If that remains true for the whole game then I will reconsider getting it. I was ok with XII's cut scenes but I didn't like the character development or the story so much. I will wait a little longer to see what people are saying after around 15-25 hours of playing it. Is there a demo out on XBL?

Maybe I'll have to actually play this then . It's sitting on my shelf and since I hadn't heard the news about the wonderful packaging, I had quite an odd look on my face when I opened the case. I stared at that wonderful paper disc holder in bewilderment for at least a good minute wondering if that was an "extra" thing or not 😛.

Anyone have any information on the extra thing you got when you preodered from EB/GS? It's supposed to be an extra level and an extra weapon. Kind of wondering where they come into play.

Ugh.

My copy was suppose to arrive yesterday and it didnt. Well, even if it did arrive yesterday I wouldnt have had time to play it (V-day and all).

I'm just REALLY looking forward to sinking my teeth into this game. I've been itching for a solid, traditional Final Fantasy type RPG for ages. Even before Blue Dragon (which I played, beat and loved), but I still have a craving.

I've heard really good things from several people whos opinions are usually similar to mine in gaming. It so traditional in some ways, though, it might urk people. The lead protagonist is immortal, sad, lonely--and has AMNESIA! Not terribily original, but hey--how often do we play games for the stroy. 😛

Well, the only Final Fantasy game that what you mentioned reminds me of is Final Fantasy VI. I do wish though that the game had armor and weapons rather than just rings (this going off of what I've read about the game). I tend to like equipment but not an excessive amount. I think FFVI had it right with the amount of equipment.

I was generalizing about the amnesia and plots--not just the FF series. But, really, it doesnt matter because I'm ready to embrace his memory loss. 🙂

Yea, I heard about the lack of armor and weapons and I'm the same as you--I like to equip new things and watch it change the look of my guy. Ah well....

I eagerly await the day that a developer breaks from convention and provides us a hero that has the lifespan of a fruit fly, is happy, popular, and possesses all his mental faculties. 😉

For those who have played/read about this game, what does it do to replace/fulfill the desire for getting upgradeable weapons and armor?

Hahaha!

Ok, I was just over at GameLife and there is an article on Street Fighter IVs new character, Abel. This is so awesome, check out story:

ABEL
With no memory of his past, this young man has no choice but
to move forward, using any clue he can get his hands on to
rout out what may be left of Shadaloo. His fighting style
represents a mix of multiple martial arts. Though he appears
gruff and unfriendly on the surface, he is not the misanthrope
he seems to be. His serious and polite nature is easy to
misinterpret as indifference, but these still waters run deep
indeed.

Well, if this is putting you off, I can tell you the discs I received about a week and a half ago were final, retail discs, not "review code" for a debug unit, and the average load time for a battle is between 12-16 seconds. Which is totally bearable.

Holy load times batman! 12-16 seconds for every battle? No thanks.

Can anyone else confirm this? That seems very excessive compared to most 360 game load times...

12-16 seconds for load + intro sequence (the standard view the characters, then the enemies, then the environment) + starting the fight maybe. Definitely not to load the battle screen.

Ok, I was envisioning 12-16 seconds of a black screen with at most some animation in he corner. What you describe is much more tolerable.

Yerp. Lost Odyssey doesn't really have any problems that I've noticed. I think the mediocre reviews are because a) they got a dev version, which means longer load times/optimization problems and b) it's not Mass Effect. It's an excellent JRPG as far as I can tell. (I hated Blue Dragon btw. The voice acting made me cringe.) Final Fantasy clone? Definitely. But that's like complaining that sleeping with a hot chick that looks like Jennifer Garner is bad because it isn't Jennifer Garner. 🙂 The important parts are all there and it's a great experience IF YOU WANT A TURN BASED JRPG. If you want Mass Effect, go play Mass Effect.

Ill have to check this one out.

I actually thought Blue Dragon was decent, but I lost interest with it shortly after I got the airship.

I just cant bring myself to grind grind grind levels anymore.. Too much EQ I guess.

To address the issues most people have brought up:
- Load time is no big deal. The load time into battles is usually a few seconds and it isn't just a blank screen. Think Final Fantasy battle intros.
- Cutscenes are neither every 5 minutes or ridiculously long.
- The game is harder than your normal American RPG, but most people forget that 4 of the 9 playable characters are immortal.

That's what I was waiting to hear. I really have been sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for another turn based random battle Final Fanstasy like game. Now that I am getting word that the cut scenes are not as excessive as I was lead to believe I will be getting this game and I am sure I will love it. 🙂

Thanks for the posts guys.

I played the game for about an hour--the load times are hardly 12-15 seconds. I counted 4 seconds so far as the longest wait for a battle.

I'm really excited at this point. I plan to pick this game up on Friday. It is taking a lot of willpower not to read any spoilers off of other websites 😀

I played the game a little more (2 more hours on top of the 1 hour from the day before)over the weekend. I've gotta say that, so far, I'm not that impressed overall. Some notes:

- The game, at times, looks fantastic and other times a little blah and boring.

- The framerate seems fine during actual gameplay, but drops noticabily to a slight studder at times during some in-game cutscenes. Odd.

- During the battle sequences, there is an added sort of mini-game. It's a system that (so far, only the lead protagonist can use) consists of two rings, a small one that focuses on the bad guy and a larger one that's sort of around it, that you must overlap. The mechanics work specifically like this: after you select what action you're going to take during your turn in battle, you wil have the opportunity to squeeze the right trigger as you charge in and the larger ring shrinks closer to the smaller rings size. You have to let go of the trigger once the they overlap. If you score (in overlapping well), you get a bonus in damage depending on how well you did, infact, score. It's simple and fun enough that I found it a fun little game to play during battle.

- The lead protagonist is boring. Zero emotion. Zero memory of his past. Zero personality. I have zero interest in him.

- The load times are totally fine in all areas.

- After expereincing Mass Effects conversational system and loving it, it seems so antiquated to walk up to people and press a button to initiate a (text only) dialog system with nothing to say in rebuttle. It was just.....a little dull. The only time there is any voice acting applied is during cutescenes. But, I guess I should have braced myself for more of the same since last generation or even Blue Dragon? I'm sure I'll get use to it.

- As you walk through the general area of the city (and I assume other parts of the game), there are certain events that will spawn the recall of lost memories for Kaim (protagonist). You will then be wisked away to a cutescene of colorful backgrounds and text filled with random (and sort of) cool transitions of.........words. Lots and lots of words! Kaim or the other people involved in these "dreams" do not read any of these passages to you--you must read them. It was a total turn off for me and a little boring. At one point, during the 3rd memory recall within an hours time, I just had had enough and decided to thumb ("A" button) my way through the remaining text and it was litterally 8 or 9 pages full of text. It just kept going and going and going and was a big turnoff for me. For those of you who read all the codecs in Mass Effect or the books in the Morrowind games will probably be pleased here (assuming you find the story interesting). I'm not one of those people who is interested in all that. I'm just not into doing that.

- The packaging consists of 3 of the 4 disks spooled and the 4th slipped into a sleeve that rides with the manual. It's kind of lame: http://i81.photobucket.com/alb.../vexvegaz/PIC-0070.jpg

I hope this game picks up and gets more intersting because so far it's rather dull.

you can skip the dreams, just press b when it asks you to press a or b.

and other characters can use the rings, you just need more characters, and more rings. i dont know if you got to this part yet but the skill system is pretty interesting and brings a lot to the game.

i agree the main character is boring.

...Stuff

Aside from the Zeros you mentioned about the protagonist, none of those reasons really bother me at all. In fact, a lot of the reasons people have been mentioning as an annoyance actually attract me more. I really dislike the Mass Effect/KOTOR style RPG and am much more about this style. That plus I hear that the Zeros start to get filled in much better as the game progresses much like some of the characters in previous final fantasy games did (Cloud and Squall come to mind).

I love the two rings idea and I also really like how the immortals can learn skills by fighting with other characters. Voice acting is nice, but scrolling text is still very acceptable to me as long as most cut scenes (dream sequences excluded) involve voice acting. I am also all about turn based RPGs.

I guess in the end this style of RPG is for some people while the Mass Effect style is for others. Both styles can be developed very poorly as well as become a work of art....assuming the game is your style. 😉
