Did anyone notice sales taxes went up? 18% now. Aparantly government upped it because of covid. Going by FB so not the most reliable source but someone posted a receipt. They tacked on a 5% GST on top of the existing HST. Quite ridiculous considering the whole point of HST was to get rid of having a separate GST/PST and now they're just adding GST back.
Keep an eye on you next purchases & see if there's an added tax. Maybe the one posted on FB was in error?

Search you governments tax pages to see what, if any, change there is.

And work returns.

I have a work related activity every day from Tues to Sat next week.

I'm not ready. I've devolved, perhaps beyond repair.

I'd never before heard of California University of Pennsylvania.

On the topic of CFB, it'll be interesting to see how this season plays out as MLB has had to deal with a few breakouts and resultant schedule disruption. Worst case scenario, some major team will have to shut down its season if enough players get sick. The Big 10 is probably somewhat jealous of the other conferences playing fall football, and the recent rumor was they might consider beginning play by December (presumably if all the regional infection rates are trending down).

I don't live in Canada, so I'm going to say... no? There is one nice thing about having Trump around, you know that he wouldn't raise taxes in 'Merica during an election year!

I happen to work in an industry place that keeps track of such information....

PST rate of 7% has remained the same since its last change 07/01/2019.

GST rate of 5% has remained the same since its last change 01/01/2008.

HST rate of 15% has remained the same since its last change 07/01/2016.

A little schedule disruption is fine. I don't think it's terrible that MLB didn't put 30 teams into two bubbles (highly impractical) and a few breakouts in a non-contact sport just aren't the end of the world. The 60-game schedule itself is a joke, but that's somewhat of a separate issue (billionaires and millionaires arguing over money).

What really sucks is that CFB players are generating millions for their schools during a pandemic, risking their health, and are getting no hazard pay of any type. The only recourse is opting out and declaring for the draft if they're eligible.

Not sure if anyone saw the NFL game last night but they had a stat that they have tested over 64k tests since middle of August and have had exactly 5 positives. They were all non players too.

And then in the game they showed these little fitbit looking things that all personel must wear and it basically tracks where everyone is at all times while doing NFL stuff. So that if someone comes down with covid, they can immediately do contact tracing and know exactly who the person with it was around, for how long, and how close they were.

That is some really neat tech they are using.

Pooled testing and technological contact tracing are very powerful tools when there is the will to utilize them.

Israel is closing the country back again because of a spike of new cases, in the thousands IIRC.

Even here in Ontario we are seeing an increase in cases. Schools being open, with like 30+ students in one class is not going to help either.

I still say, and I've said it from the start, travel is the #1 issue. They need to stop people from traveling around. Create regional bubbles and absolutely no one is allowed in or out, except for freight. When those bubbles are covid free for at least 3 weeks, then technically they can go to 100% normal, except for travel.

Eventually, all bubbles would be covid-free, then you combine them. Eventually the province is covid-free and then eventually the whole country is covid-free and is one big bubble and people can start to travel freely within the country. Keep border closed. Even now there's tons of refugees and travelers pouring in. Fuck "right to travel". How about all the other rights like being able to visit family in old age homes, go to restaurants, operate a business and basically living a normal life? Why sacrifice all that just so people can go on vacations? Only way to squash this virus is to stop spreading it which means to deny all forms of travel within designated bubbles. Block all travel, create bubbles, and it's the only way to stop this.

For big cities, may need to create bubbles within the city, make sure each one has the necessities like a grocery store etc and don't allow people in/out of those.

Some people don't "believe in the virus" and will travel everywhere doing everything just because. If this thing had a 30% morality rate we'd be burning the dead in trenches and the sky would be blackened with their ashes because people have to go have weddings, house parties, and clubs.

The NBA has been doing this for weeks, and it seems to be working well.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that no NFL players have contracted the virus within the past 4 weeks. That would make the players, as a group, the social distancing champs of America.

FWIW, a week ago the official list is longer than 5 (unless it's strictly a watch list, I can't tell):

If this virus is particularly similar to the regular flu, how different would the vaccine be compared to the flu? I pretty much thought I'd get it as soon as it became available, but now I'm second guessing myself considering the goal of Nov.1 and the potential vaccines being "too" rushed.
There's no way I'm gonna be a guinea pig for a rushed vaccine. If only for the fact that that would be a tacit endorsement for Trump. I regard him as a greater threat to US security than the covid-19 virus.

Also the NBA's Fitbit or Fitbit-like device is also a full health monitor because researchers were able to correlate the specific signals early on in the illness for at least some cases it seems.

Has there been any official word on who would receive a vaccine first? I know there was speculation that it would probably be front line workers. And who makes that decision? CDC, NIH, each states health dept.?
I'm specifically asking for the US only.

my grandpa is so sick of being stuck inside that he wants to be first in line for the vaccine

he has some other health problems that would make getting the virus go badly for him

but getting close to 90, he also feels like it is taking away maybe the last year or two that he had to get out and do things

I can see his perspective and if he wants a vaccine ASAP come hell or high water I don't disapprove one bit. I'm in a completely different situation.
