I believe in being prudent. If you can spend $100 million by placing a number of bases in West Germany that give the USSR serious doubt about coming through the Fulda Gap (and tell it you're serious about contributing to West Germany's defence), that's a lot better than spending $10 trillion and 10 million lives because your only option is to react and try to take back that land after the fact.
Then there's no war that can't be justified. We were right to spend a trillion dollars fighting Saddam, because he could have triggered the communication device that called the aliens he was working with in for a worldwide attack on 'Murica!
Hey, as long as we're spending real money fighting imaginary enemies, let's make it interesting.
You're exhibiting one of the stereotypical behaviours of libertarians that make the rest of us roll our eyes and dismiss you: Simplifying everything to the point of lunacy. It's the main reason that Ron Paul and others of his archetype aren't taken seriously.
And you're exhibiting stereotypical behaviors of the average Democrat and Republicans. Paranoia and poor decision making skills: Believing our enemies are everywhere just waiting to pounce, and spending trillions and killing millions on imaginary threats. It's the main reason libertarians think the mainstream is nuts.
There are good and bad things about having a large military. Imagine that - good and bad, existing at the same time! The good is, as I've mentioned, you're able to be in many places at once and potentially head off problems before they grow in size. That has had a significant impact on the world, and I tend to believe it's been mostly in a positive direction, for both the U.S. and the world at large.
And you're wrong. But don't worry, much better men than you have been wrong about war.
Rough numbers: Since WW2, in inflation adjusted dollars, we've spent $30 to 40 trillion dollars on "defense". Please explain what we've gotten for that investment. A stable middle east? Ended the worldwide drug problem? Ceased violence in Africa?
