I can't even get him in my sight before he shoots her. I can see her lying on the ground, and I can see the tip of the barrel of his gun just before he shoots her.
I dont think I've done that mission yet, but when your outside of a door before you actually get to the door use RB to use cover along the wall. You might be able to use dead eye more effectively that way?
Glad to see I'm not the only one shooting / wanting to shoot the brown horse in the face after the golden one dies.
I finished the main story although I'm only around 80% complete with everything.
Spoilers on game ending:
I'm not sure I like how they ended the game either. They didn't really give any reason for the lawmen coming for Marston, all the sudden there was an army after him though. I went from herding cattle and mustangs to fighting off 50 men and I didn't know why...wish there'd been a better buildup. They also never elaborated on the mysterious guy in black who "knew John" and was bulletproof...
Finally, Jack avenging you was very cliche...yet still satisfying.
Overall though I thoroughly enjoyed the SP portion of the game. I didn't master any of my hunting/gathering challenges (I got behind on the plants and never was in the right area to catch up) and I think I missed out on one stranger mission. Didn't play very many of the mini-games (although I discovered that arm wrestling is by far the easiest...) and I never did catch my Hungarian Halfbreed horse. Still...it was a fun experience.
I'm debating starting over and playing the game as a bad guy although I don't know if I have the drive to do it ATM. As it is though MP doesn't have much pull for me, they need to nerf the heck out of Dead Eye and add some meat to it and it'd be more interesting. I may sell the game off now and repurchase it when there's more DLC and I need a refresh (probably as little as 3 months from now), although considering I only paid $11 out of pocket it may not be worth it...
I plan on completing as much as I can before I finish the main game. I'm assuming the small northeast chunk of the map is where the game ends, so how long or how many missions once you unlock that does it take before it's over?

I felt the exact same way. I kept thinking I must've missed a cutscene or something because I don't understand why all of a sudden the army would be after to kill you. I understood that Marston didn't have the best relationship to the feds, but he did ultimately fulfill his end of the bargain. Never did it seem that the feds were going to kill him, until that final scene. Overall the ending was done poorly. It should've ended when you went back home. You had this climax, then you're backing fucking herding again, and then you get attacked by the army? Wtf?
Overall though, SP was pretty fun, but since MP isn't all that exciting, I'm pretty much done with this game until I get an itch to play it again a year later.

You've got a good while. You can complete all the missions in Blackwater and on the ranch you can complete all the "A" and "U" missions (I'll label them as that to not spoil anything) and two of the "J" missions.
The absolute final mission of the game is actually a stranger mission and even when it's over you can still go and treasure hunt, clear gang hideouts, do hunter challenges, complete other stranger missions, etc.

Yeah, I agree. I'll definitely play it again, I just need some time off...back to MW2 I go! (and I've got Brutal Legend, Lost Planet, and NFS: Most Wanted to play as well).
Just starting clearing out gang hideouts. Even alone they're not that difficult and even if you die you respawn pretty close with not much of a penalty.
Can anyone tell me, without spoilers I hope (except I know the ending already...) how far I have to go into the game before the Mexican infested area and the northern place is unlocked?

Are you just plowing through the story or are you doing side missions and such too? Seems to me that it may get boring just plowing through the main missions without doing anything else. I think the variety is good enough as the stranger missions usually vary by quite a bit, challenges are fairly different at each level, etc... but the main story doesn't change things up too much.
It's a good game but I am just starting to bore of it. I am not doing too many side missions, I have put well over 10 hours into it. I just did the mission
where you go to the rebel compound in Mexico and burn down the buildings
Hate to say it but I'm sorta with you. I'm not realyl "bored" but I've done all I wanted to thus far, until MP becomes more interesting I'll put this on the shelf.
