Ugh. Reports say Yzerman is retiring today.

Cheers to one of the greatest sportsmen I've ever seen play any sport.
Wow, considering he had a pretty damn good season last year, I thought he might come back for one more year.

One of the greatest captains in all of pro sports, bar none. If you don't love Stevie Y, you don't love hockey! One of the all-time greats!!!

He wants to play, he just doesn't think his knee can hold up another season. Its amazing he came back at all after the surgery he had in 2002. His doctors said most people are happy to be able to walk normally again after that kind of surgury. He played hockey on it.

Here's to a good upcoming season, what about the visor rule discussions in the AHL?????? They are slowly tring to take the fighting out of Hockey....... 🙁
The visor rule is necessary. It will help to keep injuries down, and I don't see why more players wouldn't wear it. I know they argue it makes seeing the puck harder, but there are no bars, and they can see right down to their feet without any obstructions. As an owner I think I would require my players to wear visors, if I'm going to pay you millions of dollars I want you as well protected as possible. From a business stand point this makes perfect sense, get the most play time out of your players and help to minimize injuries.
This all started when a Portland Pirate took an innocent clear to the eye. His eye is gone, and his career is over, a visor would have prevented, or at least helped. He was 20 years old, first season in the AHL, and his career in hockey is now gone. Imagine if that was a shot, NOT just a clear, we are lucky this hasn't happened sooner.

I don't think fighting will be reduced. When players want to scrap they toss their gloves, now they just have to toss that helmet too. Fights still break out in Juniors and they are requred to wear visors. Overall I think mandatory visors should have happened a while ago, but better late than never.

Poor Smith, career over, but at least Anaheim did the honorable thing and agreed to pay his full contract.

And of course w00t w00t hockey 😀

Brendan Shanahan is slow as mud, couldn't score in the playoffs because of this.

While I think that's not quite accurate, having a veteran guy like Shanny on a team that has lots of young guys who are developing is a good thing IMO.

If that's your only knock on Shanny I can accept that. He's got leadership, tons of playoff experience, and he's tough as nails. Just what the B's younger players need to see on a day-to-day basis.

A one or two year deal at 1.75 - 2 million per would be a good deal.

One of the NHL's classiest men ever! Instant HOF'er.

Cheers Stevie Y. Thanks for the memories.

The Red Wing's will look weird without Yzerman on the ice. I am still in shock that its over. I will miss you Mr. Yzerman.

Good god the Bruin's are over paying the people they are signing.

They really have no choice. They have developed a reputation around the league they are trying to change. They want Boston to be a place people want to come play, and not have a reputation of nickel and diming every contract.

Do you really think if they didn't spend the money on Chara and Savard no one else would have? I bet both those guys would have gotten the same or close anywhere they went...

Pronger was just traded to anaheim for lupul, a non-roster player and several draft picks.

"Joffrey Lupul, top prospect Ladislav Smid, Anaheim's first-round choice in 2007, a conditional first-round pick and Anaheim's second-round pick in 2008"

I'm glad he went to a werstern conf. team.

Ditto on SteveY's retirement. I though he would come back for another season. 🙁

I can't speak for NHL players but I've tried to wear a visor before. It sucks. After every shift, you are wiping it off because it fogs up. It is bothersome, I don't know how some guys can wear one. I played with a 1/2 cage for a while, and now I just wear a full caged helmet because even playing pickup a couple times a week, too many accidents happen. I enjoy playing with a cage, it makes me more fearless, especially going into the corners and blocking shots in tournament games. Also, if you notice in the OHL and other junior leagues where a lot of the guys wear visors, they end up just pushing them up over the level of their eyes anyway. Visors blow, no offence to those that like them.

I'd pay him more. 40 goals last year. Also, his toughness is amazing. I think Shanny has a few years left in the tank. He might not be speedy, but was he ever? Park him in the crease or the faceoff circle on the PP and he's still got a deadly shot. He can hit, and he can still scrap. Intangibles - too many to list.

Oh yeah - and about the Pronger trade.... not impressed.

Glad that Lupul is coming home to Edmonton - but for the record he was one of my most hated players on Anaheim.

The rest of the crop - well - Smid - prospects. Nothing more. Prospects, picks, and Lupul.

Suddenly Kevin Lowe is rebuilding 😕

Thanks Pronger, you fvcking tool. Hopefully your wife can get her triple-mocha cinnamon flaked latte and drive her convertible to the doggy wash to wash up her little pooch, right after she takes your balls out of her purse. Sh1t. The least K.Lowe could have done was trade him to an EASTERN team.

Maybe I was chanelling Jeremy Jacobs and Harry Sinden.

Prolly just my subconscious, deep seated hate for everything Shanahan ever since he boned us in Hartford. We had the partial season ticket package at the CC for years. My daughter got a Shanny sweater when they did the deal that sent Pronger to the Blues. She cried when Shanny left. She cried when The Whale left.

OK... 2.5 million per on a two year deal with performance clauses. Give him the "C" on day one.

Hows that?

Transactions for the day...

Team Monday, July 03, 2006

Atlanta - Signed forwards Steve Rucchin and Glen Metropolit.

Buffalo - Signed defenseman Teppo Numminen to a one-year contract.

Dallas - Signed goaltender Mike Smith to a one-year contract.

NY Rangers - Signed defenseman Aaron Ward.

Ottawa - Signed forward Jason Spezza to a multi-year contract.

Pittsburgh - Named Andre Savard assistant coach; signed defenseman Mark Eaton to a two-year contract.

San Jose - Signed forwards Mike Grier and Curtis Brown.

St. Louis - Signed forward Dan Hinote to a multi-year contract.

I've been surprised how many key guys they have let walk. Are they that close to the cap? They may not have been able to sign all of their FA's, but it seems like theywould have tried to keep as many as possible...

I would never give a player the C in his first year with the club, but that's just me. 2.5... sho nuff! 😛

On any other team I'd agree with ya, but this is the Ruins we're talkin' aboot. Besides PJ Axelsson, the B's are pretty damb thin in Captain material.

If management were to give out the "C" instead of having the locker room decide, I would hope the rest of the team would respect Shanahan's career accomplishments enough to buy in on it.

Nice carrot to dangle for Shanny to sign on the dotted line...

I'm totally unimpressed with Buffalo's off season moves thus far.

You should realize now that Buffalo doesn't throw money around. They matched San Jose's offer to Grier, but Grier decided not to stay. I'm ecstatic we resigned Numminen. Although he's an aging defenseman coming off heart surgery, he was the heart and leader of the defense during the playoffs. The record when he played and didn't speaks for itself.

I do believe Buffalo will make a decent trade with Biron. Possibly to Detroit?

One thing I am sure of is that, whether it be from a Biron deal or from free agent signing, I'm sure Buffalo will pick up a top 4 d-man now that McKee has gone.
