The real legends that car lovers care about are never only because they are the fastest, most over-engineered cars of an era. Look at the Porsche 356, British roadsters, the Acura NSX, Lamborghini Miura or 55/57 Chevy Bel Air.

Performance will always be a secondary when considering a car's charm because performance will always be superseded in time. Even truly "fast" performance cars had other charms.

The Mclaren F1, F40 and Viper were absolutely raw in their experiences. The Zondas are design studies. The Porsche Turbos have legacy and feel.

The GTR has excellent performance, but little else, it's an over-engineered one trick pony that coddles the driver and isolates him from the road. It is designed so well and so over-thought from the performance to even interior polyphony programmed instrumentation that it's essentially a surgical tool, excellent in what it was designed to do, but absolutely, soul crushingly without personality. It's the Toyota Camry of sports cars.

For $75k I would much rather have a SLK-55, Boxster/Cayman S or Corvette Grandsport or a slightly used Maserati Granturismo.

Going fast for the sake of going fast is stupid, especially in the case of a car that will be driven on public roads. If you aren't buying a car for racing, numbers racing in cars like the GTR is nothing but masturbation.

The GTR is fast but absolutely soul-less. It'll still be remembered years from now by a small group of fanboys, but it is still overrated to hell and back. Its like the Supra, except the Supra was more fun to drive at legal to slightly extra-legal speeds.

Very well said! The GTR is cool but will never match the legacy of the 911, especially the air-cooled 911 turbos. Also, the current 911 GT2 RS is an absolute slayer.

No this shows YOU don't have a grasp of the English language. We are talking about performance cars and it does EXACTLY what it's supposed to do for cheaper than other cars. Just because YOU don't think it's a good car doesn't mean it isn't. I'll never buy one as it's not my cup of tea but it goes faster than cars more expensive than it. That's all it's meant to do. Just like the Corvette. Faster than cars thousands of dollars more expensive. It doesn't need a "heritage", it doesn't need you to like it. It does what it does exceptionally well. They could have gone all out but it would have made it that much more expensive. They didn't want to as they wanted to give people the utmost in performance for the lowest possible price.
