I'm at work tonight. I have to pull 2 more nights, then I'm off for a week. Wednesday is the earliest I can get anything done realistically.

Can you make it out to Portland, OR?

no:( got a roland set and audacity though.

That will work!

what do you need a drum track for?

We are going to try and do Plat Man Do complete for starters. I did a pretty quick and dirty cut and paste to get it full length from Platypus's original sample, so the transitions are pretty rough., but I think you can get the idea that it is basically 3 parts.

I think we want to emphasise the breakdown Riff part with harmonized guitars into a cut-loose ending, going for that epic heavy rock feel.

After we get a tight drum track, we have pretty good idea going of what we want. Platypus can record new Guitar and Bass parts for the full length, and I'll do the same. At that point anyone else wanting to cover a part, or participate should be ready to jump in as there are plenty of changes throughout and it's a plenty long track....don't be shy;)

When the tracks are finished, everyone can send me links to the tracks where I will get them downloaded (preferably the original WAV's). I'll be contacting NL5 for details on how I can provide the best tracks for him to work with. He has generously offered to mix our tracks in his studio provided we get them started exactly at the same time (Which I can make happen with my PC based home studio)

I'll then either send him the tracks via CD, or hand deliver them myself for mixing. His studio is not far from my place, and I plan on contacting him this week for particulars on a visit :D

Maybe we can get the ball rolling here if we put out something half-assed decent, I know we have some talented musicians here, so we just need to get some buzz going.

Any thoughts? Lets hear some input :)

No worries on waiting a couple days. I'm still working on something, I just wanted the general chord progression and times of change but I think after listening a couple times I've got it semi-down. Got a little bit written tonight but it'll be a couple days before I'm happy with it.

For you guitarists out there, I'd be really down to work on something like Thrice's "Burn the Fleet." I just heard that song for the first time in a week or two and remembered that I had started to tab it out on bass.

Oh I don't want to do that specific song, just if anyone has anything written original like that I'd wanna work on it.

By the way, wisdom teeth suck.

I'm out of commission for a couple days and I RMAd my mobo today so I'm computerless for the time being other than the POS family computer while I'm still home visiting for another week or so.

Because compressed MIDI drum kits have no real life.

Please don't take the snap out of the drums! Pretty please! :)

I gotta remember what I played :p

That's why I record these little clips though, to remember riffs because I'm terrible at recalling them.

I gave Plat Man Do a listen and I dig it. One question though, during the last minute and a half or so is the guitar supposed to be that much off the beat or was that a dubbing thing?

Hey guys! Just checking in here - I kinda fell off the wagon durring the holiday season, someone bring me up to date. I understand we need some drums layed down for Plat Man Do? or something like that??

The 6/8 track is kicking supreme ass!

Also, I built myself a new DAW over the past few weeks. I've got a new Quad Core PC with Cakewalk Sonar 6 Producer Edition loaded up and landed an Alesis Firewire interface so now I can bring in my entire drumset on 8 separate channels at once! Much better than the stereo mix I was limited to before. This way I'll have so much more EQ-ing control over each individual drum as well as each ambient condenser mic separately. Thank God my old Tascam controller surface works for Sonar too. That will make all the post-production editing a cinch.

That old tired version of Cubasis VST 3.0 I had was not cutting it at all!!! This new software has so much more power and sophistication that it's rediculous so I'm definately up for some mastering work too if you need it.. I was limited to a total of 8 tracks before but with Sonar there is no limit on number of tracks (except the limit of hard drive space).
It truely is a bona-fide professional grade recording suite complete with more plugins and MIDI packs than I can count.

So let me know what's up! I'll be doing some recording with my band on Saturday so I might as well kill two birds while I'm at it!

JR..

Hey JR, good to see you back around here!

Yeah, the platmando track is what we're working on now, I posted a link to my original in the post right above yours so you can get a feel of the track. We plan on making it a lot longer so if you want to work on that, it would be cool. Feel free to add a drum solo section or space for others to solo in the track so we can get a lot of volunteers on this track!

Can I get a link to your master tracks all broken out either here or via PM? It would make it much easier to work with if I could just import the separate tracks into Sonar and go from there. .wav format preferably if you have them. If not, then .mp3 or pretty much any other accepted audio standard will work too (I have technology to deal with that ;) )

Sure I can do that, keep in mind that I am rerecording it so it might just be prudent to wait for a better/longer version of the track. You can get an idea of what you want to do with the teaser clip I posted there and when I redo the guitar/bass parts (this weekend most likely) I'll send you the master tracks.

Actually I don't use a metronome, I think that was my pick hitting my strings, strange sounds :p

I just got back from NL5's studio :)

Firstly, Thanks for the tour  NL5 seems like a 1st class dude, and I was very impressed with his setup. I looked things over, listened to some projects and had time to chat a bit about our little project and whatnot before I had to run.

JoLLyRoGer, hehe, glad to see ya back :)
Cool about the new setup you got. I'm using Sonar myself. NL5 has offered to do a mix for us for "Plat Man Do" in his studio, the seperate tracks for the drums will make a big difference if you plan on pounding one out for us. The plan is that I'll download all our WAV files when we get them done and then get them to NL5.

So, if you can get to the drum part, maybe compress that to mp3 for the rest of us to play-off of so we can get our parts recorded. (the mp3 file will be fine for that) The "Plat Man Do" track itself is a rough cut/paste job. I think you can get a feel for the timing between Platypus's original andd the longer version I cooked up. The rest of the parts will then use the timing on the new drums that you record so that everything ends up tight.

For the best tracks for mixing in the studio, all of our recordings need to be recorded in MONO and as clean as possible, and then those raw WAV files will be used (with no EQ). Keeping the drums seperated will make a big difference in the final mix.

So, are we all on the same page? Miss anything, Comments?

Oh, and thanks again NL5:D
