Looks like a pretty solid jRPG for the 360. From the same people who made Blue Dragon. Includes work from the creator of Final Fantasy and Nobuo Uematsu.

Not True. Blue Dragon was only published by Mistwalker and Microsoft. Blue Dragon was made by the same people that made Vampire Rain(worst game ever) according to IGN.

didn't these used to be called RPGs? Now they're JRPGs? Just call them RPGs.

RPG is a pretty broad category. Turn-based RPGs (aka JRPG or console RPG), action RPGs (Diablo), tactical RPGs (Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics), combinations of the above, and nowadays most non-RPGs even include some RPG elements like character development (Crackdown, Bioshock, Saints Row, just about every sports game...). So it's useful to differentiate.

Not true. BD was developed by both Mistwalker and Artoon.

You beat me to it.

From what I hear, they used pathetic packaging for this game. 3 of the 4 discs are stacked on top of each other, with the 4th being in a sleeve. Ridiculous.

You're right, my good man. I say......toss your 360s out the window!

TO THE STREETS!!

Holy crap, does this really come on four DVDs?

I'd like to check it out eventually, but probably won't be doing so anytime soon. I'm kind of tired of turn-based RPGs but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Yeah, it's very story/cut-scene intensive from what I've read. There's virtually no change in the standard JRPG turn-based mechanics. In an interview, the creator said he wanted to concentrate on making a compelling story.

I guess we'll see if that pays off or not....

Edit: Current Metacritic score - 72

Doesn't sound like the reviewers are enamored with Lost Odyssey keeping the standard Final Fantasy gameplay.

If it weren't for the 20 hours of cutscenes, I would love to play this game since I really enjoy FF style turn based ATB system. The excessive cut scenes are why I won't be purchasing it. It is such a let down because I was initially so excited when I heard about this game. 🙁

I picked it up today. Only played about an hour so far (meaning I just got to a place where I really have any freedom), but it seems like my kind of game already. Story-centric, mysterious shit going on, turn based battle system, and nice crafting and ability systems.

is there any way to turn off the rumble? i have a cut on my hand and could live without it for a while.

btw the opening cutscene is win.

Press the Xbox button to bring up the sidebar thingy, go to Personal Settings, go to Vibration, uncheck checkbox.

Everything about this game makes me want to play it except for the cutscenes. I don't think I can deal with that many.

I think well done storyline can do a lot to help out a game that is only so-so in other aspects.

I got this game on Wednesday and I am loving it so far. I'm a storybased RPG fan (Xenogears = best game of all time in my opinion). My only complaint is the absurd difficulty in the early game. The first boss I fought had a 250 groupwide attack...my group had 300-500 hp per person. I didn't do any level grinding outside of the random battles that naturally occured, though. I beat him on my 5th try, only because he didn't use that attack for the majority of the battle. Other than that, I've found the game's pacing brisk enough to keep my interested, and the Thousand Years of Dreams sequences are extremely well written.

If you're looking for a JRPG that revolves around the story and character development, I highly recommend Lost Odyssey.

Considering who designed this game, part of me hope it is somewhat successful but the numbers it pulls in are small enough to convince the same team to work on something just like this but without the massive amounts of cut scenes. I want good FF style games again damnit! 🙁

X-2 and XII just didn't do it for me. I haven't enjoyed FF since X.

Hmm ok how long is the average cut scene? I want to play this but I can't stand watching for too long.

I wish people would learn to tell the story through gameplay and not through movies. Mass Effect did a pretty good job at that.

The longest cutscene I've encountered so far was ~5 minutes. About the same as an FFXII cutscene (definitely not as long as Xenosaga).

Thats not bad but I heard 20 hours total. That is kinda scary. Guess I'll wait till people finish it and see what up.

But is there a cut scene every 10-15 minutes? How much actual play time is there supposed to be in this game if you do not include the 20 hours of cut scenes?

I'm at the beginning still, which is usually very cutscene heavy in JRPGs. The very beginning had a cutscene every few minutes (but that's not unusual considering I was walking around a city and being introduced to the characters). Overall, I haven't encountered an overabundence of cutscenes. FFXII is a good comparison as far as frequency and length. Lost Odyssey feels like FFXII with more emphasis on character development and a turn based battle system honestly. Which is great for me, I loved FFXII except for the fact that your main character was bland and the battle system was on automatic. 😛

One note, the Thousand Years of Dreams sequences are all text (no voice over) and are typically a good 5 minute read for an average reader. They're really well written and develop Kaim as a character though. So if you're not afraid of a little text, then they're a welcome addition.

Edit: I mean character development in a literary sense, not "zomg must min/max teh statz" sense.
