What kind of small weenied, overpaid, @sshole drives a $100,000 car? Kinda reminds me of the 55 year old driving around in a Vette. i.e. It isn't happening...

Wow, well, you already lost all your credibility but I gotta ask: Are you blind by any chance? The cars that they compare it to: American Ricemobile, American Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, Japanese Ricemobile, and guess what? Another Japanese Ricemobile.

The author of the article obviously felt she had to choose a winner among ricemobiles, and chose Celica. Throwing in a few good words is always good, right? Also, I already said so in the first page but a magazine article =

The fact that you called them all ricemobiles doesn't speak well for you either, but whatever. What is YOUR definition of a soulful car? A Mercedes? A BMW?

Anything else is crap?

His definition is his Always break down A4

Kooky issues are part of what gives a car soul. When you take your European car into the shop, it takes some work to figure out what's wrong with it. Everyone is different. That's what gives them character, and soul. I guess it's hard to explain. I've driven Euro's pretty much my whole life, and Japanese cars just don't measure up.

Ok, we can settle this by realizing that our opinions differ because we grew up in different households.

As I grew up, I was taught that Fords suck, Chevies are good, Porsches are awesome, as are BMWs. My dad has never liked Japanese cars, I guess because he is from the generation that was affected by the war. He even lived in japan for a year as a child though..but anyway. In my family, we simply don't revere Japanese cars, but we do love Japanese electronics. If I was brought up differently, I would obviously have a different mindset.

Edit: POST 6666! CRAZY! :D

I also posted this over at VWV. One of the resident Audi nuts posted this:

"i'm sorry you are a victim of marketing. if you care about is reliability and customer service, get yourself a bus pass. ask a majority of german car buyers what they think about their car and they will quickly respond with something involving the words i love it ask the majority of lexus buyers the same question and they are quick to respond with its reliable"

A sensible response which I think sums up Lexus:

How's this... since you brought up what lexus owners have to say... our 2000 RX300 with jut shy of 60k miles is absolutely flawless.. the paint hasn't been cared for, as in gas station carwashes in wintertime, and it shines like brand new.. the interior still smells of new leather, every single electronic device works as it's supposed to, and we haven't a single solitary thing to complain about.. in the past 6 months, we've replaced the battery, front brake pads, and tires, and as i mentioned in the above post, the light on the dash.. "d" for drive.. burned out

we're still being 'had' by their advertising gimmicks time and time again, with that unbelieveable customer service and free loaner cars worth nearly double what ours is... free unlimited carwashes as long as we keep the dealer's plate frame on, and here's one for ya... when we bought it, the SALESMAN pointed out a scratch on the fender that was thru the paint to the primer that none of us had picked out, and 3 days after we bought it, they took the car back.. gave us an ES330... for 4 days, no less, and with an Avis rental car from the mercedes dealership which is what our neighbors got, that would've sucked.. but with unlimited mileage on a different model lexus as long as we put gas in it when we brought it back we coudln't be happier to surrender our new purchase, and it came back minus the scratch, and to this day i can't tell what they painted and what they didn't. My sister's headed seat in her 2003 Jetta COUGHT FIRE, and they first unplugged it while she waited for the new seat to come in, then took the car for 2 days with no loaner, and no apology, to install a fahcking seat that could've maimed her..

that lame gimmick they've got going... that lame ass, piece of crap sales pitch they give you actually makes me LOOK FORWARD to something breaking on this truck.. but unfortunately for me.. nothing ever does

Did you just choose to ignore what I posted?

And if a seat ever caught fire..would it not be in the fvcking news?

What does it matter if my car is in the same good condition but it isnt a Lexus, and is actually a VW?

The point has been made again and again. Aside from a handful of cars, Japanese cars are all point A to point B cars. They aren't made to be fun to drive, to give you an experience of ownership, to bond with your car.

I also grew up in a European car family.

Wow...reading through this thread I could hardly count how many times your mentioned how great your dad's s500 was on the first couple of pages of this thread.

I've also test driven the s500 and it didn't really impress me at all, espcially considering it's price point. But I guess you really seem to love and regard it as the greatest car ever because your dad owns one and you got to sit in it!!! WOW....I am impressed.

Yes, I'm really gay.

Oh, and I came up with another point as to why Japanese cars have no soul. Have you seen the cool movies at lexusfilms.com? Or acurafilms.com? How about infinitifilms.com? No? Hrmmm...

My sister's Jetta's engine caught fire (when left parked overnight) and burnt to a crisp. No reporter bothered calling her or the company/dealer either.

To answer your question, I think if your VW is in the same good condition as a Lexus after the same period of time and treatment, you can consider yourself lucky.

I owned a VW GTI for a while and though I loved driving it, it was a reliability nightmare. My BMW though much better still has had a ton of problems (and continues to). Despite that fact, I think when the new 3 comes out I will get it to replace my current one. Unless it is Bangled beyond belief.

Nissan actaully has such a film for their 350Z. It's called the "Run". Look it up.

Also Japanese cars are made to be fun to drive. How do you explain the Miata, the RX7/8, the 350Z, the 240SX, the Integra Type-R, the S2000, the STi, the Evo, the WRX, etc..

I dunno. This is an understandable extension of lexus's business, but, quite frankly, the BMW and Mercedes name are worth so much at that price point. If you're going to drop 100,000 on a car, you buy it not only for features but also for the name. Driving around a Benz is just about as sweet as it gets. The Lexus name just doesn't turn heads the same way.

Plus, knowing Lexus, the exterior will look like a glorified Camry.

Hehe NFS4...actually VW and Rolls-Royce are sister companies...In that case, the Phateon wouldn't have done well in either market...too expensive for the VW's, and too cheap for the Rolls-Royce...

Well put, every Lexus is a value proposition no matter what people are paying for some of them.

IMHO, the Lexus name gets far more recognition than it deserves as it is, so producing a $100,000 car to compete with MB, BMW, (and even Audi these days) is really pushing it.

While I feel there will be buyers for it, heck there were buyers for the Phaeton, I agree that in that price point there are many many other options with a more refined name...generally people who pay 100K on a car don't care about repair costs and or frequency as much as those who spend half that. It will be interesting though to see what they come up with and how well it sells.

Do you all think Lexus us stupid or something? It's not like they don't know what they will be competeing with in the ~100k segment.

I have no doubt they can pull it off.

Arguing either way right now is just stupid and pointless, because.. well, uh.. they haven't released the car yet!

How can you even argue about something that you don't know anything about? lol

I have seen many well off companies mis-judge their markets, good example is the VW phaeton or the W12 Passat, Lincoln Blackwood, Cadillac Catera...and the list goes on...

Yeah, but Lexus isn't that stupid. They haven't gotten in the position they have right now by making stupid decisions like that. In fact, just about every decision they've made has turned into gold.
