Name a better car for $84,060 then.......

The GT-R is a nice car and is great bang for the buck, but I'd still take an M3 convertible or an M5 over that and have some change for a nice lunch.

You can get two loaded camries and it'll be TWICE as good... I'm just saying.

But if you're talking about the back of a car, back of LS-460 > S-Class. If I'm gonna be in the back, might as well be in a boat.

Do you mean the LS460L / LS600L? The regular LS460/600H backseat is exactly comparable to the standard S-Class (and standard 750/760).

The limo backseat models with super plush rear executive areas are :

LS460L/LS600L
S-Class (various extended wheelbase models)
750li/760li

those are pretty much king kong until you spring for a Maybach or RR/Bentley.

the Z06's tranny doesnt blow up without traction control....

While I'd go for a Z06 over a GT-R for a number of little reasons, I don't believe the GT-R with the software updates has any known reliability flaws, which is pretty much mandatory for GT-Rs that come in for service that didn't have it, and obviously all new GT-Rs sold for quite some time now. Out of all the hype about GT-R transmissions exploding, I think only a couple actually did.

Unless you're just posting for the lulz value 😀

For $75K, I'd probably go with an SLK55 AMG if we're talking new. If used is an option, $75K could get me into a pretty low mileage SL65 AMG.

I guess I just like Mercedes.

mostly 😀

did they finally settle the suit about voiding warrenty's for turning it off?

I lost track since I dont have that cash

Boats are the most comfortable though. Mmmmm backseat of S-Class...

Backseat is pretty slippery and can give you a headache. I rather sit in the comfy front seat.

GT-R is pretty damn ugly car but probably the best performance car you can buy for ~$75k. I know they raised the price so it might be slightly more but I'm not current on GT-R market price.

i've been thinking if i were to splurge in the not terribly distant future, it might be for a boxster spyder.
For sure the GTR is a badass car, but it also strikes me as something of an overengineered approach.
i've never driven any of the cars mentioned here though so this all merely wishful thinking.

Yep, settled it about a year ago. Now that the new software is actually faster with VDC on than off, along with Nissan covering warranties unless it dies basically while VDC is off or immediately after, the tranny issues are sort of a moot point.

The LC2 seems to be a lot better for some reason, I guess they really had time to perfect it. It's reportedly just as fast but not as rough.

^^ Will be interesting to follow up with this one.

one thing I don't get is the front. I know car manufacturers are going for "family" looks, ie a car is instantly identified as that brand's because they all have the same design. But why the hell do the Evo and GTR have the same front?

edit: apparently a Gundam fixation

The GTR is overhyped and overrated. Speed is not the be all end all of cars.

The real legends that car lovers care about are never only because they are the fastest, most over-engineered cars of an era. Look at the Porsche 356, British roadsters, the Acura NSX, Lamborghini Miura or 55/57 Chevy Bel Air.

Performance will always be a secondary when considering a car's charm because performance will always be superseded in time. Even truly "fast" performance cars had other charms.

The Mclaren F1, F40 and Viper were absolutely raw in their experiences. The Zondas are design studies. The Porsche Turbos have legacy and feel.

The GTR has excellent performance, but little else, it's an over-engineered one trick pony that coddles the driver and isolates him from the road. It is designed so well and so over-thought from the performance to even interior polyphony programmed instrumentation that it's essentially a surgical tool, excellent in what it was designed to do, but absolutely, soul crushingly without personality. It's the Toyota Camry of sports cars.

For $75k I would much rather have a SLK-55, Boxster/Cayman S or Corvette Grandsport or a slightly used Maserati Granturismo.

Going fast for the sake of going fast is stupid, especially in the case of a car that will be driven on public roads. If you aren't buying a car for racing, numbers racing in cars like the GTR is nothing but masturbation.

The GTR is fast but absolutely soul-less. It'll still be remembered years from now by a small group of fanboys, but it is still overrated to hell and back. Its like the Supra, except the Supra was more fun to drive at legal to slightly extra-legal speeds.

The CTS-V starts at $61k. I'd take that any day over a GTR. Civilized enough to drive every day but a monster if you give it some gas. It's an amazing car for the price.

Eh, I don't know. I think the GT-R has a lot of character personally. It's certainly extremely striking in person. If it weren't so expensive to operate, I'd like to own one someday. I can definitely see the other side of it though. A friend has a modified spitfire running somewhere around 200hp, not the fastest thing in the world, but it sounds glorious and has power nothing. Lots of fun to ride in, but it's a little too small for me to actually drive.

Most cars these days have a dominantly large amount of computer wizardry operating to keep you from flinging yourself off of the road. Clarkson remarked positively about the ZR-1 recently when he said you can literally turn off all of that stuff, whilst on the new Ferraris and Lambos there's not a real option to run without at least some form of stability/traction control. So it's not just the GT-R that's gone techno-bonkers, pretty much everyone has. It's just that the GT-R's ability to manage it all so well turns it into a glorified video game (if reviews are to be believed, I haven't driven one personally).

Whether that's good or bad will differ depending on who you ask. But definitively the current GT-R isn't just a fanboy idol, it's a certifiable monster in lots of ways, and earns it's due as one of the most interesting cars to emerge in the 21st century.

Corvette Z07 - Its a ZR1 without the blower. Only $9,495 on top of the Z06 - includes the brakes & suspension of the ZR1. About $84K.

Next up: Cadillac CTS-V

Next Up: MBZ C63

Next Up: Cayman S PDK

I'm not a BMW Guy.

wrangler unlimited rubicon 4x4 will go many many places that gtr can't. and you have enough money left over for a loaded Z

That's the thing though, if I'm gonna take something seriously offroading, I'd rather have somewhat of a beater in looks that's mechanically sound. I don't wanna worry about dents and such 😀

if it's a used car, nothing beats an E60 M5 in that price range.

Why, you can even get an '06 S65 AMG or SL65 AMG for $75k; a car that was originally ~$200k! 😵

so real world answer, what do you mean by "better"?

My friend has a 2011 GT-R and he went to the track with me (thunderhill) back in Aug. There is no doubt the car is fast as hell but it isn't any fun to drive and he wants to sell it.
