I loved RAGE. Excellent graphics and lots of things to kill. Who cares about a story. 8.5/10.
I agree. Although story isn't the best, and the overall experience often feels "shallow", the game is still very fun, graphics are great, and for $5 which I bought it for, it is definitely worth it. I spend at least a good 35 hours with it. I'd give it a solid 7/10. What RAGE needed to be a 9/10 game was more depth. I think it could have greatly benefited from RPG elements, such as character upgrades, inventory and overall character advancement through levels, abilities and whatnot. Further, all this would have to be integrated such that extra items and abilities would greatly affect the interaction with the world and fights with enemies. As it stands, the choices on how to deal with every fight are somewhat limited.
Some recent games I played.
Wargame: AirLand Battle - 6/10 Punishing difficulty, tutorial is very poor, in order to be any good at the game you must "study" it like a subject in school. Know all unit stats, strengths, know the terrain, and every little intricacy about the game, how everything works, etc. And you'll still lose to those who had more time to study than you did. Sounds obvious, but this is a GAME, and as such it should offer a level of enjoyment to people of all skill levels, which it doesn't. The pros off course, are the incredible depth, detail and strategy. No other strategy game offers this much sheer depth.
Disciples III - 4/10 One word. LAME. Lame story, horrible narrative, bad voice acting, bad unit feedback, lame sounds, punishing difficulty, very little innovation in comparison to previous games in the series, few music tracks and those that are there, are are really not all that great and repeat too often. A real shame, because the graphics are great and the game could have been awesome with proper audio backing but its amazing how audio alone plus lack of a good story and narrative can destroy the game so.
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - 8/10. A very nice, although limited with only one character Diablo clone. (which is still much better than Diablo 3)
Torchlight 2 - 8/10 A very nice game, but the whole, "lets not take the game seriously and make it look like a cartoon is getting annoying. Should have had a darker, more serious feel of Diablo. Also, in desperate need of proper PvP system." PvP is there, but really it should have been more like the PvP in Diablo 2.
Crysis and Crysis Warhead - 6/10 To sum it up, "ALL FLASH NO SUBSTANCE". Graphics are pretty good, even now, but story is lame, and gameplay is very, very derivative. If you played Call of Duty 2, you already done and seen all this to death. Crysis really feels like Call of Duty in another setting.
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - 8/10 Very, very nice RPG, plagued by constantly reused NPC models. This much recycling feels like an insult to the intelligence of the player. Combat system is very clunky. Distances to travel can get very annoying, and there is no fast travel system in place. Also, sex is done right, without being dirty or nasty. I picked this game up for $2.50 so it was worth every penny. I feel like I'll beat this one just for the story and character progression alone, because it is very rewarding.
Company of Heroes 2 : Beta - 9/10 Game didn't even come out yet but it is already great. Many people are complaining that the Russians are overpowered, but they weren't complaining enough in the original when the Panzer Elite was beyond overpowered and remained so for the duration of games existence. Feels good to have some revenge for a change, even though PE is not here. CoH is one of those few games that doesn't need to change much. It was perfect already. All it needed is a nerf to the Germans and the addition of Russians. Now it is perfect. As long as there will be more unit variety and more races than available in the beta, I'll happily play this game for many months to come.
