Well according to the "benchmarks" that are out already, the 470 exchanges blows with the 5870.

So if the 480 does as well, as your theory states, then that means the 470 and 480 could possible go back and forth as well.

I'm going to say that isnt likely.

Early benchmarks show the 480 trading blows with the 5870, not just the 470. Obviously in games that favor the Fermi architecture, the 470 could probably be as fast as the 5870. The 480 would be faster in those cases. In games that favor Evergreen, the 5870 could be as fast as the 480 and so the 470 would be a decent amount slower. It's not unlikely.

Unless the GTX480 prices in at $299 and the 470 prices in at $199. :)

It's funny a ton of people here seem to be OK with GTX series being priced in the $399+ range (even if has similar performance to 5870) and $500-599+ for GTX480?

How quickly did they forget that 4870 launched at $299 and offered 80% of the performance of the GTX280 which at the time cost $649: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341
How did that turn out? NV had to lower prices to $400-$450.

Given the leaked benches (assuming they are true) GTX470 to 5870 is what GTX260 216 to 4870 was during the last generation. Last time, those with $ to blow decided to choose GTX285 which was a $150+ more expensive = GTX480. Of course in that case it was a lot better to just pick up the 4870 X2 then. GTX285 was the oddball card that cost way too much for the extra 20% performance. The only problem is 5970 is MIA.

If GTX470 is slower than 5870, it has no business being priced at $399. If GTX470 is as fast as 5870 for $399, it is still disappointing since we had this performance 6 months ago. If NV was competitive, maybe we would have seen 5870 for $349 or even $299 by now. This is the most unfortunate part.

It'd actually be a bit funny if the GTX480 launches at $600 then AMD *raises* prices of the 58x0 to make it price competitive with Fermi (assuming Fermi isn't much faster).

Seriously, if these performance numbers and rumored Fermi priceing are true then I wouldn't expect AMD to lower prices anytime soon.

I have a feeling that the 5870 and GTX 470/480 will NOT be CPU limited in a lot of situations.

With all due respect, that's wishful thinking when it comes to modern games. Most games are still GPU limited at high resolutions with AA, especially new games. If you are looking to buy one of these graphics cards for $400+, you aren't playing Left for Dead 2 at 1680x1050 for which 8800GT is sufficient.

BFBC:2, ArmA2, STALKER: Call of Pripyat, and Crysis require 5970 for optimal performance. There is no way a single GTX470 or 5870 will be limited by Core i7 CPU (unless you are talking about console ports like Assassin's Creed 2).

So this should be at or slightly faster than a GTX 295? Color me surprised!!!!!!!!!!!! It is as fast as 2x the previous generations GPU. Like I expected and have been saying since last Fall.

Last I looked a good brand 5870 cost 420$ Seems a card with 99% of it's performance for 20 less is not so bad?

I'm sure prices will drop for all these cards in a month or 2.

Anyone else getting dizzy from the spin?

Come on...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-301-_-Product 5870 for $380 from the egg.

Where do you see 99% performance from the rumoured 470 bench vs 5870 in anything but cherry picked situations?

1. 5870 - $380 on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-301-_-Product

2. So now it's OK to deliver similar performance 6 months late at the same price? If NV was 6 months out of the gate and ATI just launched their cards with similar performance, would you say the same thing?

3. GTX470 is using a 500mm^2 gpu die with 320-bit memory interface vs. 334mm^2 gpu on 256-bit memory interface. Continue down this path and HD6870 may provide similar performance at half the gpu die size. This doesn't look so good for the bottom line of the company considering the manufacturing costs...or sets up GTX5x0 series on this new bloated architecture.

I think the main "spin" would be saying that the GTX470 is $20 for the same performance.
We don't know pricing, we don't know performance for certain.
And even when we do know NV pricing, ATI might change theirs in response.

Saying "99% performance for $20 less" when it could be 90% performance, it could be 110% (on average), and it could be $20 less, or it could be $50 more (if it was $399 and ATI dropped prices) changes it entirely.

Supposing what will offer value for money or not is pointless and silly.

So, according to this link, they've met the standard of the single GPU getting as good or slightly better performance than last gen's dual card. If it had been delivered at the same time as the 5870 last fall, everyone would be perfectly happy. With a 6 month delay, I expect people are going to be underwhelmed (at least the objective ones, the die-hard green fans are going to claim the performance crown makes the delay irrelevant). Pile on top that the card is (probably) going to be extremely hot, power hungry, expensive, and produced in limited supply. People are going to be disappointed.

So, I guess you wont be getting one?.....LOL, I can guarantee you there will be a lot of people NOT disappointed.

yeah, but a lot of people wouldn't be dissapointed if nvidia rebadged a last gen card again. some nvidia fanboys are nipping at the heels of apple fanboys at tossing their masters salad.

I dont know which benchmarks you're seeing but every early benches show, 5870 clearly dominating 470 in every resolution.

Now the question is, how fast is 480 compared to 470? History has shown that ATI cards have been deadly fast in certain games like HAWK, Dawn of War II, etc.

Good Brand? They are all based on a reference card.

Sapphire, XFX, HIS, Asus are going for $370 shipped nowdays. Do you get your hardwares only from bestbuy?

Is that so...

I was under the impression that it was for single GPU's... some performance may be found here and there, but mostly the drivers generally help with bug fixes and features. Like I said earlier, I'd like to see some reviews... it's been a while since the 58xx cards came out. I'd love to see launch drivers vs. a current driver.

Im thinking of making a custom detachable frying pan cooler system that will allow you to use the power of your fermi to cook eggs and meat while you play.

Nvidia can price them at least 15% higher than ATI because the 4x0's have more memory and more bandwidth. So $350 for the 470 and $479 for the 480 would be about right. If they are scarce though I would guess $399 for the 470 and $549 for the 480. It's a shame we don't have pricing information only 2 weeks away from launch.

Specs are completely irrelevant. By that logic, AMD could price their cards higher because they have more stream processors. The only thing that matters is price and performance. How many bits, bytes, processors, bandwidth, fillrate etc.. is not important.

I wonder if AMD will start pumping out more 5970's at release of Fermi. I'd happily pay $600 for it if it ever became available at MSRP.

Yep price/performance is the only thing but I don't see the 480 at anything less than $600.
