GameCube North American Sales Figures Revealed
Nintendo discloses how successful the price cut has been.

October 03, 2003 - Yesterday, it was reported that sales of the GameCube had quadrupled since the price cut to $99. Following from that news, Nintendo has now released the official sales figures in the hope of proving how successful their new strategy has been.
In the week following the price cut, Nintendo said it sold 61,000 consoles, up from weekly average sales of 15,000 during August and September. Nintendo's senior vice president of marketing, George Harrison, believes this figure is sustainable throughout the holiday season, and cites the introduction of over 100 new games before the end of this year as a major factor in that belief.

GameCube Sales Rocket
Sales have quadrupled already.

October 02, 2003 - Nintendo today announced that sales of its GameCube have quadrupled since the system's price reduction to $99.99. The company did not provide specific sell-through data.
"Clearly, this move is what game players desired, and also what our retail partners wanted," said George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America. "We're already receiving requests for additional shipments of Nintendo GameCube systems between now and the holidays."

"The price cut is working great!" stated Dan DeMatteo, president, GameStop. "Our sales of Nintendo GameCube have increased more than fourfold. We are currently increasing our shipment requests for the system throughout the holidays."

Nintendo will continue to support the new, low price of GameCube with $50 million in marketing power through the holiday season. The company will spend another $50 million in a brand strengthening "who are you?" campaign that encapsulates big-budget cinema spots expected to debut before movies like The Matrix Revolutions.

The driving minds behind the cube need to be fired and replaced by people who have at least some idea what the hell they're doing. I knew it would fail the day i saw the first photo of this thing - clearly they lost 75%+ of their client base by making it look like an 8-year-old girl's lunchbox. Sales may have quadrupled, but all that happened is that they went from downright horrible to marginally acceptable. Nintendo still has the GameBoy, but when SONY comes out with their own pocket system, it will slowly kill off the GameBoy just like the PS2 killed off the Cube.

well I think it's too early to say what or what not the PSP will do (playstation portable), but I also think the Gamecube strategy is working well. If I hadn't gotten pickpocketed and had to cough up $300 of my own money this week, I too would have gone out and gotten a gamecube even though I have a PC and an XBox and have owned a PS2 before. It's worth about 200$ to get a Gamecube, 2-3 games and a couple controllers (using hot deals of course). I can't wait for Mario Kart Double Dash

lol. Slowly kill the Gameboy? It's the best selling console in history. The GBA and GBA SP are both backwards compatible with pretty much any GB game made before it. Unless N changes media formats or makes their newer system incompatible with their huge game base, Sony won't have a chance with the POS or whatever it's called. And um, the PS2 never killed off the Cube.

Yeah, I don't think Sony's handheld is going to make much of dent in GBASP sales.

Also, I don't think GCN looks like a "girl's lunchbox." I think it's kind of cool looking. And a number of SFF barebones PCs bear a superficial resemblance to the GCN.

All I can say is everone in our family really enjoys the Gamecube, grown-ups and kids. There's a fantastic variety of games, and many more excellent titles coming out in the next few months.

Personally I don't have any desire to own the other 2 consoles, but even if a person did prefer the PS2 or xbox, I think the Gamecube is affordable enough and the titles are good enough that most gamers wuold be very happy to have a Gamecube too.

Oh to clarify on Krassus' point about the people behind the GC needing to be fired - I do believe that. I in fact was one of the first people at the Gamestop near me to preorder one the day it was announced at E3. The GC was a nice system at $199 but the games just didn't have much appeal to me at launch. After getting quality time with all 3 systems one Christmas I traded it on eBay for an XBox b/c that was the system that made the most sense to me to get. At $99, however, the Gamecube is a great addition to any gamer's library, regardless of what you might think about the controllers or the games. I can't see a reason not to get a Gamecube now.

edit: Totally agree with Dead Parrot above me

Man, don't I know it. I bought three of the originals, (siblings broke the first two), then a gameboy pocket so I didn't have to carry that hulking thing around in my pocket, then a gameboy color, (omg, various shades of the primary colors), then a gameboy advance (the first real advancement in technology since what.. the gameboy itself? Plus, REAL color games!), and just recently, a Gameboy Advance v2.0 (AKA, GameBoy SP.) What does Nintendo have to show for its new portable lineup? Rehashed Super NES titles at a little over half the price I paid for them the FIRST time around! YAAAY.

My hopes are high for the Sony handheld. Gameboy needs a competitor, and I think the unit has some neat capabilities.

The irony of someone b1tching about buying 7 different Gameboy consoles amazes me.

You're right - the GB needs a competitor, but everyone so far that has exceeded what the GB could do and much more has failed. The N-Gage and Sony's will more than likely just be failures like the ones before it.

Just for the record, the first three spanned one year, when I was five years old.
The pocket when I was probably 10.
The color when I was what, 12 to 14.
The advanced when I was 16.
And I recently got the SP from a friend as a graduation present.

My point in saying that in the first place was that the Gameboy has brought nothing really new to the table in years. It's been revised, oh hell yeah, but after being a Nintendo fanboi for 15 years, I've still yet to play a decent game for Gameboy that I haven't played somewhere else first, better. (Mostly on the SNES.) Oh, and Tetris. I still play Tetris to this day. That, and Links Awakening are the only two games I use my Gameboy for. :D

Have you even seen the specs for what the PSP will have.

There is no way in hell Nintendo is going to be able to compete.

I see your point but the fact is, the handheld market doesn't move anywhere near as fast as the normal console ones. The Game Gear was a portable Master System with full color screen (256 colors maybe?), the Lynx also having a full color screen - it took Nintendo almost, what, 10 years to come out with a full color portable? The demand for full color portables didn't really hit until after sales of the GB Color started slumping, and the abysmal Virtual Boy. (Which I still have in my closet) That's why they haven't needed to bring anything new to the table. A lot of the GBA games now are SNES ports, which does make for some of the same old same old. It will take a lot for the NGage and Sony's handheld to beat the GBA though.

The XBox and Gamecube both have SUPERIOR hardware to the PS2. The PS2 total sales > Gamecube + XBox sales, combined. What's your point?

Nintendo has been taking baby steps with its Gameboy series.

Sony on the other hand takes a big a$$ freaking leap with the PSP by making it have graphics on par with the PS2. Not only that....but Sony is also going to market it as a portable multimedia player capable of playing video and music. Which it where it certainly has plenty of past experience with.

I had so much hope for the Virtual Boy. Being the Nintendo Fanboi, I was one of the only people I knew who rushed to the store to buy one, but I ended up with two games for it. Everything Nintendo DID have for it was pretty lackluster, and it didn't take long for production to dry up.

All that with a price tag of $300-400. Handhelds are portable, cheap, and fun entertainment, one of the pinnacles of the Gameboy series' success. Sony's is going to be big and bulky if it can play regular DVD movies and CD music. Sounds like more of a novelty than a bonafide competitor. Much like the $300 NGage

Yep. Plus it made my head hurt. Virtual Tennis was pretty cool but god I felt like I was going blind after taking my head out of that thing.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo can come up with a better system than PSP. They are contracting ATI to do the graphics for their next systems(GC 2, next GB).
