I played the game a little more (2 more hours on top of the 1 hour from the day before)over the weekend. I've gotta say that, so far, I'm not that impressed overall. Some notes:

...Stuff

Aside from the Zeros you mentioned about the protagonist, none of those reasons really bother me at all. In fact, a lot of the reasons people have been mentioning as an annoyance actually attract me more. I really dislike the Mass Effect/KOTOR style RPG and am much more about this style. That plus I hear that the Zeros start to get filled in much better as the game progresses much like some of the characters in previous final fantasy games did (Cloud and Squall come to mind).

I love the two rings idea and I also really like how the immortals can learn skills by fighting with other characters. Voice acting is nice, but scrolling text is still very acceptable to me as long as most cut scenes (dream sequences excluded) involve voice acting. I am also all about turn based RPGs.

I guess in the end this style of RPG is for some people while the Mass Effect style is for others. Both styles can be developed very poorly as well as become a work of art....assuming the game is your style. 😉

How could I be extremely excited for this game if I didnt enjoy turn-based RPGs? In this very thread I stated that very excitment. I actually loved Blue Dragon (another turn-based game from the same studio)--but I guess ME had more of an impact on me than I thought (played it after BD). I love turn-based RPGs, so that isnt the issue. It's the sum of it's parts (overall and so far) that is not doing much for me. It's just boring and uninteresting at this point. Will it get better? I hope so. Can it get better and my impressions change? Absolutely!

Again, I'm only about 3 hours into the game and just got to the skill system tutorial that you talked about. It sounds interesting so I'm looking forward to seeing how this will effect the game.

What I said in bold there was meant to be taken more as a generalization rather than an absolute. It wasn't directed towards you specifically.

This game is perfect for old school RPG fans who grew up on Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy on the NES and SNES. If you aren't one of those people, you might not like it.

I spent some more time with the game last night, and I have to say that it is now starting to pulling me in to the point where I care about whats going to happen next. I still find the Kaim (lead protagonist) to be an emotionlist, boring twit--but I do generally find the others interesting. I *really* like Jensen who is the comedy relief supporting character. He's adding that balance that is needed in all the seriousness that takes place in this game.

But man is this game hard at times. It is definitely no slouch when it comes to challenge--and that's nice. It took me 7 tries to kill the very first boss. I actually had to go back and grind up my guys to the next level (only took about 15 mins), and then approach the boss once more. I did finally kill him, but I was shocked at the level of difficulty (and at the same time releived to find that the monsters dont scale to your level).

Also--The music score is really quite amazing.

Amen brother.

I hate level scaling. It kills the sense of accomplishment.

I love the run function and the way your characters XP balances out so that you dont have characters who are higher then others.

i didnt find the first boss terribly hard. beat him on the first try, i did have one character die once and another die twice though. i was lvl 14 i believe.

I was level 13 when I hit him. Once I got to lev 14, he was pretty standard difficulty. Also, I switched up my formation and put Seth in back with Jensen and left Kaim up front to tank.

Now is your level so important because you have very little control over your stats otherwise or does the game utilize the rings effectively enough to make it feel like you can make flexible decisions?

Also, I have heard mixed talk about weapons an armor. Do we get different weapons and armor or not?

It's definitely a tough game. I got game over on the 2nd boss, the first time I tried.

Most of the strategy in the game is based on the skills and rings you equip, along with your formation and the ability to keep up GC.

You get different weapons, rings, and accessories. There is no concept of armor.

Not sure about armor, but I did manage to buy new weapons and rings for my guys last night.

When you do gain a level, what happens? Do your stats just increase automatically or is there more to it?

There is an XP bar located in a status windows for your character. This status window is shown for each character after a fight concludes with the loot you've aquired, SP (XP), gold, and your results. When you gain a level, it happens here as it ticks up and it all happen automatically.

edit - Can we get this thread's title changed to the official LO thread?

Alright, I think I only have one last question here since I am most likely purchasing a copy of it tomorrow. What I want to know is more detail regarding the skills you learn as an immortal and especially the restrictions. I know you learn them by fighting with your mortal comrades, but is there a limit to what skills an immortal can learn or how many they can learn or how many can be equipped/used during an encounter with the enemy?

Fill me in 🙂

You can learn everything. You can only equip a limited amount at once. You start with 3 slots and get slot seeds that add one slot per seed when you use them on a character. Each immortal can get up to 15 slots.

Buy it at Costco. It's < $52.

No membership 🙁

I will check BJs though.

I'm drawn in to this game the more I play it. I had my second boss battle last night and this time I only died once. 😛

I know that I'm in to this game because, as I sit here at work, I want to be home playing it.

BTw, Xavier434, did you pick the game up yet?

I am leaving in about 30 min to pick it up. I won't be able to play it until later tonight though.

Cool--let us know what your first impression is. BTW, I find Jensen to be incredibily hilarious.

In the first couple hours of playing I totally noticed the lack of the wild and crazy character that is usually found in and defines a JRPG. It all seemed too serious and americanized, until we meet the lecherous funny guy, now all is right with the universe 🙂

The frequency of the cut-scenes is starting to get annoying.

That doesnt change, atleast is hasnt since hitting disk 2. They are long sometimes too, but hey, atleast they're all skipable if one wishes.
