So Bobby Cox was honored on Capitol Hill and something about that cake seems a bit off...

No Cake Love for Bobby Cox on Capitol Hill

When the GREAT Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame third baseman Eddie Mathews retired from baseball in 1968, he ranked 7th in all time home runs with 512.

The Braves management, in gratitude, sent him some sort of commemorative plaque, trophy, whatever, on which they called him Edward Mathews.

They damn well ought to have, in 1999 he was ranked as the 63rd best player of ALL TIME by The Sporting News.

Trouble is, his first name was Edwin, not Edward.

This Rockies/Phillies game is the best game I've watched this season.. GREAT game!

Better than the one where they survived the awesome Mr. Tim Lincecum by tying it up with two outs in the ninth off a Giants reliever on a three run, bases loaded triple by Jason Werth that just barely landed fair, then won it all in the tenth?

I don't THINK so! :D

That was one of the two games I've missed this season. :( :(

Former MLB pitcher, Jose Lima died this morning of a massive heart attack. Only 37 and he sure was a character. rip Lima Time

In baseball news the Reds, Padres and Dodgers are playing well. and Dice-K was a few outs away from a no hitter. How about those Tampa Bay Rays? They are playing superb baseball. I hope they are getting some fan support at the stadium.

I hope the Mets can pull out a victory today against the Yanks but boy is that bullpen overworked. Happy to see Bay and Wright with some offense but it sure would be nice if Bay can hit a homer. lol Only 1 for Bay so far.

And the Cubs sign.....

Bob Howry?!?!?!?!?

Who hasn't gotten anyone out in how long?

Pinella has lost it. He needs to retire after this season.

With the Red Sox in Tampa for 3 games, they'll get the Boston fans for sure. :D

If it wasn't for Myers' gem on Friday, we probably would be on a 9 game winning streak.

And about Lima, the stats weren't great, but it sounds like the man was:

Lima, who often referred to his outings as "Lima Time," was 89-102 in 13 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.

He was selected to the All-Star Game with Houston in 1999, when he won a career-high 21 games.
...
Dodger owner Frank McCourt released a statement in which he fondly recalled Lima's singing of the national anthem before a home game in 2004, during his one season with the Dodgers.

"We are shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Jose Lima," McCourt said in the release. "Though he was taken from us way too soon, he truly lived his life to the fullest and his personality was simply unforgettable. He had the ability to light up a room and that's exactly what he did every time I saw him."

In the 2004 National League Division Series, Lima pitched a five-hit shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals in front of a sell-out crowd at Dodger Stadium. It was the Dodgers first postseason win since Game 5 of the 1988 World Series.

Hell of a job by the Mets against the Yanks and Phils during the short homestand. I'm especially pleased with Mike Pelfrey this season and I have nothing but total confidence that he'll get the job done in each of his starts. As great as the Mets play at home its the total opposite on the road. They are just dreadful on the road so hopefully they'll do better this time on the road against the Brew Crew this weekend.

Phils in the midst of a run of historically EPIC suckage. First time they've been shut out 3 straight times in 27 years.

Moreover, they have been shut out in 4 of their last 5 games, for the first time in 36 years, and have not scored in 46 of their last 47 innings!

Hell, their 1993 team (Nails, Krukker, Darren Dalton, Wild Thing -- still one of my all time fave teams) wasn't shut out even ONCE all year until after they'd clinched the pennant and played all the scrubs in one of the last couple of games.

There is no joy in Mudville.

The Phillies are have been good these last few years, but for most of their long history they have been bad . . . really, really bad!

In fact, they have lost more games than any other major professional sports team in the entire history of our country!

This came to light a couple of years ago when they officially went over 10,000 loses for their history.

Think about that for a second. One way to lose over 10,000 games is to lose 100 games each and every year for 100 years.

Historically, they have been THAT bad.

They lost today 9-3 and fell out of first place. But, their prior 8 games, they have been shut out 5 times, including 4 of 5 in one part of that stretch.

To give you an idea of how rare this is, the Phillies, the losingist franchise ever, hadn't been shut out in 5 out of any 8 games prior to yesterday since 1918!

Sigh.

Aside from the perfect game, the last week or two of Phillies baseball has just been brutal. I can't even begin to say how disappointed I am that we dropped out of first place in the NL East. Yes, we've had a number of injuries all season - but there's no excuse for this.

D Lee is done.

I saw him for the first time in a while today. His swing is gone.

It's too slow to catch up with good pitches.

My god the Mets are just pathetic on the road. They have the worst road record in the majors and one of the best home records as well. Its like two different teams! They are getting RAPED by the Padres of all teams. LOL What a joke.

btw..how 'bout Ubaldo Jimenez? Dude has been awesome.

Saw a Yanks game at Fenway for the first time. Massive lols @ blowout.

Saw the Twins at The Stadium. A-Rod grand slam, massive lols induced.

Another A-Rod grand slam yesterday. Our youngsters are AMAZING, good to see A-Rod knockin em down though.

I miss Aceves. He's the best.

Ken Griffey Jr is now a retired man as decided to call it a career today. Wonderful player in Seattle with that sweet swing. A damn shame he was injured so much during his days with the Reds. He should be expecting a ticket to cooperstown in his mailbox in 5 years.

Ken Griffey Jr. announced his retirement Wednesday through a press release.

The future Hall of Famer didn't report to Safeco Field for Wednesday's game against the Twins. He's logged only seven at-bats since May 18 and no longer felt like a contributing member of the club. Junior finished with 630 homers, fifth all-time. He leaves the game as one of the best to never win a title, but also as one of the few sluggers of his era to dodge steroid speculation. There's little doubt that he will be a unanimous Hall of Famer on the first ballot.
