Asymptomatic, superspreadors, reinfecteds and now growing anecdotal evidence suggesting long-term permanent heart damage. Are the dead better off? The dead only know one thing ... its better to be alive.
Heart damage a major concern, this goes way beyond the lungs.

I think the "A" and "B" vaccines in the US that are scheduled for this early release are both mRNA-based.
Strange that Scarpozzi said most of the candidates use live virus, and "proven delivery methods." Many of the leading candidates use genetic techniques developed since SARS, and several firms being funded by the feds have never before delivered any vaccine.

Pretty sure AZ, Pfizer, and J&J have delivered vaccines to market before. The new platforms don't really concern me. There used to be no subunit vaccines either.

And we won't have a 100% (though, no vaccine I know of is that effective). So if we get 50%, the minimum that the FDA is requiring, then we won't reach the drug assisted herd immunity level we need (60% or more).
People are going to wait to take any vaccine because they are being purposely rushed and we won't have any indication of the long term effects that are seen in a 5 year study.
You know, not all of the immunity that counts toward herd immunity comes from vaccines. You can reach herd immunity through community transmission.

I love how the Russians called their vaccine "Sputnik V". Even when it comes to saving lives, the Ruskies need to brag about getting it done before those lazy Americans do :)

Yes, but zin was mentioning that only 30% of people are willing to take it. So that becomes around 15% (vaccinated and half aren't protected) + community infection and recovery.
Really pathetic.

I wonder if that 30% is people who are willing to take it right away vs later. Even me personally when it comes out, I will probably wait at least a year to make sure there's not some weird long term effect that is only discovered later on. Also depends where it comes from. Now that Trudeau's Chinese vaccine has been scrapped I have more confidence that the vaccine we get here will be made in US or Canada, so I will trust that more than the Chinese one we were going to get.

There are dozens and dozens of vaccines in development or testing. A vaccine rushed to distribution is going to be viewed by any half informed person as a gamble. Why should I get Vaccine A if Vaccine B or C or D or whatever may prove far more effective if I have the patience for the broad picture to come into focus? I certainly do not expect to be vaccinated before next year even though I'm in a high risk group and could be vaccinated sooner than later. Later may prove the smarter course of action as things play out. That is if you're in a position to remain patient, which I am.

J&J was the main one I was thinking of, but I've heard multiple people mention live virus vaccines. Honestly, I know very little about specifics, aside from what I've seen on the news. I take any claims with a grain of salt until they actually come to the market with a finished product that's made it through trials.

There are no attenuated virus vaccines anywhere besides pre-clinical trials AFAIK. I think the Chinese have advanced an inactivated virus vaccine to early clinical trial.

Oxford-AZ and J&J are working the vector vaccines. Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech have mRNAs.

Amazes me how many grownups have absolutely no clue how disease spreads, yet at the same time we are actively ruining public education. Now its costing us hundreds of thousands of lives.

*looks at social media and sees what people are up to on Labor Day weekend*

I guess it really is conceivable that we'll have some definitive vaccine data by October.

I was accepted into the Pfizer trial but have not been given the poke yet.

Took my wife out for a drive last night showing her all the packed restaurants and "restaurants" that I have been seeing for weeks, she was angry and confused.

I see stuff on TV, and I'm just WTF. I can't see chancing ruining your life for a social event. I haven't been in a restaurant since 2019. Been in one store since middle of March for less than 15 minutes. I don't really give a damn. I don't miss people. I have a nice misanthropic streak and what I see on TV news stokes it. I'm skating the streets every day, it's the only time I leave the house except to give my car a 20 mile drive every few weeks (recirculating the air!).

Ended up taking a mini-vacation by driving to another city.... Tried to stay socially distanced.... went to places like the Zoo, where it's all outside, I can control how close I am to others... etc....

Hooooooooooly shit. The number of people that either don't wear masks - or wear them inappropriately is off the charts.... and that was more-so at the hotel than anywhere else. At the zoo most wore their mask fully except the morons that didn't cover the nose.

Also if you want to stereotype things - it was disproportionately people that were of the lower classes that tended to do this. Alternatively, I saw people in the higher class do incredibly stupid shit like using a THIN-ASS scarf as both a fashion statement and trying to insinuate that it blocks anything.

Went and got tested yesterday to see if I got infected since I stayed in a hotel, went out to a few uncrowded restaurants, places like the zoo, etc....

First day of school today, should be interesting to see how that went. There has been little to no communication from officials, bus drivers, teachers and kids have pretty much been left in the dark until today.

We''ll find out in 2 weeks if we start getting more cases. I think in my area we'll be ok though as far as that goes, but I could see down south getting hit bad. Even without a pandemic everyone seems to get sick when school starts.

Did anyone notice sales taxes went up? 18% now. Aparantly government upped it because of covid. Going by FB so not the most reliable source but someone posted a receipt. They tacked on a 5% GST on top of the existing HST. Quite ridiculous considering the whole point of HST was to get rid of having a separate GST/PST and now they're just adding GST back.
