustang is only a few hundred RPM back. it's not like these are 5500 rpm loafs. even the boss mustang has the same redline.

According to Edmunds

G37 Power to weight
Curb wt - 3633 lbs
Peak HP - 330

1 hp for every 11.01 lbs

V6 Mustang Coupe
Curb wt - 3453 lbs
Peak HP - 305

1 hp for every 11.32 lbs

FT-86
Assumed curb wt - 2600
Peak HP - 200

1 hp for every 13 lbs

Uh, yeah, I'll take the heavier cars I think :/

But a Mustang beat an M3 around the Nuburububuring!

Over the past years, the RX-8 has been trashed for really not providing enough power. This has even less! This car is fine, but is about 10 years too late.

To be fair, the G37 is a $35k car, the V6 Mustang is $22k and who knows how much the Toyotaru will run. I would more likely compare the Mustang GT against a G37 which is closer to a 8.78:1 weight to power ratio.

Looks like a nice car and I'd pick one up in a heart beat except my next ride is going to be a Subie of some type. I need the wee bit of towing it offers and the interior space. My Civic is a little cramped these days.

The backseat on the GT-86/BRZ is almost non-existent.. it should be compared to a 370Z and not a G37. Dimensions are damn near identical too.

GT-86 / 370Z
Length: 166.7 / 167.2
Width: 69.9 / 72.6
Height: 51.2 / 51.8
Wheelbase: 101.2 / 100.4
Weight: 2600? / 3291
HP: 200@7k / 332@7k
TQ: 151@6.6k / 270@5.2k

Agree on that point. The car looks a lot to me like the Z as well. I just wish that the car would compete closer in power to the Z.
