That's probably part of it, but there is also something magical about certain price points, $99 being one of those magical price points. Significant numbers of consumers will buy something for $99 on impulse, what Nintendo needs to do to maintain sales is generate enough buzz through advertising that people will have Nintendo in the back of their mind when they head to Best Buy or Circuit City intending to pick up a CD or DVD.

And I'm seeing quite a bit of Nintendo ads in the last few days so they are trying.

I might join those 61,000 other people who bought it this week :) For $99 its so hard to pass up. GC has some great exclusive titles and I think 99 + cost of game is worth it to play those titles. For those who say its a kids console... I don't see it so much as a kids console but more of a mass appeal console. With a GC I can play many multiplayer games with my family/friends that they will enjoy and wont be offended by all the violence/language. Amazingly there are people in this world who do not like sports games and violent games... Also it can get boring killing the same skinned guy over and over and over and over and over... that's why I like the GC it offers some different games to the mix.
Also there is no point in continuing to attempt to make 00Jones buy/respect the GC. He obviously hates every game on the GC. Maybe if there were more "adult"(mass killing) games on it 00Jones would like the GC better ;)

I may get an XBOX for me later

Then get a cheap Dreamcast and an Xbox. And a new Sonic game is coming out on the Xbox.

Both Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were ported to GC. Get both Sonic Adventure DX, and Sonic Adventure 2 for GC. I love both games, I play them on Dreamcast to this day. I might even get the GC versions too, just to round out my collection. Sonic heroes is coming for GC also.

$99 is less than what my dad paid for the Atari VCS back in 1979 (it was $120 IIRC). I'd say that's a pretty good deal.

IMO...
PS2 has worse graphics than X-Box or GC. It sold so well in its early days, not because of any killer games, but because it had great graphics (at the time), it was backwards compatible with PS1 games (the biggest videogame library on the planet), and it would play DVDs at a time where a "cheap" set-top DVD player cost $300. Since it was the first current-generation console available, it established a huge user base. Consequently, more game developers make games for PS2 than for any other console.

Now, consider the above scenario and compare it to the GBA and the Sony PSP (and that Nokia thingie). Who knows who will win? I just hope the competition makes things better for us gamers.

Nintendo has acknowledged that it screwed up relations with external game developers. I'm not sure how they intend to fix things, but I hope they do. Increasing sales should help a lot.

BTW, I do agree with the people who say that Nintendo really screwed up by making the original cube look like "an 8-year-old's lunchbox." When I first saw it, I was horrified. But, I ended up buying a Platinum GC, and I think it looks good. It's very well-made, and unlike the X-box or PS2, VERY easy to tote around.

Lost all merit with that one

What's wrong with Mario Sunshine? It's a fun game that I can play with my daughter.

Oh I forgot, you'll only play good games like Super Zombie Bloodfest Rehash 3.

Not true at all, when PS2 came out the many DC titles beat it consistently. It wasn't until they made GT3 almost a year later that the PS2 finally had a game that outdid DC graphically. PS2 sold initially on pure 100% Grade A hype. Why would people bid $800 on Ebay for a system that doesn't even have decent games? People would talk about the $800 that people were paying on Ebay, and they would talk about the PS2 like it was a gift was heaven.

No ;) I think everybody knows that gamecube is a kid's console, so I don't need to harp on it right now. As mentioned it looks like an 8 year old girl's lunchbox, the controller is small for kids' hands, the price is low so as to be more easily afforded by parents, and the games are obviously more child oriented than the PS2 or xbox. Although it does have some "mature" games, I think we all know that in its current state nintendo would never allow grand theft auto to run on its console. Why? Because it would lose the child-like attraction of the unit. It's the first choice for parents and I'd probably buy one if I had a kid who wanted to start video gaming with a harmless console that isn't going to instill in him bad values, like beating hookers to death with baseball bats.

Here are my complaints about the GameCube:

-Small media

What the heck is up with that? You can't play DVDs in it, you can't play CDs in it. If you had made it normal size, imagine how much game data you could actually put on a disk!

-Small controllers

Americans are bigger than Japanese. Quite a bit. I'm big for an American. I shouldn't have to straighten my hand out with a hammer after 30 minutes of playing a game. Whoever was incharge of controller design should be canned.

-Ugly console

Man, that thing is stupid looking. Make it shorter and longer. So you can't call it a cube, fine. Gamecube isn't all that great of a name anyway. Paint it, give it some LEDs and give each LED color scheme a name. Bloodstar for black and red. Valkarie(sp) for white and blue. Centurian for black and blue. Sell attachable panels so you can give it whatever color scheme you want.

-Loud, long loads

It sounds like a blender and takes for freaking ever to load. Zzzzzzzzzzzzt. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzt. Oh, you pushed the "A" button? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt.

There you go, Nintendo. My $.02. I expect my $20,000 consultation fee to be sent immediately. :D

I had an xbox that I specifically returned because the fans were so noisy that it was useless for DVD or CD playback.

On the other hand the Gamecube makes no noise at all. And it loads games and levels quickly.

So your comments are puzzling.

As far as design, I think the Gamecube is the best of the 3, the xbox looks like a junior high school kid's study hall drawing.

Huh? My PS2 is silent. It's got a fairly quiet load. My roomate's Gamecube sounds like a damned blender when it's loading.

I don't really like any of the XBox package. It's too freaking big, and it's hot. I like the PS2s design the best. It blends in and looks generic. Plus it fits well on a shelf and doesn't have the GCs top loading slot.

Looking at the reviews of Viewtiful Joe it's looking like I am going to have to pick up a $99 Cube today.

I didn't expect much from this game, but when I played the demo I knew that one these had my name on it. This game is the coolest thing since Jet Grind Radio.

I have to concur with Dead Parrot Sketch on the GC design. It loads a lot faster than either PS2 or Xbox and is way quieter than the Xbox and the earlier PS2. In fact some PS2 games take longer to load than most DC games, and the DC was a slow loader (as much as I love it).
