I vaguely recall a previous story where there was a good medical reason why the person in question didn't have a lasting immune response (another procedure / therapy / condition or something). I can't imagine that would be the only case like that.

There's no reason to think immunity won't be similar to SARS-CoV or influenza. We never developed a vaccine for SARS. We already know that nearly everyone who recovered from SARS had some immunity to it for some useful amount of time. Otherwise the earlier SARS-CoV would have been worse than SARS-CoV-2 and it would not have burned out as quickly as it did.

SARS was much more containable as I recall due to people presenting with symptoms promptly and a lack of asymptomatic transmission.

Durability of the immune response will be an ongoing question but for the purposes of deploying effective vaccines so far it looks like it's not going to be problematic like if most people could be reinfected after weeks or months. Vaccines might also produce longer lived/more robust immunity than a mild case of infection

On the subject of masks I see almost no people without them here in Austin. Went to Lowes to get some stuff last weekend and every single person was in compliance, including kids. People for some reason said this could not be done and yet.

I live in the bay area, and almost never see someone without a mask. I have run across a few people who don't wear them over the nose, and when told to, some do, and others are hostile - including both employees and non-employees.

People getting reinfected is a little unsettling, does make you wonder if either the immunity is very short, or maybe there are already several strains around. I'm thinking it's probably that there are several strains. If the immunity was really short we would start seeing way more reinfections I think. Hopefully they will be able to cover all the strains with the vaccine before it becomes like the flu where it mutates too fast.

so far, 2-3 known out of 6 million cases? I wouldn't worry too much about it...

This has been known since late March. It's what viruses do. I wouldn't put much stock into it.

Hard to say right now. I know a guy that was supposed to be doing field work in Panama for like, 4 months. He left mid February but returned mid March because of the Pandemic. He was briefly horribly ill at the time on return with now-obvious Covid-19 symptoms (+ the lack of taste), recovered, but was only tested last week with required, free testing at the University. He took an antibody test (in addition? I'm not sure) and showed antibodies for Covid. That's 5 months out, at most, so promising in at least one case.

Yes very concerning. Hopefully we don't see more reinfection reports.

Yeah, it's a good thing they can still smell through their masks:

Well, there is an update. A couple hours ago, I went to a Popeye's. A young guy was standing next to the line, wearing his mask not covering his nose. I said, 'you need to wear the mask over your nose.'

He got very hostile immediately. It escalated. He went on a minutes long tirade yelling insults. I told him he sounded like a criminal.

He kept it up and I said 'you can shut up'. He said 'say that again.' I said 'you can shut up'.

I started to proceed in the line turning from him and he threw a punch I couldn't see. It knocked a front tooth out.

I told the staff call the police, he left and walked away quickly. I tried to follow in my car but he had disappeared. Likely nothing will come of it. Popeye's told the police they aren't sure the cameras are working, and it's not clear if they cover the customer area.

Why do you feel the need to self-police?

Doesn't exactly sound worth it....

Be careful, man. Lots of crazy assholes out there. Good for you for speaking up.

This obviously didn't help.

Always someone who rushes to try to find fault. His behavior more than justified the comment, and his physical assault showed how right I was. I did plenty to de-escalate as well, but that comment was well justified to his tirade. I told the police officer I said it, he didn't flinch.

Did I say you were to blame?

Hint: It's not about whether or not it was justified. It was about whether it was likely to make things worse or not.

Obviously people should wear masks, but thanks to Breitbart and Fox News we have millions of angry white people who honestly believe its a constitutional right to not wear masks even inside a private business, and they will scream at you and possibly point an AR-15 at you if you're so brazen as to ask them to wear a mask.
Its not worth dying over. I learned quickly dont be tough about the mask thing in public. Just let dickholes be dickholes and leave it at that.

I thought the first SARS burned out quickly because it was far more deadly. It didn't have as much time to spread.

How do you know the guy was white?

It's hilarious the stereotypes that folks here think are acceptable.

It's been that way here in Maryland since the beginning of April.

Not surprisingly our numbers have remained pretty low and in my county they are extremely low.
