My guess? It's because you know things are bad when society reverts to wiping with their left hand, so it's a major line for societal collapse in the minds of many. Even after an apocalypse, people want to feel civilized. In general I have a good amount of TP just... to have, ya know? Basically I keep a package of rolls in all of the bathrooms in general just because it's not something I've ever not going to use...
But I cannot for the life of me understand why... of all things... TP is the first thing people are worried about getting enough of lol.
Food and gas alone sound more useful. I know it wouldn't be fun, but worse comes to worse, I'm sure folks can find someone else to wipe their ass with. Or buy a bidet or something, christ.
It's just freakin' hilarious that people imagine it could ever be that bad because of a flu-like illness that kills ~3.4% and has a vaccine on the way. Granted, I bet those people China sealed in their apartments will wish they stocked up on TP is they stop getting supplies delivered to them.
Didn't buy TP myself but I remember seeing a preper video many years ago where some dude was hiding commercial toilet paper rolls in giant tubes in the rafters over his garage. It was the kind of rolls that go in a dispenser and have a diameter over 2 feet. He was saying something like "get exponentially more than you'll ever need because the last man with toilet paper reserves will live like a king."
