Wow, well, you already lost all your credibility but I gotta ask: Are you blind by any chance? The cars that they compare it to: American Ricemobile, American Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, and guess what? Another Japanese Ricemobile.
The author of the article obviously felt she had to choose a winner among ricemobiles, and chose Celica. Throwing in a few good words is always good, right? Also, I already said so in the first page but a magazine article =
The fact that you called them all ricemobiles doesn't speak well for you either, but whatever. What is YOUR definition of a soulful car? A Mercedes? A BMW?
Anything else is crap?

Kooky issues are part of what gives a car soul. When you take your European car into the shop, it takes some work to figure out what's wrong with it. Everyone is different. That's what gives them character, and soul. I guess it's hard to explain. I've driven Euro's pretty much my whole life, and Japanese cars just don't measure up.
How's this... since you brought up what lexus owners have to say... our 2000 RX300 with jut shy of 60k miles is absolutely flawless.. the paint hasn't been cared for, as in gas station carwashes in wintertime, and it shines like brand new.. the interior still smells of new leather, every single electronic device works as it's supposed to, and we haven't a single solitary thing to complain about.. in the past 6 months, we've replaced the battery, front brake pads, and tires, and as i mentioned in the above post, the light on the dash.. "d" for drive.. burned out
we're still being 'had' by their advertising gimmicks time and time again, with that unbelieveable customer service and free loaner cars worth nearly double what ours is... free unlimited carwashes as long as we keep the dealer's plate frame on, and here's one for ya... when we bought it, the SALESMAN pointed out a scratch on the fender that was thru the paint to the primer that none of us had picked out, and 3 days after we bought it, they took the car back.. gave us an ES330... for 4 days, no less, and with an Avis rental car from the mercedes dealership which is what our neighbors got, that would've sucked.. but with unlimited mileage on a different model lexus as long as we put gas in it when we brought it back we coudln't be happier to surrender our new purchase, and it came back minus the scratch, and to this day i can't tell what they painted and what they didn't. My sister's headed seat in her 2003 Jetta COUGHT FIRE, and they first unplugged it while she waited for the new seat to come in, then took the car for 2 days with no loaner, and no apology, to install a fahcking seat that could've maimed her..
that lame gimmick they've got going... that lame ass, piece of crap sales pitch they give you actually makes me LOOK FORWARD to something breaking on this truck.. but unfortunately for me.. nothing ever does

I also grew up in a European car family.

Yes, I'm really gay.
Oh, and I came up with another point as to why Japanese cars have no soul. Have you seen the cool movies at lexusfilms.com? Or acurafilms.com? How about infinitifilms.com? No? Hrmmm...

What does it matter if my car is in the same good condition but it isnt a Lexus, and is actually a VW?

Nissan actaully has such a film for their 350Z. It's called the "Run". Look it up.
Also Japanese cars are made to be fun to drive. How do you explain the Miata, the RX7/8, the 350Z, the 240SX, the Integra Type-R, the S2000, the STi, the Evo, the WRX, etc..

I don't think they'll sell. Lexi are like Seikos people buy them for the value. People aren't gonna pay Breitling prices for a Seiko. It takes charisma to sell at the $100K pricepoint, and Lexus couldn't find charisma if it hit it across the face.

I dunno. This is an understandable extension of lexus's business, but, quite frankly, the BMW and Mercedes name are worth so much at that price point. If you're going to drop 100,000 on a car, you buy it not only for features but also for the name. Driving around a Benz is just about as sweet as it gets. The Lexus name just doesn't turn heads the same way.
Plus, knowing Lexus, the exterior will look like a glorified Camry.

IMHO, the Lexus name gets far more recognition than it deserves as it is, so producing a $100,000 car to compete with MB, BMW, (and even Audi these days) is really pushing it.

Do you all think Lexus us stupid or something? It's not like they don't know what they will be competeing with in the ~100k segment.
I have no doubt they can pull it off.
Arguing either way right now is just stupid and pointless, because.. well, uh.. they haven't released the car yet!
How can you even argue about something that you don't know anything about? lol

I have seen many well off companies mis-judge their markets, good example is the VW phaeton or the W12 Passat, Lincoln Blackwood, Cadillac Catera...and the list goes on...
