Firstly, Thanks for the tour  NL5 seems like a 1st class dude, and I was very impressed with his setup. I looked things over, listened to some projects and had time to chat a bit about our little project and whatnot before I had to run.

JoLLyRoGer, hehe, glad to see ya back :)
Cool about the new setup you got. I'm using Sonar myself. NL5 has offered to do a mix for us for "Plat Man Do" in his studio, the seperate tracks for the drums will make a big difference if you plan on pounding one out for us. The plan is that I'll download all our WAV files when we get them done and then get them to NL5.

So, if you can get to the drum part, maybe compress that to mp3 for the rest of us to play-off of so we can get our parts recorded. (the mp3 file will be fine for that) The "Plat Man Do" track itself is a rough cut/paste job. I think you can get a feel for the timing between Platypus's original andd the longer version I cooked up. The rest of the parts will then use the timing on the new drums that you record so that everything ends up tight.

For the best tracks for mixing in the studio, all of our recordings need to be recorded in MONO and as clean as possible, and then those raw WAV files will be used (with no EQ). Keeping the drums seperated will make a big difference in the final mix.

So, are we all on the same page? Miss anything, Comments?

Oh, and thanks again NL5:D

Oh I agree totally! I will be like night and day being able to level and control each drum individually. I've had such a hard time in the past trying to record acoustic drums with just a mixing board and only a left and right sub-master to work with. I'm really excited to try this out. I'm still conquering a huge learning curve moving from Cubasis to Sonar.

Everything in mono? Why is that?

<--- plans to learn a lot more about the whole process of mastering from this thread. :D

Oh, and maybe we could do the 6/8 track next? I'm liking that one quite a bit myself?

He wasn't specific as to why, but my experience and from research into trying to learn to mix myself, mono tracks work better with plugins and effects in the DAW, so he would probably have to seperate the tracks anyway.

It doesn't really make sense to record in stereo when both tracks would be the same anyway (for a single instrument). I'm sure there's more to it, so chime on in :)

Did you still need the breakdown for the alt track, I'm sorry I haven't gotten it yet...I'm thinking you've got it figured since its pretty simple, but I can get one up if you need it.

No I'm fine. Now I just need to hammer out some details on the bass and record it/sync it so you can hear it.

I just swore the first time I listened to it that there was a solo section then I realized it was the same as the chorus or bridge or whatever.

Most times the source is mono. If it is a stereo effected guitar track, or stereo keyboard track, or even an X/Y ac guitar or drum overhead, just record it to two mono tracks. That way I have total control over the stereo spread, and it gives me much more flexibility to treat them differently if needed.

It was great meeting Rick (rbV5). Seems like a great guy. I'm still thinking about that sailboat. Awesome! :)

Ok, I redid the song... very pleased with the results if I don't say so myself :)

http://platypus.memoryfire.com/platmando.mp3

I took the ending in a new direction because the other one was kind of out of place.. there are two false endings here both with fadeouts.
I put some tremolo picking in one section and a cheesy solo in another part just for depth here, I have 4 guitar parts all double tracked left and right mono.
I also beefed up the sound of the guitars to make them sound more full of life, I suck at mastering so I'm hoping NL5 can make them sound better than I could :D
The drums and bass are in there just for substance, I don't plan on using them as I'd like to get more ATOTers in the mix. I left a lot of the verses open for little guitar wank solo opportunities though I'd ask if you don't mind leaving the two endings as they are or just adding something tasteful to them as I really like the way they came out.

Here are the raw AIF files
http://platypus.memoryfire.com/atot/CURRENT/platmando/

(gonna be about 2 hours before they're done, they're each about 35MB..I'll update the post when they're up)

Yea, me too, especially when I check the weather report for Puerto Vallarta, then look outside :(

Sounds good!! I'll start downloading parts.

Before we send it off for "final" mixing, we'll just make some rough mixes with the various parts we come up with first so that we get it the way we want it.

OK, here we go......

I would contribute, but I'm only just learning how to play piano.

I love the idea though.

Just got back home to my Mac and Garage Band. I'll be recording at least one bass track tomorrow, probably for rbV5's alt guitar track and not Plat Man Do though. I haven't come up with something good enough for that one yet.

wow nice job guys - keep up the work it sounds great!
the only thing I would add is as users keep adding tracks to a song, make sure it doesn't get too musically complex (too many instruments playing at once, doing their own thing)

that was sweet nice work.

I wish I played drums still and had all my recording gear. Would love to jam with you guys. I made some songs before online but most of them were with kids that didn't follow through enough or had any decent recording gear. It got frustrating. But we still had fun at least.

Okay stupid question of the day.

How do I export from GB so that I can mess with the settings and so that it's not in m4a?

Edit: Whatever, I just imported to iTunes then converted from there. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to upload so I'll wait on that one but I have the basic concept for the alt guitar track done. I'll start in on Plat Man Do after running some errands.
