lol, I'm a Terran player but I've always liked Zerg. So I started playing some games against normal AI and I'm terrible, I don't know how to do anything but spam zerglings, really, I'm awful but apparently that's more than enough to beat the AI. Today I played 2 2v2 games as Zerg and won them both, again with my zergling startegy lol. If I keep winning like this I'll never learn how to play Zerg.

Wow, this is frustrating. I haven't been able to play since last week and apparently that much time degrades execution of very basic things.
This happens to me as well. I've been playing mostly challenges and SP achievements for the last week and yesterday when I played a 1v1 I made too many n00b mistakes to count.

I've seen a Ling Rush work well against people that aren't planning on rushing themselves. If they waste time teching up too far or not walling off, they'll never be able to put up a fight.

I recall doing a 3v3 fight where we pretty much took out one of the opponents by starting with a ling rush, and then I brought in a small MM force to help take him down.

If only we could be so ballsy in all of our matches :p.

Yea I do this in 3v3-4v4 games, but instead of just zerglings it's mostly banelings, because they are so damn fun to use. It's so great watching an entire army of marines (strangely enough a ton of people just spam marines in 3v3+) melt into a puddle.

I play Terran 1v1 but might switch to zerg just because it's so hectic and I seem to enjoy the chaos. That I kinda like the whole queen/larva mechanic.

Again I say it...If you are just going to QUIT at the first sign that you might be losing, then play 1v1 or find another game to play. When you're playing 2v2/3v3/4v4 if you leave you're dragging everyone on your team down with you I'm tired of being drug down by people with the attention spans of kindergartners. I know I'm probably not even in the "good" player catagory , but even if I'm nearly wiped out I stay in because every building/unit counts. Pretty sad when I'm consistently the last player and have to rebuild teammates on my own. Hard to want to just quit when they leave and have been sitting on 3000+ mins and wondering why they are losing. GRRR. /end rant

On a positive note I just got a new 27" monitor and WOW I'm in heaven!

Heh, after reading this I graduated from zerglings to banelings and yeah it's very fun :awe:

Hope to learn to play one day though D:

Thing I've always seen is that Banelings definitely require a bit of strategy though... usually just tossing them at a crowd doesn't do well if they can be overpowered... although, I guess it depends on how much damage is needed :p.

I prefer using Banelings with a diversion... but I like how they roll like an armadillo :p.

yea banelings are best when you can flank the opponents army. I like getting a group in front and behind their army and they usually end up running right into the banelings coming from the other side. Or if you can get fungal growth on a group of marines and just run the banelings at them since they can't move.

Also baneling drops are fun, load a bunch of overlords with banelings, fly in large group of overlords (empty ones as well) during the middle of a fight and start dropping green balls of death in the middle of their MMM ball.

After playing all the races, I think I like the zerg playstyle the best. I do notice they are reliant on gas and macro compared to the other races and their units are weak. But I love their general speed and ability to control the map.

Also, the ability to generate higher tier units from just a single structure is awesome as well.

uhhh... terran is just as dependent on gas if not more.
so is toss if you go higher level units. so the same could be said about all races.

the ability to spawn all units from hatchery is not what makes them great. it's their ability to spawn SO MANY freaking units so freaking quickly that really makes them the best at macro.

I've tried zerg vs the AI and I just keep forgetting to keep up with the queen's ability for larvae. It's weird having hydras as tier2. Do people build multiple queens per base? Also is it unusual to have 2 hives at one base? That's how I used to increase production in SC.

I'm not a zerg main, but my friend is - I believe he said one queen, one hatch per base is enough for continuous production if you continually inject larvae. injecting larvae is the absolute key to playing zerg - its their macro ability, and it's very very powerful in the hands of zerg.

terran question. how do you pull an SCV in the middle of constructing a building away without canceling the build?

There's an option to halt production, but I forget the hotkey for it. If you click on the building being produced, it should show the button... I believe it's right above the option to cancel it.

EDIT:

I'd probably disagree... Terrans can usually work really well with just minerals, because Marines are a fairly versatile mineral-only unit. If you need to defeat a lot of light armor ground units, you have the mineral-only Hellion to use. Unfortunately, you can't really rely on those units if your opponent starts making Ultralisks, Colossi or Siege Tanks :p.

you will never win a game against a semi-decent player with just marines and helions. your point is moot.

They can make up a significant portion of your arsenal, though.

As a Terran player, I do think that Terran is probably the gas-lightest race. Although there are certainly times when I'm starving for it, depending on what I do.

no his point is valid.

Terran's require the least gas to field a strong army. Vikings are cheap on gas, Marines cost no gas, Hellions, no gas.

You can field a very strong army with little gas as Terran. This is why 1 base Terran is so effective, it is also commonly accepted that Zerg require the most gas. Muta/corruptors 100 gas, upgrade to broodlords? 150 more gas. Hydra?/50gas.

Zerg buildings also require a large amount of gas.

I think the only unit other than a zergling that doesn't require gas is a queen, which is not a combat unit. And overlords, but again not a combat unit.

You need at least 1 queen per hatchery to maintain larva production. If you do it right then no queen will have more than 25 energy at any point in the game.

You won't do it right. Pretty much every player in the world is screwing this up right now. Even the professional players forget to inject occasionally, they just forget less often than amateurs. Over the next few years as the game matures I'd imagine the level of play on the professional level is going to get much closer to optimal. In 5 years I bet in every professional Zerg game no queen will have more than 30 energy, ever.

Some players build more queens to help with early defense (air in particular since spire is slow to build and hydras are expensive), or also to use them to spread creep across the map quicker. Many players build 1 extra queen to help with early pressure and then re-purpose it to spread creep.

In SC1 you had to build extra hatcheries in order to have enough larva, but in SC2 with the queen injection mechanic 1 hatchery per base is usually sufficient. Some players build an extra hatchery because they know their queen macro is going to be less than optimal and they want something extra to inject to. You also might have to build another hatchery in your base if you 1 base for too long.

Continually pumping drones you'll end up with excess minerals from 1 base VERY SOON in the early game. You will literally have nothing to spend it on because you'll be limited by larva. This is the best time to expand if you already haven't but if you can't do it safely then throwing down another hatch in your base is better than it doing nothing.

A small request:

Please PLEASE do not quit like a little bitch when the first wave crosses into your field of view. Especially in a 2vs2 which pretty much guarantees your buddy is fucked.

Also, dont assume he's a moron just cuz he's using the default avatar. Some guys spend so much time actually playing the damn game they dont discover all the cool shit like custom portraits.

Oh man I love people that grasp onto the stupidest shit to try and judge their opponent/teamate. Something that has absolutely no correlation to a persons ability. Of course then you can start using this to your advantage, keep the default avatar just to make it look like you're a n00b.

If I was skilled enough to get into gold league or higher, I'd ask shit like, "I cant harvest any gas, it says I need to build a refinery. Whats that?"

Or, "What are supply depots?"
