Huh? The article implies exactly opposite that. Tropical countries seeing slower spread. Possibly just because people are out more getting more sun and generating more Vitamin D, so take those supplements.
Thanks for reminding me. This self-isolation thing is making my skin whiter. I'd forgotten my supplements today... just took them!

I think you're still safe to go outside (nature trails etc) just avoid people. Though I could be wrong... you'd have to check further into it. But pretty sure I read a statement from a doctor saying it was ok.

Honestly reading about Italy really makes me wish I could just stay home too though. I just drive straight to work and back, but I don't know what rest of my coworkers are doing, so who knows, there is still chance of getting infected if they arn't going straight home too. And same with their spouses etc.

The government needs to shutdown all workplaces completely unless they let people work from home, there needs to be a full stop to having to go anywhere.

I mentioned to my wife last night that there's another thing people aren't really talking about. Prior to all this, we were going thru a vaping epidemic involving some of our youngest demographics. I can't recall if we knew exactly what vaping was doing to their lungs, but with this covid business, who knows how it'll affect teens?
Any teen with brains who's paying attention to this will stop vaping ASAP.
Sure, after we turn their hotels into COVID19 quarantine rooms
Hotels around here (SF Bay) are right now being setup to house the homeless in hopes of avoiding massive pandemic spread in that populace.

I made a poll where you guys can guess at when the Coronavirus quarantine in the US will end. Please vote... I'm curious when you guys think this is going to end!
Dude, that's totally impossible thing to prognosticate. I'd feel like a complete fool and phony to try.

Discouraging concern until it becomes a huge problem...that is the problem.

You seriously thought it was "contained" when you made those statements? Really?
He (Amused) was clearly a tool. 3 days after admitting they had an epidemic coming on the Chinese shut down Wuhan completely. The video I was seeing was stark and unmistakable. I sensed that this was it, the big one, the pandemic we knew was coming. Trump fucked us, folks. From the start.

Oh, then I'm sure it must be true.

It's only Ottawa's top doctor so you do have to take it with a grain of salt I guess.

Even though the Medical Officer of Health is encouraging people to limit non-essential trips outside, she does say you can go outside.

“People can still go outside and walk your dog. It means you can play in the park, take your children out. But as you’re doing those things to make sure you’re keeping distance from others.”

Well, the question of whether or not it's safe is obviously a question for people who have a choice. You know: "Should I continue eating at restaurants or should I stop now and switch to the supplies I bought a couple weeks ago?"

Obviously people need to eat. I just don't think it's right to tell people that it's somehow safer than any other way you might compromise on social distancing just because it isn't a food borne illness. Clearly, restaurant food comes with risks and those risks are likely greater than going out for toilet paper during the peak when we should be isolating. If avoiding the store later was the whole reason to buy food, TP, etc a couple weeks ago, then it's reason to avoid restaurants too.

Sucks for restaurants.

Going out for anything at this point is unsafe. For me it's a question of why. Hopefully this article will shed more light about eating prepared food during this pandemic:

Transmission of Covid-19 and influenza are close enough that the article can probably tell you what to expect in case someone infected (read: asymptomatic carrier) is preparing your food.

To reiterate, going anywhere at this point carries risks. Handling of payment media, opening/closing doors, and touching other surfaces may serve to transmit the disease to you (or from you). Buying and eating food under these circumstances isn't really going to make things much worse.

well i worked as a cook before, ive seen it first hand.

And I'm saying I didn't. I've worked in some low-level places, too, like Burger King and Domino's. These were not 'nice' restaurants. We mostly did our jobs well enough that we were not serving food that fell on the floor.

China knew what would happen if they let it go wild now the western world is about to experience it.

. . . that's revisionist history right there. China tried to cover up Covid-19 until it became evident that they couldn't. They basically did let it go wild.

Duh. Trump said we have massive numbers of ventilators.
Great access to ventilators is not a metric we should be aiming for. It’s like telling the troops that they will have access to the best prosthetic legs in your pre-battle pep talk.

Agree to disagree on that point :). Both for covid19 and the troops :).

On another note : Do men get this thing 2x more than women???? Is that because we are more susceptible or cause we not brain as good?

I ran across an interesting article this morning.

"Fortunately, there is one almost “pure” location for coronavirus data, and that is Princess Cruise’s Diamond Princess cruise ship. This was the ship moored along California’s coast while the government tried to determine the best way to deal with a floating virus bomb. Writing at Watts Up With That, Willis Eischenbach looked at the Princess Cruise’s numbers and discovered some encouraging information:"

83% of the passengers on the ship never got the virus. There is a link within the article that gives the breakdown by age group. It's not what you would expect.

"What an excellent question. Why did 83% of the ship's passengers walk away unscathed?

It’s an especially good question because the majority of passengers were in the 60-79 age group, weighted slightly more heavily towards the 70-79 cohort. In other words, by the time the ship docked, it should have been a floating morgue, but somehow it wasn’t."

It seems we have a strategic reserve of N95 masks that the US government will be making available due to the supply shortage:
(2:05).

They say 5 million will be made available but I assume the reserve is a lot larger.

No, they swept it under the rug along with anyone saying it was something worse until there was no way to pretend it wasn't something serious. Had they jumped on it in December they way they did in late January it may have just gone down in some medical journal footnote.

Once they actually paid attention and tracked it they put a hard lock down on an entire region, a lock down that has barely lifted at all to this day. Had they not done that I cannot imagine how bad it would have been over there.

I'm fine with their response, mostly, it was what worked for them. But you are correct in that it never should have gotten to that point to begin with.

I went to the Secretary of State today to try and renew my license (its been long enough it has to be done in person now) and I've come to the conclusion we are too dumb of a species to survive this. This is how they are handling things:
Everything is appointment only
The large waiting room (150+ people capacity) is completely empty
Only 1 person per available clerk is let in at a time
To notify someone its their turn a staff member slightly opens the door into the tiny entrance vestibule to call a name (Fit about 12 people when shoulder to shoulder)
At 11:45am they were running 30 minutes behind
They opened at 11am
Therefore: a bunch of people (15 when I left) shoved themselves into that vestibule every time it was time to call another name.

At least they fixed the portal so I can actually schedule an appoint for what I need now. We'll see if they have their shit together next week...
Ugh, I wouldn't have been looking forward to going there during this time. Luckily mine was in January.

I've invoked the excellent "meteor 2020" a couple times during this goofiness.

Hey... I'm trying the "wisdom of crowds" approach to figure out an estimate, where you take an average of everyone's semi-educated guesses to come up with a more accurate answer. It's kinda like "Quarantine Sprint Planning"... the developers in the forum will get that analogy.

I just read an article that many people think it's too late. That COVID-19 is everywhere. Just read another article that said this the US government is now saying that COVID-19 will be with us for 18 months or longer! That is crazy. I worry because are we prepared for this to go on after 1 month, let alone 18 months?

Anyway, take care all.

We can't remain quarantined or isolated for 12-18 months. Even 2 months is a big stretch IMO.

We're fucked. Actually the health care system is fucked. Once people get back to regular routines the curve will shoot up again.

This thing spreads like wildfire, we can stop it now, but once community cases rise again its game over, there will be no round 2 self isolation, were all going to have to bite the bullet.

Look at Iran, mass graves appearing everyday.

You're probably correct with your first statement and it's something I've been thinking about as well. However. if it comes to quarantining/isolating myself for 12+ months or taking my chances, I'm taking my chances. I tend to agree with the doctor in the article posted a few posts above - it's probably already too late. At this stage, I'd recommend ramping up medical production, keep the quarantine in place for a couple months to buy time, and then relax it. Keep nursing homes isolated longer if they must, but at some point, people have to live life and can't remain sheltered forever. The damage to the economy, standard of living, and the world itself from isolating everyone for 12-18 months is likely far more than the damage from the virus.

Heh, Mark Rober's YouTube did a video to show just how much bacteria can spread in day to day life.

I have no idea if this could be considered an accurate equivalency - since afterall he is just using a random powder and not actual bacteria or whatever.

Yea. The important thing is to take care of your immune system as best as you can .That's about it .

*Vit D3 has clinically been shown to boost immune system. I take a k2, D3 5000 IU once per day.
*Vit C boost immunity as well, but the jury is still undecided if pills actually work. I take 2 1000 IU per day.
*Take a multi, and get adequate protein. I take a protein shake daily.
*Try to meditate. I know my anxiety can get quite high. Slow down your breathing. I try to meditate for 10m a day.
*Exercise. Gyms are closed, but you can still run, walk. If you have free weights use them. Hell, you can do pushups, situps at home.
*7-9 hours of sleep is key. I'm not trying to stay up to 3am everynight and watch Netflix. I think that is bad for your body and mindset .

Good luck all. :)
