Sounds like we hit the inflection point where it's going to jump. From CNN - "Nearly 9,000 Americans have tested positive for the virus. At least 149 have died."

Shit like this is what tells you things like Airlines knew full well - We have nothing to worry about and can take as much risk as we want because the US government will bail us out. They have no choice.

From 2014 to 2020, in an attempt to increase its earnings per share, American spent more than $15 billion buying back its own stock. It managed, despite the risk of the proverbial rainy day, to shrink its cash reserves. At the same time it was blowing cash on buybacks, American also began to borrow heavily to finance the purchase of new planes and the retrofitting of old planes to pack in more seats. As early as 2017 analysts warned of a risk of default should the economy deteriorate, but American kept borrowing. It has now accumulated a debt of nearly $30 billion, nearly five times the company’s current market value.

At no time during its years of plenty did American improve how it treats its customers. Change fees went up to $200 for domestic flights and to $750 for international. Its widely despised baggage fees were hiked to $30 and $40 for first and second bags. These higher fees yielded billions of dollars, yet did not help the airline improve its on-time arrivals, reduce tarmac delays or prevent involuntary bumping. Instead, American’s main “innovations” were the removal of screens from its planes, the reduction of bathroom and seat sizes and the introduction of a “basic economy” class that initially included a ban on carry-on luggage.

*Vit C boost immunity as well, but the jury is still undecided if pills actually work. I take 2 1000 IU per day.
There is some skepticism regarding vitamin C for most anything other than scurvy:

They do acknowledge that zinc can shorten colds and reduce severity, which is why zinc lozenges are still recommended.

keeping pace in just number of cases? since the US has a bigger population, wouldn't that be an apples to orange comparison?

New cases and deaths, which probably is apples to oranges, but the curve is very similar to Italy's when they only had ~9,000 confirmed cases.

It's tough to get apples to apples - because it's probably moreso based on how densely populated areas are - and not so much on the overall population number.... of course, population density varies wildly based on city.

Tell me about it. Remember this guy?

We had already been told from people who knew better not to let anyone spread that dangerous lie and that anyone spreading it should be ashamed of themselves. Is he? Nope. I called him out and he said I sounded like an Alex Jones conspiracy theorist:

He hasn't posted in this thread since January so I guess he really is "done here."

...but he did go into that OTHER thread to heap blame on the President with absolutely no shame for his own behavior. How do people like that sleep at night?!

Amused: People like you are the problem. You and others like you dismissed/ignored people who know including direct warnings ("don't let anyone tell you the flu is worse"), took comfort in pseudo-intellectual media distortions intended to calm people down, and spread those distortions just because they came from credible sources like the news media quoting flu statistics. Credible sources does not mean they have the right goal. Thanks to them and the people they influenced people who could have prepared much earlier didn't.

News writers aren't experts, no matter how much respect you have for CNN, ABC, etc. They are just writers paid to put a perspective on some numbers or info that make them sound smarter than everyone else so you'll go on reading their news. Read critically, between the lines, and you are your own expert.

When I said earlier that I appreciated this era where we could get first-hand accounting from witnesses and cut through the media narrative, I meant it. This is why. This is vindication.

everyone: get over your petty online vendettas that seem to last years. just, get over it. no one cares.

Ok, so yesterday we had a guy show up to work after having been on vacation for several days. Everybody in the building could hear him snorting/coughing/sneezing... to all appearances, he is very obviously sick with something. His supervisor told him to go home. He apparently got very argumentative about it, and threw out the "its just allergies" bs. Naturally, he came in without even getting tested, and I think he ended up working the entire day. He's not here today... apparently his supervisor found some backbone & insisted he stay home.

if the curve is just based on number of cases, it will be the same...but if you take into account, the percentage of population that was infected, the curve would be very different...

If I worked near that person I would have just gone home myself.

Yes, but the US total should have an asterik next to it. Most people still haven't been tested. In my area there was a person from NY who tested positive a few days ago. My fear is where has he been? The supermarket? The local WaWa (it's a popular convenience store in NE), family, friends, bars, etc. Testing still isn't available in my area. I was thinking about being tested before I even set foot in my dad's home. He's in his 70s. I just don't know yet. :(

Is anyones internet a little wonky? I'm getting slowdowns for a few seconds to a minute, and then it resumes normally.

I can only imagine the number of people online now.

Yes, it could be. It's impossible to tell. Right now the new case curve and the new death curve are very similar to Italy in the earlier stages of its outbreak, but that could just be coincidence.

The situation could be better, the same, or worse. It is apples to oranges, but nobody knows by how much.

If we bail the airlines out, I hope we force conditions on them and eliminate some of their BS (such as shrinking seats). Now may be a good time for that passengers bill of rights....

Though I said "remember this guy," it was about his most-recent comments in this thread, not some previous or old vendetta. It was on-topic and needed to be said... and it does seem that some people care.

Back in January we were told by insiders to shame anyone spreading the dangerous rhetoric that the flu was worse so he's lucky he got a pass until now. He said he was done with the thread so I didn't say more back then but I should have for the sake of others he influenced.

I had no pre-existing vendetta with this guy. I have a problem with his disgusting and prideful lack of remorse and that's the reason I won't let it go. Call it "petty" if you want, but people need to feel social pressure when they behave like that or else they will continue with zero self-awareness.

Dang:

Look, I'm not the most social person - in fact, I pretty much hate crowds and stuff like that. But I am not willing to live as a prisoner in my own home for 12-18 months or longer. And what if they can't develop a successful vaccine? What then? Are supposed to live like this for years?

No. I'll give them their 2 months. Heck, I'll give them until the end of summer if necessary. But when fall rolls around, I'm done with this crap and will take my chances.
